John Steinback’s Of Mice and Men is a book that describes the chase of the American Dream. Although achieving the American Dream is a great desire for all, seldom does it actually come true. George and Lennie, the two main characters in the book, have a goal of pursuing their version of the American Dream, as do many other characters. However, due to relationships and other conflicts, that dream is not achieved.
The story Mice and Men is about two men named George and Lennie. They go through rough times together and always keep each other out of trouble, but make trouble together at the same time. They find work at a ranch where they meet new characters and situations.
Lennie is a large slow and a bit childish due to his mental disability. George is small, rough, bright but short tempered man that travels and cares for lennie. On page 14 George was talking to Lennie about how guys like them are lonely, they have no family or place to go. Unlike themselves they have a future and theycare for eachother. Then lennie says happily “But not us! Ah’ why? Because.. Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you and that's why” this shows that George and lennie have each other's back and they're basically each other's family and if they ever got lost or separated, they had a specific spot to go find each other so they wouldn't have to worry where they would be.
Lennie, being the man that he is, attracts Curley to a fight. Lennie keeps saying no, but Curley won't listen, and he just keeps punching and punching. Finally, Lennie decides to do something and breaks his hand. Talking to George now, he is disappointed in himself. Since George was watching this whole thing, he knows that Lennie didn’t do anything wrong, but that doesn't occur to Lennie. He still wants confirmation from George that he is still in the clear. From the question that Lennie asks about the rabbits, it can be inferred that he is a nice guy. Everything he does is so that he can one day tend the rabbits. He is truly trying to pursue his goal of that small house with many rabbits. Since Curley attacked him, there was nothing that
Lennie is so innocent that he doesn’t know right from wrong. On that note, Lennie was the cause of the two friends getting fired from their previous job. Lennie loves to pet animals and anything that looks soft but when he saw a little girl in a dress and he wanted to pet the dress. The general population knows that is not normal and that if a big man, like Lennie himself, were to go up to a young girl and start feeling her dress, he could get sent to prison for the rest of his life. George tried to explain to Lennie
The story of Of Mice and Men follows two migrant workers during The Great Depression, George and Lennie. The book follows the pair over only three short days, from George and Lennie taking the job on the ranch Friday morning, to Lennie murdering the boss’s son’s wife on Sunday (McCarthy). This speed, compounded with the fact that no mundane activities, such as working, eating, or bathing are described, amplifies the suspense the
Lennie never does anything without the consent from George. He knows he has to listen to George, If he doesn't he knows he will end up in trouble like he did while picking weeds. In all the trouble that Lennie gets in, he doesn't do it on purpose. Lennie has a good heart and never means to hurt anyone. His mental disability causes all his action.
George had Lennie’s best interest at heart when he pulled the trigger. Although, death was inevitable for Lennie, the best option was for George to kill him. Rather than, Curley and his crew or prison to brutally end his life. Lennie’s last moments alive, he was in a comfortable and safe place. The place where George told him to return to if he were to get in trouble, a place where they first dreamt of breaking off and having somewhere to call home. When George found Lennie on the hillside, Lennie expected George “ to give him hell”. Lennie asked him “You ain’t gonna leave me, are ya, George? I know you ain’t.” George responded “No.”(103). George continued to comfort Lennie by saying “ An’ you get to tend the rabbits’ Lennie giggled with happiness.
American journalist David Grann once said, “You want the story to be about something, have some deeper meaning, but there is also an emotional, almost instinctual element, which is, does this story seize some part of you and compel you to get to the bottom of it?” Every piece of text has a meaning that goes deeper than the page it is printed on. Of Mice and Men is an example of this. Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The story takes place in California during the Great Depression, a time where it was laborious to be anything close to successful. Everyone believed that with a minimal amount of hard work and money saved up, the American Dream could be at their fingertips. The two main characters George and Lennie struggle to get land to call their own. Lennie is driven by his dream of tending rabbits, but he makes it challenging when he is the main reason of their setbacks and complications as they move from job to job. Fortunately, George is always there to clean up the mess. Of Mice and Men is studied as an allegory because the characters symbolize problems more substantial than the ones Steinbeck clearly writes about. John Steinbeck zooms in on other problems that America struggles with besides the enticing desire for just materialistic things. Steinbeck criticizes racism, the mistreatment of those who are disabled, and the disrespect of women.
Then ten years later in the book, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck covers the American dream during the height of the Great Depression. This book is about two men, George and Lennie, who are trying to achieve their dream by working at a ranch. The books depict how the American dream

Lennie looks up to George and does anything he asks. George protects Lennie and helps him with his disability. If Lennie did not have George, Lennie could be in prison.
