The purpose of my observation this week was to observe communication. The first example of communication I observed was between a teacher and a teacher. They were discussing tests and to keep things private and confidential they talked quietly. The second example of communication I observed was between teacher and student. They were discussing test scores and that child’s progress. This communication is also done privately, because it was not information to be shared with the whole class. The third and final example of communication I observed was between teacher and parent. A student had been sick, and rather than the nurse calling the parent, the teacher did it. When a teacher calls instead of someone like a secretary, or nurse it is more
On September 12, 2008, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee’s, a local restaurant, beginning at 7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading, the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other group’s conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead.
This assignment will start by discussing two well-known theories known as ‘the cycle of communication’ by Michael Argyle and ‘the stages of communication’ by Bruce Tuckman. Firstly, it will look at Michael Argyle’s ‘The cycle of communication’.
One of the most important things that a teacher must have in the classroom is great communication skills. Not only in the classroom, but with the rest of the school, parents, and the community. The text defines communication as the act by one or more persons, of sending and receiving messages that are distorted by noise, have some effect, and provide some opportunity for feedback (DeVito, 2005 pg. 108). Teachers not only have to ensure effective communication within the class, but they also have to turn the classroom into a motivating place where students want to learn. I believe that teachers should love what they do and should be positive every time they enter the class. I also believe that in order to have a successful classroom, students must be rewarded for their accomplishments. Teachers should put some type of reward system in place. As I continue this writing I will discuss different types of communication, listening as it pertains to the classroom, motivation, reinforcement and rewards.
Communication is a transactional process that involves more than one person. When an interaction between two
Portray the social condition and the path in which members communicated inside the setting. This may incorporate examples of associations, recurrence of cooperations, bearing of correspondence designs [including non-verbal communication], and examples of particular behavioral occasions, for example, clashes, basic leadership, or joint effort.
Children and teachers alike use different methods of communication within a classroom. “Language is used by teachers to manage their classrooms, determine rules and routines and ensure children are aware of their expectations” (I CAN, 2008). Children use communication to practice what they have been taught, to express emotions, and ask questions. These are just some reasons for communicating in a classroom. There are different methods employed to achieve communication in a classroom and each are used
Furthermore how would we be able to transfer all of our knowledge to the next person, better yet, how would we improve our capacity of knowledge as a whole. We
I have always thought that good communication is a vital part of succeeding. With all the technology the world has to offer today there are more than enough ways to create exceptional communication between people. In order to understand someone there needs to be good communication. To have a relationship, business or personal, there must be good communication. For someone to put their trust in another person, there should be good communication. Before technology, the only real way to have a conversation with anyone was face-to-face. Now, I’m not saying communicating with someone in person is unnecessary, because it very much is, however, this day and age we are lucky enough that we don’t have to wait for a convenient time to talk to someone. Let’s face it, as a teacher there is no convenient time. According to Holcomb, Castek, and Johnson, it is important to keep classroom teachings current with the present day (2007). This is where technology and its importance comes into play for teacher and student/parent communication.
This piece of writing will try to evaluate if this kind of communication the best for people and look at how it has changed the way we communication .
Education and the ability to communicate effectively go hand in hand. Without proper knowledge of communication, the ability to teach would not be possible. "Communication is the key to learning because a great deal of what we learn depends on our interactions with others" (Downing & Hanreddy 2015). The forms of communication in a classroom can set the tone for the entire school year. During my interview with Mrs. Lynne McNutt, a teacher employed at Lorraine Elementary School, she stated that if you do not know the signs of proper communication you cannot teach to the individual. The only way to teach to the individual is to be able to recognize common forms of communication. Communication lays the framework for life in either succeeding or failing.
Non-verbal communication are those type of communication in which the communication setting is generated by source i.e. speaker and is received by the receiver i.e. listener. The communication between these two people is done by the means of his or her environment conditions with which they can receive or translate the message contained in it. Basically it is the way of communicating with each other, sending and receiving the message in a variety of ways without the use of verbal codes i.e. words. This way of interaction includes various forms like gestures, eye contact, posture, facial expressions, dress, touch, word syntax, material objects, and time system. All these type have some or the other message to convey. Non verbal communication is important aspect in one’s life as every interaction done with the people includes non verbal communication as a secondary means of talking. This type of communication helps us to knowledge, attributes and skills. Secondly, Intercultural communication is a form of communication which mainly aims towards sharing the information across different culture and ethnic groups. These information and interaction is used between an organization comprising of various people from different religious, social, ethnic and educational background. It also reveals the information about the people interact with each other though they are from different backgrounds. It also helps to understand how the people understand and decodes each other message in an
Individual discussion: This communication method allows the participants to discuss some private and sensitive information face to face without creating any offending feeling. However both parties need to be aware of the communication styles and learn to compromise their opinions.
For this experiment it was hypothesised that non-verbal communication will establish a more favourable first impression than verbal communication. The FIS was used to rate the favourability of an impression, with a higher score indicating a more favourable impression. The hypothesis was supported by the results of the experiment as non-verbal communication had an FIS score of 902.16mm out 1300mm while verbal communication had a score of 823.10mm out of 1300mm. The non-verbal impression score was 76.9 points higher than verbal, which is significantly more and shows that non-verbal was more likely to induce a favourable impression. These results support, Dion, Berscheid and Walster’s “What is beautiful is good” theory, that in social interactions, physical appearance has a stronger influence on first impressions than other factors. (Whetham, Day, 2003) Although there has been no relationship found between attractiveness and personality, like the “What is beautiful is good” hypothesis suggests, it is commonly assumed that attractiveness will equate to friendliness and likability (Eagly et al.,1991) This theory can be supported indirectly through this experiment as the results showed that non-verbal communication, such as physical appearance and facial emotions, were found to create a more favourable impression than verbal communication, suggesting that the appearance of the individual affected their likability.
There are two types of communication that teachers use to penetrate into the minds of the learners-
During student teaching, I had to demonstrate thoughtfulness in communication and an awareness and appreciation of varying voices in several different ways. First I had to get and open line of communication with my mentor teacher by email and in person. In emails I had to let her know when and what activities I needed to complete in her classroom. Then in person, I had to be open and aware of feedback and comments my mentor teacher was giving me. I have communication with parents at drop off and pick up. Also I have to have an open line of communication with other teachers and staff at the schools.
