The opening scene in Of Mice and Men introduces the reader to the two main characters George and Lenny, and their unique relationship. The setting they walk into is serene and beautiful and in some ways reflects their shared dream to own a farm. They way they talk show that they are not well educated, but work hard, and care deeply for each other. The way they interact shows a deep bond and dependency on one another. In OMM, what does Steinbeck try to convey about life or human nature (theme)? In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck conveys the human nature to feel secure. Many of the characters feel isolated, or upset. After sharing their feelings they feel week and ashamed, and see the need to resume power through oppressing others. The major conflict in Of Mice and Men is ideal dreams that conflict with reality, but that the characters are unable to let go of. Also, Lenny’s helplessness and blindness to his own situations.
