They say leaders can be heroes, but heroes can’t be leaders. While both roles overlap, leaders and heroes have distinct responsibilities and characteristics. Heroes solve current problems and emergencies, and leaders create permanent change. As Odysseus, the epic hero in The Odyssey by Homer, makes his journey home from the Trojan War, he shows skill when protecting his men from mythical creatures and challenges. When Odysseus’ crew faces challenges, Odysseus creates strategic plans and maintains his crew’s morale. In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer portrays Odysseus as a hero and a leader. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus performs many heroic acts. For example, Odysseus and his crew blind Polyphemus, who captured them in his cave. This is important because it allows Odysseus’ crew to leave the cave. If he hadn’t blinded the Cyclops, he and his crew would not have been able to leave the cave. “I carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them in my hands until they softened” (Book 12, lines 111-113). As Odysseus’ crew headed toward Scylla’s path, Odysseus stuffed his men’s ears with beeswax to save them from the song that lures sailors to death. “I am Laertes’ son, Odysseus” (Book 9, line 7). This shows that Odysseus is a noble-born. Since he is the King of Ithaca, he is responsible for guiding the people of Ithaca.
