In the peril of history, amidst the chaos of war and the face of adversity, one question remains prevalent: What defines a good leader? Is it made up of their ability to maintain unwavering bravery during times of trouble, or perhaps their ability to unite others to conquer challenges? This is the story of the epic odyssey of Odysseus, the legendary hero of the Trojan War and lofty King of Ithaca. Taking place after the Trojan War, Odysseus and his men experience several tests and meet peaceful allies and lethal enemies in their desperate pursuit to return home. Despite the discouragement of Odysseus’ men, he can inspire his men by recalling their past successes under his command. By describing the strength of the Cyclops, he is painting the picture that this is just another mere obstacle during the stretch home. Odysseus saved his men risking his life, making the right decision for the best outcome for his men. Though his men weren’t loyal to him he persevered to get them home. This is why Odysseus was a great leader who was concerned only for the welfare of his men.

Over the course of Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," Odysseus has shown himself to be a capable leader on numerous occasions and a less than ideal one on others. Many now question if Odysseus is indeed a capable leader in light of this. Odysseus is portrayed as a complex character who displays bravery and wisdom. His astute tactics, fearlessness in the face of difficulty, and inventiveness in conquering obstacles frequently portray him as a perceptive leader.
In the story “The Odyssey”, by Homer, Odysseus improves his leadership abilities from not caring about his men and being selfish to thinking for his men’s lives before his own. First, during Odysseus’ visit to the Cyclops' Cave, Odysseus wants to stay to fill his desire to “see the caveman” but because of this, many of Odysseus’ men end up being killed by the Cyclops (Homer 958). Therefore, Odysseus is selfish and thinks of his personal desire to see the cyclops over his men’s lives. A good leader would have thought about his men first and left the Cyclops’ Cave as soon as possible. Odysseus’ poor leadership is on the reasons that his journey is difficult.

On this journey, Odysseus shows terrible leadership as he shows arrogance and egotistical behavior throughout the book. A good leader will be confident as to be aspiring, but a weak leader is arrogant. He also shows disrespect, untruthfulness, and deceptiveness to his crew as they journey across the vast ocean. In Homer’s “The Odyssey,” there is a clear display of Odysseus’ leadership skills. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, spent many years stuck out at sea along with his crew members. During that time, Odysseus was the leader of the ship, and he made many decisions that put his position as leader in doubt. He would make important decisions when he was not in the right state of mind, refuse to listen to the advice of others, and put too much faith in his men. Furthermore, when he did these things, it would cause harm not only to their journey back home, but to their lives as well.
People look up to Odysseus and willingly like him as their leader shown by this quote “Men hold me formidable for guile in peace and war:this fame has gone abroad to the sky’s rim. In our world today, Homer & W.H.D. Rouse, author of “The Odyssey” describes Odysseus as someone who would most likely not be seen as a hero because he’s too focused on himself. He's not a liked person, but he is brave and is willing to do pretty much anything he wants. Odysseus shows us that being a good leader goes beyond being liked, it's about facing challenges, thinking smart, and redefining heroism in our world today. For instance, being a good leader isn’t just about making everyone like you. While being liked can help, it’s not the only thing that matters.
