The meaning of slippery slope is when an officer is on a thin line of good and bad. Gratuities can come in any form so long as it’s free for the officer it can be where an officer is accepting gratuities such as a free dinner, soda, or even flowers as a gratitude of thanks from the citizens, which could later be used to make the officer look the other way. Some officers even take bribes to look the other way whether it be for businesses or just ordinary citizens. Many officers come subject to these free gifts as a thanks for a job well done. The problem with the free gifts is that many officers start accepting these free gifts not knowing that they are on the edge of being a bad officer. Would the officer getting the free steak dinner do the right thing and arrest the owner? Probably not, because he feels obligated to look the other way due to him taking the free dinner once a week. Sherman of the Crime Control Institute offered a hypothetical moral decline, beginning with the accept- ance of minor perks, such as the free cup of coffee, which leads to compla- cency about accepting a free drink after hours from a bartender, to bribes for traffic violations, then to money from gamblers and prostitutes, and finally to graft from narcotics” (Delattre, 2011).
