According to Lunenburg and Ornstein (2012), “Major reasons why superintendents ultimately come under attack or resign can be classified into ten problem areas” (p. 254). After attending the Owensboro Public School Board Meeting it was clear which problem areas were prevalent in the district.
The relationship between the superintendent and the board members seemed professional and respectful. I did not witness any body language that would indicate a strained relationship. Also, the board members were respectful of each other and interruptions were minimal during the meeting. There are five members on the board but only four were present. All motions discussed were passed unanimously without disagreement.
Many items on the agenda were routine for the meeting, but I did not realize how much paperwork, reports, applications, and other forms were involved in a single meeting. This meeting addressed the instruction report, superintendent report, school nutrition report, fundraisers, field trips, and grant applications. The amount of work that goes into getting approval from the board is tedious for a district so large.

There will be two million dollars in cuts, of which one million will be in transportation. Owensboro Public Schools plan to do joint work with Daviess County Public Schools in order to discuss combining the state budget and adopting joint priorities. I was pleased to see that two separate districts would be willing to work together on a common goal. Along with the discussion of money, the need for more technology was discussed. Bob did a really good job in selecting the outside talent to represent on the advisory board. Bob knew that the family owned businesses had their own challenges so he chose Barry Ready, President of Readymade Office Systems, to join the Board because of the similarities between the two businesses. Bob also brought in functional experts Dick Crandall (finance) and Jim Carter (sales and marketing). Later, Bob added Peggy Thomas to bring diversity to the board and Mark Anderson, COO of Portland Timber, because of his real estate expertise.

She will be stepping up to replace Dr. David Romano, who will be retiring after 20 years serving the ABC school district. Along the same lines, it is important that when individual board members request information it is sent to every single member. Otherwise, the Superintendent gives up the opportunity to understand from where each board member is coming (Effective Superintendent-School Board Relations). This to some extent could be used as informational leverage, which could help down the line when trying to sway support. Keeping records on request is also considered very helpful when working with Boards. It is important that they stay informed, but it is also just as valuable that they get some feedback as to how much information they are requesting. They may tend to back off from requesting so much information. Regardless as to how and how often, the Superintendent must establish a communication system. Boards do not like surprises. It undermines board members ' trust, and makes them look bad, when they hear information about the district from another source (Effective Superintendent-School Board Relations). Getting the Boards trust can assist in creating a team concept.
Once the team’s vision had been established, we became very honest about our personal and professional strengths and our target areas of growth. From this conversation, the team was able to clearly define the focus and responsibilities of the PLC Leader and individual team members. The meeting was successful and everyone is excited about working together. Our vision will remain in the forefront of our meetings, reminding us to always provide a climate in our classrooms that fosters thoughtful and respectful consideration of all viewpoints.
The Hallsville Independent School District board meeting was very conductive. An agenda was handed out to everyone present, and it had every point to be made at the meeting neat and organized for everyone to follow. The meeting is mostly open to the public which provides a great way for everyone to feel up to date with what is going on in the school district, and be able to help in any way they can when problems arise. Once the superintendent had finished speaking about who was being recognized, the updated itinerary, and the HISD Education Foundation Report, he closed the meeting from the public. School board meetings benefit the community by letting the people not associated with a job through the school know what is going on in the district.
The Board President called the meeting to order, and the board secretary did the roll call. The agenda was comprised of various reports and the secretary would go though each agenda item, beginning with the board secretary’s report, finance, personnel, listing of approvals for salaries that included names of staff/faculty, retirements, leave of absences, bills, travel, field trips, etc.
I thought the meeting was professionally conducted. The meeting respected the schedules of the participants, followed the agenda, and ended the meeting on time. Everyone at the meeting spoke in a professional manner and using appropriate language, and all had the respect for each other. When one speaks, everyone listens attentively.
The Board of Directors consisted primarily of Gerry Wiegert, John Pope, and Barry Rosengrant. Gerry was the President, so it was typical for him to be a part of the board. John Pope was a financial consultant; therefore, he was adequate to be the financially literate person on the board. Barry was in real estate, but he was a consultant of Vector Car which gave him some knowledge of the company. The agenda was precise and followed routine procedures regarding presentation of information. As usual the local school board of Cullman City Schools was very clear and methodical in the presentation of the agenda and maintained a strong sense of professionalism throughout the meeting. The groups that asked questions and had concerns seemed to very pleased with the responses that they received from the school board. The information that was provided to the various groups and parents helped the various groups gain a better understanding of the school board’s position on specific topics all while providing a clear understanding of the overall outcome that the school is wishing to achieve. Every school district has board meetings throughout the school year. Unfortunately, many parents, community members, & school personnel do not attend such important meetings because they don’t realize or understand the importance of such board meetings or how informative they can be.
