Oprah Winfrey was born January 19, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah was a smart child her grandmother taught how to read by the age of 3. Winfrey was molested by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend, starting when she was nine years old. At the age thirteen, after suffering years of abuse, Winfrey ran away from home. When she was fourteen, she became pregnant but her son was born prematurely and he died shortly after birth. She began going to Lincoln High School; but after early success in the Upward Bound program, was transferred to the affluent suburban Nicolet High School, where she says her poverty was constantly rubbed in her face as she rode the bus to school with fellow African-Americans, some of whom were servants of her classmates' …show more content…

During this time she formed her own television production company name Harpo Productions. Oprah received the National Organization for Women’s Women of Achievement Award. In February 9, 1987, Oprah acclaimed episode from her show was aired from Forsyth County, Georgia, where no African Americans were allowed to live since 1912. Oprah won her first Emmy for the best talk/service show and for the best show in 1987. Oprah got the cameo role in the Danny DeVito Movie Throw Momma from the Train. In 1988, Oprah was named Broadcaster of the Year by the International Television and Radio society. Harpo Productions which obtained ownership and production responsibilities for her show from the ABC-TV station, WLS in Chicago. She received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Individual Achievement Award. September 16, Oprah announced the start of her successful on-air book club. In 1997, Oprah did many things she had a formation of Oprah's Angel Network encouraging people to make charitable contributions and volunteer work.
