Narrative Story One time I had to overcome adversity is when I had an AP bio test. This was the third or fourth big test we had taken in the class and the last test before the second quarter began. The week before the test I procrastinated studying until the very last night. The night before the test I knew I had to buckle down and study for at least a couple of hours. I heard my phone ring and looked at the number: the number on the screen wasn’t a number I had in my contacts. Typically I wouldn’t have answered this type of call but I did this time, just to waste more time that I should be studying. The phone call was from a coworker. I work at Stoneybrook Suites, an assisted living in town, as a resident aid. While the phone was …show more content…
No matter how much I tried to calm her down I couldn’t, she just continued gasping for air and sobbing uncontrollably. While still talking to her I quickly run downstairs and throw on a pair of khaki dress pants and a light blue v-neck. I could hear my heart beating from the panic of having to be at work in less than ten minutes. I say goodbye to the girl and tell her that everything is going to be okay and if she ever needs anything she knows how to get ahold of me. I live in a two-story spilt level house about seven blocks from Stoneybrook, so I made it there in under two minutes. I walk in the building and look around at all the smiling faces around me. One of my favorite residents sees me and says, “Alyssa, I didn’t know you were supposed to be working tonight!” In this moment I realized that this was where I needed to be. I worked the shift as normal and arrived at home, opened my textbook, and realized that if I failed the test the world wasn't going to fall apart. I studied for a couple of hours and then feel asleep, content with the amount of knowledge I had. I got to school the next morning and took the test. I had overcome my small adversity, I had taken my test and still had tie to help someone who needed help more than I needed to
It really comes down to what type of person you are. Some people don’t handle adversity very well they don’t have the grit or right character traits to help them overcome adversity. Others use their grit and character traits to grind through their struggles and trials in life. “Make dealing with your adversity a project. Set yourself a goal, or goals, and take decisive action on a regular basis. Don’t dwell on the past but focus on the future and allow that to pull you through”(Mindfood). Part of grit is to keep going when the problems being faced get worse. Setting goals will urge life to go on and ultimately help the adversity seem less than it actually is. Character traits that can help include flexibility, assertiveness, optimism, courage, and many more. For example, flexibility or being able to adapt helps overcome adversity for sure, because adversity can happen at anytime. Being flexible would help in scenario because you might have to go with whatever happens. Optimism is another salubrious option for overcoming adversity. Always having a positive outlook on what happens if essential. Viewing every problem as an opportunity to learn something new about yourself or in general. Nick Vujicic talked about optimism helping him overcome the struggles of having no limbs. He shed light on this by saying “I may have absolutely no control over what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. If we choose the
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” Joshua 1:9. Adversity is what comes to mind when reading this verse. The Book of Joshua teaches us to accept the good things God provides for us; things like adversity, suffering, and perseverance. I chose this verse because God chose for me to go through something so horrifying at the age of seventeen. It is natural to ask God “why me” in a time of hardship that never think about the purpose he has for us. How can adversity and suffering be a good thing? Because learning to overcome something is what builds your character. It turns you into the person God created you to be; and you find ways
Overcoming adversity takes a lot of skill and hard work. If you don’t try to finish, you can’t expect to win. Adversity is an obstacle in lots of lives, whether it’s at work or at school. Using determination, courage, patience, and attemptation helps you overcome adversity because adversity is just an obstacle, so it will die down, later on. Don’t give into adversity, for giving up means that there is no way to succeed and you will be stuck in a loop of adversity. Always be hopeful and strong, and adversity won’t be a problem to deal
Overcoming adversity is a process in which a person takes control of a difficult situation and learns from it. Adversity is a great teacher. But how one overcomes it is what counts. Though out the way people learn particular qualities about themselves and others. From this they have time to learn and grow from experiences faced.
I face little challenges every single day, but that's a part of life; that's just how things are. The most important things in my life are my grades, family, and friends, so naturally, my struggle involved one of these things. This year was particularly hard for me in school, I was a sophomore taking four AP classes. I thought it wouldn't be as bad as everyone said it was going to be - it turned out to be all right, except I had little free time. Because of this, I struggled in AP Language. I didn't give the subject enough attention and did not try hard enough. Three weeks before the end of the semester, I had an A-. On the very last day of the semester, my grade was a 95% A. In order to get it up to an A, I had to work with a great amount
Without overcoming adversity Jim Abbott would never be the first baseball player with only one hand.Malala Yousafzai would have never brought attention to girls education. Many of the runners from the Boston Marathon would have never ran the race again, and even never race again their life. Adversity, is hard to overcome, but ask is it worth it in the
One situation in which I overcame adversity is making b-team basketball for White Knoll High School. Basketball has always been a love of mine. I first fell in love with basketball when I went to an Atlanta Hawks game with my dad when I was 5. Afterwards, my dad purchased a basketball goal to go over the garage and we spent most our weekends playing in the driveway. The next year my dad signed me up for a recreational league in the area, and I played in the same league for 5 years. My dad was my very first coach. The pride he'd have on the sidelines when I made shots or played good defense forever cemented my love for the game of basketball.
Who we really are, what our real character is only truly elicited when we are challenged, as a proverb states, “In the darkest hour shines the brightest light.” Our true character shines through when we are pushed to our extremes and are placed in situations outside of the norm. Horace claims that when someone is faced with an adversity or a challenge, they are more likely to discover talents that they thought they never had. I agree with his claim that adversity breeds talents and strengthens our character, but still understand the importance of prosperity in developing talents.
Adversity hit me at an early age. At three years old, my mother became ill, she decided to peregrinate to those deep antique Turkish baths on the outskirt of the mansion to revive herself in sultry steamy natural water, so she can feel good and salubrious again. To my hurt, those places are not built for minor kids. At the request of my father, my mother took me with her. This huge architectural structure gave me the creeps. In addition to that I found myself left in the alcove of this mural square with deep natural rectangular shape space. In the center of this place, merges sultry a steamy source of natural dihydrogen monoxide that holds a myth for years as a miracle remedy for the body and heart. It was plenary of women relishing the relaxing
My parents came to the United States 19 years ago with two young kids in their arms. While neither possessed a high school diploma and both spoke non-fluent English, they had the determination to work more than 50 hours a week to make ends meet. In a way, I believe that I have inherited their determination in order to achieve my goals in the face of adversity. While I was growing up as an Asian-American student some of the struggles I faced were a language barrier and sometimes even discrimination. Later, in my academic career as a first-generation college student, I had fears of the unknown and the unfamiliar.
Overcoming adversity is hard, but these people survived the toughest obstacles that life could throw at you. Adversity is something everyone goes through, but these are extraordinary cases of what people went through. This crowd of people overcame adversity in three ways, only caring about what they thought, being creative, and facing their problems.
One example of adversity that has impacted my life is when my mom was diagnosed with Lupus in 2015. Lupus is an inflammatory disease that is caused when the immune system attacks itself. My mom also has rheumatoid arthritis and chronic migraines. There are a lot of times where she can’t get out of bed because she’s so sick. However, she always makes it to all of my activities. She truly is one of the strongest and most loving people I know.
In life, humans go through a cycle of transparency, a cycle in which we cannot escape. We are trapped as if we are flies caught in a spider’s web. Life is the cruelest game ever created. It is a game with the same ending every time. The ending of this game will always be death. The question remains of why we choose to accept this unbeatable game. However, just like every game, there is one abstract concept we learn that is worth every hardship we face. That concept is love. Love is the most powerful emotion humans can feel. Love is both a freedom and a restriction in our lives. People have several ideologies that help them overcome obstacles in their lives. Uniquely, writing is my love and scapegoat to overcome adversity in my life.
Before getting back up after you fall you have to gather all your strength and push whatever made you fall harder.Every time you fall the same solution might not work so you have to be stubborn and keep an attitude that tells your challenger Try your best shot, and that if you fall you won’t be gone for long.People overcome obstacles in less than three ways the three ways are by keeping a positive attitude, being determined, and lastly being a creative problem solver.
The character traits I possess that have helped me to overcome personal adversity are curiosity, focus, and composure. First of all, curiosity helps me to easily gain a lot of knowledge because I always have a desire to know more about every information. For example, why question is my frequency question in class. This help me to understand the lessons and memorize them longer. Especially, I always ask myself what I should do to be better; therefore, I can forget difficulties and continue to work harder. The second trait that help me to overcome my adversity is focusing on everything I do. I always know what I should do and how to make a plan for it. Planning and focusing help me to stay on the right track so that I can quickly achieve success. Last but not least, I believe that composure is one of the most important trait that can help me to solve my problems faster. In fact, whenever I have problem in life, I always try to calm down and spend time to think carefully instead of getting angry. Therefore, I can find out
