Heroic Personalities In The Odyssey

In my eyes a hero is a person who shows courage, is humble, does not give up, and is someone everybody can relate to. The protagonist in “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because although he is emotional throughout the book and lets his emotions take over his actions, he displays immense courage and perseveres through his journey and hardships.

Heroes, as shown in literature, often undertake the most difficult tasks and place themselves in mortal danger in order to bring back, for themselves and their societies, both knowledge and treasure. Their stories follow “Hero Journey.” The Odyssey, as the epic story of the hero Odysseus, follows closely the complete cycle of a Hero Journey, both as a physical and as a psychological undertaking. Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.

What makes someone a hero? Is it the adventures they go on, the traits they possess, or how popular they are? In The Odyssey, Odysseus embarks on one huge adventure to save his people, but barely gets back home. The struggles on this journey have proved whether Odysseus is in fact a hero, or just a fool who got lucky. Although literary scholars of The Odyssey have argued that he is not a hero, closer examination shows that he is a hero because he met the ultimate goal of defeating Troy, bravely led and sacrificed for his men, and escaped multiple enemies.

The trait of heroism is something that has changed over thousands of years. Today’s heros have different traits than those heroes of the Trojan War. However, a few have survived the test of time. Many of modern day heroes, as well as past heroes, do hold these long enduring traits, like Nelson Mandela, Marcus Luttrell, Louis Zamperini, and the fictional Iron Man. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey by Homer, portrays the traits necessary to be dubbed a hero. One is a hero if he or she shows leadership, bravery, resilience, and creativity throughout their actions.

Being a legitimate hero is not all about having the extraordinary supernatural powers commonly seen on television. Heroes are people who aid others, often putting themselves at risk to do so. They made the decision to fight, not necessarily physically, for their values. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, should be considered a hero. He put his own life in jeopardy to protect his men from the supernatural threats that they faced throughout their journey. Odysseus should be regarded as a hero because he is brave, clever, and cautious.

There are many different ways that a hero can be described or imagined. Everyone has their own ideas of what makes someone a hero. Also, for many heroes it is debatable whether they really are a hero. In The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, Odysseus is one such debatable hero. Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, level-headed, and he shows faithfulness and respect to important figures in his life.

A Hero is someone who is looked up to by people, does things people remember them by and does things for other people. By today’s standards, odysseus is a hero. The reason why odysseus is a hero is because he is looked up to by many people, and he has done many things people remember him by. Throughout Odysseus’s journey him and his men encountered many things for people to remember them by and look up to them.

In movies, heroes are depicted as someone with superhuman strength or the ability to fly, but is this what a hero truly is? Odysseus fought through many hard battles against unimaginable monsters, and without him many would have died. Odysseus is a hero because he was both clever and brave.

The term, or title, of “hero” encompasses many different individual things. What does one mean when they call someone else a hero? Anyone who is asked the question “What is a hero?” will answer with a word that usually only describes a single aspect of being a hero. Compassion, bravery, loyalty, selflessness, etc. will all be used to describe a hero. The definition of “hero”, the things being a hero encompasses, has evolved over time, and as a result, the definition of a hero now is different than it was back in ancient times.

What is a hero? Are they strong, are they compassionate? Hero’s have been around for centuries, and if you want to be considered a hero, you some really superb people to look up to. So what do all these people have in common; Strength, intelligence, but most of all selflessness. However, many people still argue that Odysseus is a hero.

What is a hero? Is a hero a powerful being capable of doing amazing things? Or, is a hero just someone to look up to? If anyone can be a hero, then would they even want to be one in the first place? Being in the spotlight is hard as any mistake you make will ruin or hurt your “hero” status. If the hero has always been powerful and well known, like Odysseus, they would already know how to act like a hero. They would know not to make any mistakes. Odysseus is a hero and has been considered one for thousands of years, but does he really deserve that title? In many ways, he is flawed. Odysseus, just like all of us, he is not the perfect hero or person at all due to his untrustworthiness, his ego, and his human nature.

Heroism a Concept What is a Hero? According to Umberto Eco (an Italian novelist) “The real hero is always a hero by mistake; He dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else.” I think this is a magnificent quote. In some ways I agree with Umberto Eco but in other I don’t.
