Who must improve for the Charlotte Hornets to be a playoff team in 2016-17?
The 2015-16 Charlotte Hornets were extremely competitive after the All-Star break last season, as they had a 21-8 record after the All-Star break. They went back and forth with the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Miami Heat for the 3rd,4th,5th and 6th seed throughout the second half of the season. In the end, the Hornets went back to the playoffs after a one year absence and ended up with the 6th seed, losing to the Miami Heat in an exciting first-round, seven game series. This offseason saw the Hornets re-sign Nicolas Batum and Marvin Williams, but they also lost some key pieces from the previous playoff season in guard Courtney Lee (Knicks), center and sixth man

While the Hornets were able to make the playoffs without him last year, they also had the firepower and leadership of Al Jefferson to come in off the bench, the ability of Jeremy Lin to run the offense with or without the absence of point guard Kemba Walker, as well as finish games down the stretch. Not to mention, the successful acquisition of Courtney Lee after the All-Star break. Those guys are gone and MKG will need to be productive. Within his first four years, MKG’s game totals have gone from 75 to 62 to 55 and then last year only 7. Before he was injured, MKG averaged around 13 points and 6 rebounds a game while shooting around 55% in those seven games. His scoring will need to increase because as long as he is healthy, he will see a lot of time with the second team. The length of him MKG and Nicolas Batum on the wing will be a troubling sight for opposing teams. And on the second team, he and Batum will have plenty of chances to score. MKG’s defense has always been a staple of his game since he entered the NBA. His combination of quickness and strength gives him the ability to defend smaller and bigger opponents. The Hornets defense, offense and rebounding rating improves tremendously when he is on the …show more content…
Kaminsky, however, was not consistent with scoring and rebounding last year and that will have to improve. He more than likely will move into the starting lineup at center. Kaminsky will also need to step up the rebounding numbers as he only averaged 4 rebounds a game. This offseason it was reported that Kaminsky added some more muscle which will hopefully help him in the post this year. “Frank the Tank” showed flashes of being able to the shoot the short/mid-range jump shot and hopefully he has developed somewhat of a game in the low post. With Tyler Zeller backing him up or even possibly playing alongside of him with the second unit, his rebounding and scoring in the post will be needed. Kaminsky will also be looking to improve on the 41% FG shooting, which for a seven footer is fairly poor. This probably comes from fewer attempts near the basket and more jump-shots for a big man. Maybe Kaminsky adds to his strong showing in the playoffs last year as a confidence builder towards the regular season. The addition of Roy Hibbert along with starting power forward Marvin Williams should help provide the veteran big man leadership he will need going forward this
With the rest of his team behind his back, the Thunder upped their record by 27 wins from the earlier year and still weren’t able to make the playoffs. With a scoring average of 30.1 points per game, he turned into the youngest NBA scoring champion and was chosen to his first All-NBA team.
While this is a team moving to a new city that recently hired a new head coach, there are several intriguing defensive pieces for Bradley to work with.
This season, LaVine has answered that question in a huge way as he is developing into a polished scoring threat for the Timberwolves, giving them another scoring option outside of Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony-Towns. This season, LaVine has upped his statistics across the board from last season. He is averaging 20.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 37.9 minutes per game. Along with his scoring going up, LaVine is shooting a career-best 47 percent from the field and shooting a respectable 38.6 percent from three-point range.
With second-year coach Frank Vogel at the helm, the Magic are expected to push the tempo and play a faster pace of basketball, something that fits Gordon skill set. Last season Gordon mostly played small forward while averaging 12.7 points. This year he’s expected to play more power forward, this will allow him to have a speed advantage over slower defenders.
The Kings finished the 2014/2015 regular season with a meager 29-53 record; no where near playoff contention in the fiercely competitive Western Conference. To put their under-achieving record in context, the Kings still would have finished as the lowly 13th seed in the far less competitive Eastern Conference. But they have visibly bolstered up their roster with a variety of talent.
None of that carried over to 2014-15, though, with the Raptors dropping all the way to 23rd (104.8). It became clear that a majority of players on the team were incapable of executing on the defensive end, which was surprising considering a large percentage of the roster returned from the year before.
His field goal percentage is steadily increasing over the past three years that he spent in the league, yet he is not shooting a lot from outside, only having attempted around 1 three pointer each game, and 87% of his field goals attempted are two-pointers, and among those field goals he attempted, 50.2% of them are 0-3 feet away from the basket. It can be seen from his highlights and stats, that he finishes most of his possessions inside the paint or from mid-range. But if he wants to avoid injuries, in order to spend a preferably longer time in the league, and to have a more all-around game, a consistent long-range shooting ability is what he needs the most. In addition to working on his shooting skills, it would also help him join the all-star club much faster if he could learn to create his own shots. Throughout the past three seasons, 50 % of the field goals and 76% of the three pointers that he attempted were assisted by other teammates, so that means he was always on the receiving end of a pass while cutting, running down the court or running to an open spot. What he needs is to able to create shots for himself during an iso play, like Joe Johnson or James Harden. This skill would prove useful in a lot of occasions during crunch times or when his teammates are kept off
The 76ers will already improve with a lottery pick(Jahlil Okafor) starting for them next year. Jahlil Okafor was the third pick in the 2015 NBA draft and many consider him to be a potential All-Star. Pairing him with Nerlens Noel, who had an impressive rookie season, would give the Sixers a formidable frontcourt. They have the potential to be the next dynamic front court duo, similar to Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
Walker's role on the team has changed dramatically since his freshman season four years ago, when he averaged 4 points per game in 18 minutes, to now averaging 7.7 points in 27 minutes per game.
When the team was established in the late 80s, the fans reached a new height in pride for their team. But when the team owner moved the Hornets to New Orleans and the Bobcats came into town, many can tell you all hell was broken loose. The Bobcats made it to the playoffs once, and they were swept out by Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Over their tenure, they only had one all-star who was slowly on the decline. Most Charlotte fans today don’t remember the days of Raymond Felton and Gerald Wallace, who were arguably the best players the Bobcats ever had. Charlotte hasn’t had a go-to star like Dwayne Wade in Miami, or LeBron James in Cleveland; both of which have been
The Philadelphia 76ers are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference once again. With a 18-31 record the Sixers are destined for the lottery again. However, there is a different feeling around Sixers nation. It’s a feeling that hasn't been felt since the days of Allen Iverson. It’s a feeling of hope, promise, and excitement. Let’s dig a little further.
His scouting agents are looking for bench players. Bench players that can rebound and be dominant inside the post as Tim Duncan. Someone else that get to the basket and get others in the game as Tony Parker. Players who can get blocks and guard superstars like Kewhi Leonard.
They blew the team up in the 2013 offseason and took the first step into a rebuild with a dismal follow-up that saw former fan favorites Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green get dealt for draft picks (and Jae Crowder). The following season, they overachieved and snuck into the playoffs, only to be blown out by Cleveland in 2014-15. After some more shuffling of the roster, they played a competitive series the following year as the fifth seed, where they lost 4-2 to Atlanta, but stole Horford from them in offseason. Now they have reached the conference finals and the only way to go for this team is up.
Last season, he averaged 10.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1. 6 assists per game. Coach Van Gundy has said that Morris has been impressive this off-season and really showed that he can beat defenders off the dribble. He will be inserted into the Pistons’ starting lineup in 2015-16, so there will be plenty of opportunities for him to get us all fantasy points.
Atop of all this, James is coming into this season with what looks like the best North Ohio-based roster he's been on throughout his career. Yeah, you can argue that Kyrie and Isaiah are neck and neck, but he brings a new dynamic to a team that clearly needed some form of change. Adding a former MVP in D. Rose to the bench will only add to the team's scoring prowess. Acquiring Zizic and Crowder, whose defensive impact will help the putrid defense instantly, will only make the team look better as LeBron makes his way to the top of the MVP
