When they reached the gate it was closed and Farah, her mother and so many other people didn’t want to be stuck out in the open desert, so they started to join the others in “pushing and shoving and jostling up against that gate”. (Ahmedi p 1) Once they realized that it would do no good Farah and her mother retreated to the back and spent the night in the desert. Farah realized the next morning that “Money changed hands, and the guards then let those people quietly through a small door to the side.”(Ahmedi p 5) Some of the guards were letting people through on bribes. However, they had little money, and the money that they did have they needed on the other side of the border. They were camped by a nice woman who had a husband checking out a goat path that could get people across the border. When Ghulam Ali came back he heard the story of Farah and her mother.”Ghulam Ali took pity on us. “Yes, of course you can come with us,” he said” (Ahmedi p 9) He had agreed to help them and lead them across the border. On the journey Farah’s mother asthma kicked in, ”we could have gotten over in little more than an hour if not for my mother. Because of her, we had to pause every few minutes, so our journey took many hours” (Ahmedi p 9) Ahmedi learned that in her her times of need someone comes helps and showed human
Farah Ahmedi’s goal was to cross the Afghanistan border to get to a better life in Pakistan. In the first read, The Other Side of the Sky, it says, “‘Night was falling, we were stranded out there in the open’”(Ahmedi 4). This states it was nighttime and she and her mother had no place to stay. Along the way, her and her mother faced many hardships, “The worst thing would have been if we had gotten separated. We were only risking injury”(Ahmedi 3). In addition, “Terribly warm and we had no water, but we walked. My mother began to wheeze. Her asthma was bad. Her anxiety made it worse. We could have gotten over in little more than an hour if not for my mother. Our journey took many hours”(Ahmedi 11). Overall, they succeeded their mission and made it over the border. For example, “This excerpt from “Escape from Afghanistan” describes their efforts to make
A necessity of Farah Ahmedi was to climb a mountain to flee into another country where she and her mother could be safe and lead a better life. This is displayed when, “Ahmedi and her mother decide to flee their home in Kabul in search of a better life (Introduction). This shows that they were trying to escape their home country as a result of the war there so they could get somewhere where they could be safe. Moreover, they actually made it over a mountain to enter into to Pakistan. Ahmedi questions, “How did I scale that mountain so easily? How did I climb down the other side (Ahmedi 12)? This is when she made it over the mountain. Most importantly, Farah Ahmedi learned an important lesson, “You never know when and where you may encounter a spot of human decency”(Introduction). When Ghulam Ali was so generous and kind to her and

However, once they got to the border gate, Farah realized, “The gate to Pakistan was closed, and I could see the Pakistan border guards were letting no one through” (Ahmedi para. 1). The novel that I chose was Spoiled by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. The main characters include Molly, Brooke, and Brick Berlin. This book is about a sixteen year old girl named Molly Dix, who, after the death of her mother, moves to Los Angeles, California to live with her biological father, Hollywood movie star, Brick Berlin and her half-sister Brooke. Molly isn’t used to living the life of a rich girl, so when she arrives, she is both excited and terrified; not only that, she’s meeting her dad for the very first time. Brooke welcomes Molly to high fashion and fame with an overwhelming dose of “sisterly love”. But in this town, no one is ever what they seem. I think that Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan built the story in a way that would

Growing up in a war torn country, Farah Ahmedi was used to seeing houses being bombed and her city being invaded. As she grew older, she had a freak accident in which she had lost her leg. Along with this, she had to escape her home in order to save her mom and have a better life. Just as it seems all their luck has run out, Ahmedi and her mother meet a kind man named Ghulam Ali who knows how to get them over the border. He tells them of a goat path that smugglers bribed the guards to keep unguarded and decides to take them along with his family on the steep mountains that make up the trail. According to Ahmedi, she “hardly felt the exertion” even with her prosthetic leg and that her “desperation” gave her “energy” which
Individuals should learn to accept themselves for who they are, not what society wants them to accept. As we continue to evolve, we build up our own characters, and they are typically a mix of the ethnicity and culture we inherit from our family, various encounters in our life, distinctive identity and personality we have. Our character and identity is not something that we get easily, it's an intricate process. The story “The Other Family” by Himani Bannerji is based on a mother and a daughter who immigrates to Canada. They belong to a black family, but after the immigration they are living in the dominance of the white society. The school is considered as the hegemony of Canada and teacher is considered as the mainstream, it is a sort of social institution that a hegemony shape but they does not know the awareness of marginalized groups. The mother feels anxious when she sees a drawing of a white family by her daughter. It was the misperceptions of the kid that lead to forget her identity or she was too small to identify it. So to examine about the identity of the marginalized individual the beginning is to focus on the quality of the education. It is necessary for every school system to teach equality and inclusions of every group status so that the marginalized group are not left isolated from the society. Secondly, the fear of the marginalized parents from losing their kids in the mainstream society shows their lack of confidence in their own cultural pride. Since

Khaled Hosseini’s sophomore novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, shares a setting with his previous novel, the turmoil of the recent decades of Afghanistan 's existence. However, despite similar themes, Hosseini once again manages to craft a story that is as engaging as it is poignant, as compassionate as it is critical, and as thoughtful as it is visceral.
According to the new data from UNICEF, fifty seven percent of marriages in Afghanistan involve girls that are under sixteen. In Afghanistan, located in the southern Helmand province, as many as 144 forced marriages were reported. In particular, farmers have been forced to abandon their daughters to the creditor as pay off for his debts. After the daughter is sold, she would be forced into marriage with anyone the creditor chose. This pertained to girls that were six years old or some even younger. These types of marriages were deemed valid in Afghan society and were quite frequent as well. In the novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, a man named Amir has an arduous time trying to deal with his past as he moves from Afghanistan to America. The text cites several examples of how some types of marriages were forbidden in Afghanistan. Common marriages are comprised of forced marriages, arranged marriages and love marriages in Afghan society.
His mother left him with Ali, who Hassan grew up believing was his father. Hassan had to grow up without a woman in his life to care for and love him, all he had was Ali and Amir and Baba. “It was in that small shack that Hassan's mother, Sanaubar, gave birth to him one cold winter day in 1964. While my mother hemorrhaged to death during childbirth, Hassan lost his less than a week after he was born. Lost her to a fate most Afghans considered far worse than death: She ran off with a clan of traveling singers and dancers.” (6) Hassan’s mother ran off to be in the circus, leaving Hassan to believe his mother never loved him. This robbed him of a proper childhood experience. Throughout the entirety of Hassan’s life he is robbed blindly by his real father Baba.”How could he have lied to me all those years? To Hassan? He had sat me on his lap when I was little, looked me straight in the eyes, and said, There is only one sin. And that is theft… When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. Hadn't he said those words to me? And now, fifteen years after I'd buried him, I was learning that Baba had been a thief. And a thief of the worst kind, because the things he'd stolen had been sacred: from me the right to know I had a brother, from Hassan his identity, and from Ali his honor.” (192) Hassan grew up in a shack with Ali while his brother and father were in a mansion because Baba had
People look through the eyes of the beholder when they regard others on this planet. It is no small thing to forget everything that you have learned when meeting neighbors. Humans form preconceived notions and in that, make choices and judgments on others. This is human nature, trying to figure out, understand, what others are like so we can figure out how to relate to them. David Lamb’s book The Arabs is a learned look at the Arab culture through his eyes. David was a correspondent and has been all over the world. As a reporter he has used his ability to merge with the cultures he reports on, to get an overall picture that he presents. The Arabs, by David Lamb seems to try and give an accurate presentation of the current world of the Arabs, but does reinforce some of the Western stereotypes in his book.
