Everyone has a different motive that drives them to undertake a personal mission or goal. Some people are driven by fame or power. Others may be driven by the idea of gaining a fortune. There are probably endless reasons to accomplish a mission or goal, but one of the strongest forces that can push someone to achieve their mission is to help save a loved one. For example, Farah Ahmedi was determined to survive unbearable circumstances to help herself and her mother, while Katniss Everdeen and Rikki-Tikki put their lives on the line in order to help save their loved ones. Their determination was so strong and in many cases, their missions led them into risky and dangerous situations. All three characters were willing to take chances, even risk death in order to accomplish their missions and goals. In the autobiography, “ The Other Side of the Sky” written by Farah Ahmedi, Farah Ahmedi's recounts her life story as a young Afghanistan refugee girl who faces dire obstacles while trying escape her war torn country. The excerpt given describes Ahmedi’s experience trying desperately to cross the border in order to flee Afghanistan. Ahmedi’s experiences many hardships during this challenging journey, but she was determined to cross the Pakistan border. She believed her mother and her own survival depended on them crossing over. According to the text, “Steep as it was, we could have gotten over in little then an hour if not for my mother. Because of her, we had to pause
Hannah Roberts conveys her idea of the inevitability of change and the changes individuals go through as they age. Her ideas on having to change and mature as people get older are powerfully expressed throughout “Sky High”. Roberts explores the idea that change is inevitable, and happens as time goes by. The imagery in “It’s an older, more age warped washing line I reach up to now” creates an image of her childhood washing line aged over the years. The washing line can also symbolise Roberts’ youth deteriorating as she transitions into adulthood.
Through this inconvenient situation, they find themselves stranded in the desert. According to Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 11 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The gate to Pakistan was closed… Where would we stay? There was nothing here, no town, no hotel, no buildings, just the desert.” Soon enough, Farah Ahmedi spots the solution to the situation which is to bribe the guards with money. Unfortunately, Farah and her mother didn’t have the money, but luckily they find another helping and compassionate family that offers help to them. This generous family tells them a secret about a goat path that leads to Pakistan which smugglers use too. Based on Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 12 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The woman told us that her husband, Ghulam Ali, had gone to look for another way across the border. He was checking out a goat path that supposedly went over the mountains several miles northeast of the border station.” The next day, they set out for the goat path. The climb was long and exhausting including with Farah Ahmedi’s mother, which had an asthma attack which took longer and her prosthetic leg, but they preserved. Farah Ahmedi’s determination and the will to survive brought/lead to her success. Farah Ahmedi finds out that even in a grave situation, there are still kind people like Ghulam Ali. Ghulam Ali gave Farah Ahmedi a chance of survival and gave
However, these characters and people do their best to survive and they dont take these risks just for the heck of it. Every decision they make has a purpose, whether its to find work and a new home or to free a whole nation
During their attempt, both Farah and her mom were suffering, but because Farah was more concerned about her mom, They were able to make it through quickly and got to the station. The author states in “The Other Side of the Sky”, “Perhaps my mother’s problems distracted me from my own. That might account for it.” (Admedi paragraph 12). In conclusion, Farah’s goal was to escape her own country and get to Pakistan, with another friendly family over the mountains, and learned that helping others can help you take your mind off of things, and there are good people in the world, but not all people are
Similar to Katniss Everdeen, Farah wanted to survive from her country that was in a war and move to America with her mother to live a better life. Farah had to take steps to reach where she wanted to achieve. Farah talked about, “It was hard for me to keep my footing, and my mother was clutching my arm now, just hanging on, just trying to stay close to me, because the worst thing would have been if we had gotten separated. Finally, I saw that it was no use. We were only risking injury,” (Ahmedi 12). Even though Farah and her mother weren't nearing the gate, Farah still cared for her mother and wanted her to
Refugees have to flee home with no where to go and not much to take. In the novel, Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Ali, ha and her family had to flee home because their was a war close by and if they didn't flee they were likely to be killed or captured. In the article, "Children of War" by Author Brice, he explains what a couple of refugee teens went through when they had to flee. People have to flee from there home a lot when their are wars in there area if they've don't flee there very likely to die or be captured. Refugees from all over the world have to flee and find home. Throughout the book “Flight” by Sherman Alexie the main character Zits is in search of where he belongs and why people have mistreated him throughout his life. In the midst of the action in the novel, Zits begins to experience character jumps, where he is trapped in the body of different characters. Each character jump that Zits has contributes to his growth into becoming more mature by allowing him to expand his perspectives and reflect on his own ideology. The most significant jumps are into the bodies of the little Indian boy, Jimmy the pilot, and his father. These jumps force Zits to develop his present ideas about revenge, violence, and forgiveness.
Speaking of one of my favorite artworks at the Mass MoCA, it's called Edge of the Cloud (2011), produced by Randy West. This artwork is comprised of thirty almost identical inkjet prints. More specifically, West scanned the same sheet of paper for thirty times; and the subtle nuances among those sheets are different shadows or marks, which were resulted by different scanning conditions each time. When those thirty sheets of prints are put together, viewers can see an overall image of the shape of a cloud from a distance. I really appreciate this piece, for it encompasses a sense of trick of art; further, the tension between a realistic representation of a concrete object and the mysterious abstraction really spices up the artwork as a whole.
I chose to compeer between the articles of Fareed Zakaria, from 2008 and 2011. I believe that Zakaria's article from 2011 continues the same thots or concerns he had in 2008, but in a more focus way.
When you were a child, do you remember ever making a promise to be loyal to a friend? Maybe you exchanged cute heart necklaces or pendants or carved your names into a tree. In Khaled Hosseini 's The Kite Runner, two kids, Amir, and Hassan seem to have a strong friendship, represented in their names carved into a pomegranate tree. However, Amir reveals weakness in their friendship when he betrays Hassan by not intervening when the town bully, Assef, sexually assaults Hassan. In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol S. Dweck describes two types of mindsets. One is the fixed mindset, which is the belief that a person has a fixed amount of intelligence, and one cannot see growth in error, and a growth mindset, which is the belief that
Jason undertook the mission to save Lyrian, Buck undertook the mission to survive, and Angus had the mission to find the girl with apple blossoms in her hair. However, all three were motivated because they wanted to live or wanted love.
Farah and her mother were trying to escape Afghanistan, as it was in war. According to Farah, once at the border, she saw horrible things as “people were pushing and shoving and jostling up against that gate, and the guards were driving them back”(Ahmedi 1). Days later, she met a woman. Her husband, Ghulam Ali, was seeing if a path would bring them to Pakistan. The women asserts, “If one could get to Pakistan safely by that route, he would come back for his family.
When one loves a person or thing dearly, then they have the tendency to do almost anything they can to protect and save them from whatever harm they come across. Katniss volunteered for the games knowing she was saving her sister from a terrible fate. She made a promise that she would try her best to win the Hunger Games, but her confidence in her own ability to kill another person was minimal. She did not want to get any blood on her hands but knew that in order to win she would be forced to. The author of Genocidal Killer, Crispin Sartwell recognized situations like these when he said, “your goodness, like mine, has little to do with who you are and everything to do with the social conditions you find yourself in” (Sartwell). The circumstance Katniss found herself in was full of violence, pain, and ruthlessness which further contributed to the tainting of her
Although half of the Gladers die, their sacrifice makes it possible for the rest of them to escape the maze. As compared to the film Maze Runner, majority of the sacrifice in The Hunger Games is derived from accepting death. During the competition, only one person out of twenty four can survive, which ends up to a cruel entertainment for the Capitol. The main characters in The Hunger Games and Maze Runner both showcase the theme of heroism by doing many heroic acts throughout the film. Katniss Everdeen is considered as a hero in the film as she encounters a dangerous journey. She is classified as a hero in a sense that she risked her own life for her family, friends and district. In contrast to Katniss’ act of heroism, Thomas was the most heroic character among the rest. Although he was a new member of the glade, he demonstrated his courage, his self-sacrifice for the good of others and leadership. As well as Thomas demonstrating courage, Katniss is also known as a courageous figure as she displays heroism by pouting her life in danger while she made sacrifices of the well-being of others. She portrays a true bro as she is prepared to give up everything for the safety of others, she is a great example f a hero because throughout the film she sacrifices herself by taking her sister’s place in the games to keep her sister safe.
