Oprah Gail Winfrey born January 29, 1954 is well-known for one the best talk shows called “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and is renowned for her supporting to charities and creating her own “Angels Network” aimed at inspiring people around the world to make differences in others lives for those who are less privileged. The reasons that I have selected Oprah Winfrey are because she is the best in her field, has over come personal obstacles, contributed greatly to society and has inspired others to achieve.

Also the books selected for her reading club increased substantially in sale (on average by 10 times) and found a place in the bestsellers lists. It is not easy for the new entrants to have so much influence on people’s thinking and behavior as Oprah does.

Oprah Gail Winfrey is one of the most successful colored women in the world. She is famously known for her television program, The Oprah Winfery Show, that focused on literature, self-improvement, and spirituality. Her show still remains the highest-rated talk show in American television history. She is thought to have popularized and revolutionized the tabloid talk show genre. Her immense accomplishments and humble beginning endears her to me and makes her an interesting person to read about. She embodies virtuous qualities such as: compassion, humility and service. Oprah once admitted during a interview with Jet Magazine to channeling the energy and spirits of her role models such as: Sojourner Truth, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and James Weldon Johnson, this helped her overcome her adversity of formative years and continue to use it as a guide in her success and fortunes as the wealthiest women in the world today.

Oprah had a firm belief in her own proficiencies, she had the idea that individuals are where they are and they get where they want to be due to what they believe in. Oprah Winfrey developed a unique survival instinct growing up as a child due to all the hardships she experienced, and due to this she was able to overcome diversity.

Once Oprah entered kindergarten she was advanced, and skipped to the thrips grade, the teachers found out that she had "reading and writing abilities of an eighth grader" (21). Eventually Oprah's grandparents became old and couldn't take care of her anymore, so at seven years old, her mother Vernita agreed to take Oprah in. By this time Vernita was working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she has given birth to another daughter. Oprah didn't want to move with her mom, and she eventually got into trouble. She began to steal money from Vernita's purse, it wasn't too long once she started realizing her money was coming up missing so she sent Oprah to her fathers in Nashville, Tennessee. Her father Vernon Winfrey believed in discipline, work, education. Oprah said that life with her father and stepmother "was like a military school." (24). While living with her father her speaking ability grew stronger and stronger. Once her mother got Oprah back because her father didn't have parental rights her life spiraled downhill. Vernita gave birth to another child. From there on Oprah was lonely, she never seen her mother. She eventually got used to being lonely, and started getting sexually abused by her mother brother. In today’s day and age one of the most influential women and people is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has had a big impact on today’s society and played a huge role in advancing it. By becoming one of the biggest names in talk show history Oprah has paved the way for others and became one of the more popular women in talk show history. Her willingness to help others and to be sure others are guided in positive light shows how much passion she has to see the greater good in others. Oprah has taken the time to see to it that young women are out of poverty and opening up a brand new school for underprivileged females to see to it that they have the same opportunity that children in America and other parts of the world have. Being that African- Americans, let alone women were not seen as marketable, Oprah helped to change this dynamic early in her career by using her platform in communication to open doors for other people. Winfrey’s work over a number of years is the single most evident reason why she has been able to be successful in the field of mass communication. Oprah is one of the most influential women of our time because of how well she is able to contribute to the human rights of women and advancing them in today’s society.

Hattie laid the foundation of Oprah’s career when she taught her to read the Bible. At the age of three, Oprah spent hours reading Bible stories to the animals on the farm. Hattie also taught her many lessons about God and faith. These lessons inspired her (at that tender age itself) to become strong and help people in need.
