Odyssey What Makes A Hero

He is the hero of the story, but What do you think makes a hero, his loyalty or his bravery? A Hero is someone who is loyal, such as loyal to his country, his family and loyal to his god or gods.

What is heroism? What is a hero? Does a hero have to have rippling muscles and superpowers? Is a nurse as much of a hero as a firefighter? Merriam-Webster defines a hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”.

Alex Lickerman,a psychologist, gives a very detailed description of how he portrays a hero. Many people are considered heroes for minor things. A hero is not about giving money to charities or visiting people in need. Although these deeds are productive, it does not make people a hero for doing these actions. A genuine hero will risk their life or try to save a life.Heros, are not looking to be rewarded for their actions. People simply do these deeds,because they want to make a difference in helping others. They should support people in time of need. The person I chose that qualifies as a hero is Richard Nares. He has started a program to help children receive chemo, who are unable to transport themselves. Nares travels around the country for children, he hopes to give hope and he has a major support system supporting him.

What makes a hero? A hero isn’t someone who has superpowers but, a person who has heroic personality. Odysseus from The Odyssey shows some of the heroic personalities in the adventure he took. One of the personalities he shows his bravery. He shows this in two examples, when he wanted to go into the cyclops (Polyphemus’s) den.

What does it mean to be a hero? People have been asking this question for a while now and people ended up with different opinions. Take Odysseus for example. He was a king and leader to his men. Though he doesn’t wear a cape or have super powers, his followers still see him as a hero. Why? I personally think that being a hero means inspiring people and pushing people to be their best selves and this is what Odysseus had achieved during his troublesome journey.

The traits of an epic hero are, one, a noble birth, two, capable of deeds of great strength or courage, three, a great warrior, four, travels over a vast setting, five, national heroism, six, humility, seven, faces supernatural foes and/or recieves supernatural help. Odi from the Odyssey potrays all of the traits of an epic hero. He shows these traits through his actions throughout the story.

~ In the article “What is a Hero”  paragraph 4-5 the author states that a what makes a hero is “A heroic act is one performed with recognition of possible risk and cost, be they  to one's physical health or personal reputation, in which the actor is willing to accept anticipated sacrifice. The key to heroism is a concern for other people I need your concern to the find a moral cost knowing there is a personal risk done without expectation of reward.” Basically a hero is someone who helps others not because he is asked or he will receive  a reward but someone who does it to be kind.

To begin with, after reading many selections of the Iliad and Odyssey from the text, The Essential Homer, and comparing many characters, Odysseus is a character that can be described as being a ‘Homeric Hero’. The term Homeric Hero can be described as being a cruel and brave individual, belonging to a hereditary class, must embody arête, and must be young, beautiful and emotional.

“I want to be Batman.” That is a typical response from a preschooler if they are asked what they want to be when they grow up. However, heroes are not always wearing capes. They can simply be an Indian man that changed his mindset into something more inspirational. There is one thing that Superman and a policeman have in common. They are both heroes. No matter how different the fields are, they are brave, helpful, and hardworking. A hero can be someone known for courageous achievements. They are normally men, but can be women too. Heroes come in many different ways. Some characteristics of a hero are someone who has enormous courage, strength, and knowledge. They usually have a big effect on people’s life and are pretty well known. A hero is also known for helping people and not doing it out of revenge. They must have a good heart because they are putting themselves at risk for others. The people need to have trust in him because he is putting their life on the line, so they cannot be evil. A true hero isn’t perfect. They have disagreements and bad days, but the motivation to get back up and help day after day is definitely a true hero. Being a hero is tiring, because being a hero is not a one-time thing, so one cannot just do something good for a day and call themself heroes. Being a hero means loving what you do. Heroism in modern society is defined as someone who displays bravery, strength, and victory, but I think that a hero should possess stronger qualities than that. I think a hero should be able to willingly sacrifice something for someone they don’t even know or sacrifice their life to help someone in need, something some ordinary person wouldn't do. Odysseus is a hero because he defends his home, tries his hardest to keep his crew alive, and does everything he needs to do to keep himself alive.

“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer,” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). A hero is just like an ordinary person, but they make a choice to rescue someone, and put their life on the line. For instance, a hero is valiant when they need to be, sacrifices themself for another, and they don't put another in harm’s way.

Whether it’s getting over a fear, face to face with death, or scoring the game winning goal, there are many ways to be viewed as a hero. One person who I believe fits this description down to the letter, is my brother, James, and this is why he is my hero. Heroes are not always people who lead marches or do things for their country. For example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the time to save lives. When they’re going through a challenge or trying to overcome a conflict they always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else’s. To be more specific Dr. Ginger Holt from Dallas had saved a little boy’s leg. She was confident and determined to finding out what went wrong in the boy’s leg and went through many procedures looking at the tests.

The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and valued.

When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.
