- Is there one theme that is more important than any other In of mice and men? Throughout the novel, Steinbeck uses the use of themes to emphasise what the characters are feeling and also to set the mood for the novel. The first theme we are introduced to is set right from the start and this is the theme of loneliness, this is shown when George says ‘guys like us, that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world.’ The fact that this is at the very start of the novel really does sets the tone for the reader and the rest of the book. Steinbeck uses the example of Lennie and George being paired together and looking after each other, to almost offset the whole idea of loneliness in the fact that they have each other.
