Nursing Personal Statement Essay

My ambition is to graduate St. Francis College as a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree in the upcoming years. Although majoring in nursing will not be easy, I feel I am prepared for the challenge. At this time in my life I cannot see myself majoring in anything else. As a young girl, with a mother working in the medical field, I was always fascinated going to work with her. Working in a doctor’s office these past two and a half years myself has given me much experience with patients and has made it more to clear to me that this is what I want to pursue as a career. I wish to be a nurse because I seem to get a feeling of warmth and internal satisfaction when helping those in need. I have begun to learn that medicine is not the only cure for people’s ailments. It is the care they receive by those around them whether it is in a hospital, nursing home, or even their own home. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people 's lives by helping them recover.

I have always wanted a career in which I can touch lives, that is when I discovered my love for nursing. In nursing, I could probably even help to save lives. I enjoy helping people in their times of need. I think it is the most fulfilling thing in the world, and nursing will allow me to do this for the rest of my life. I believe that the cure for many of the people's illnesses is not just in medicine, it is in the care and love that they receive as patients from nurses and the medical team. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people's lives.

The tasks of a nurse fascinates me; I have had several opportunities to observe nurses in hospitals and I find their work intriguing. I have always been interested in the health field and performing the jobs of a medical professional. Ever since the age of twelve, I have known I wanted to attend a university and pursue a career in the health field. I have always had an interest in my science courses, specifically biology and chemistry and have excelled in these areas. I want to be able to receive the best education possible and make my parents and community proud. I wish to do more for my community than just being a typical nurse and I will be able to do more by becoming a nurse practitioner.

For me nursing was not something that I initially intended to do as a career. During elementary school and into high school I contemplated many different career paths such as cosmetology, teaching, psychology, and forensics. It was not till the later years of high school that I started to notice my desire to help other individuals and love of science, health, and different disease processes. I've always wanted to work in the nursing field since I was just a little girl. I grew up around nurses, EMT’s, and Pharmacy Technicians. It finally occurred to me that I wanted to be an Registered Nurse when I sat and watched my great grandma pass away. She was on bed rest and a bunch of nurses, and hospice came every day to help her. I watched and observed them, and imagined myself as a registered nurse.

I have had the distinct privilege and honor of practicing the art of nursing since 2000. Throughout this time, I have seen the profession evolve through technology, practice and theory. With the recent and constant change created by the healthcare reform, today’s nurse must realize that learning is a lifelong process that does not end upon graduation. The nurse is never done learning, especially as technology and medical knowledge are constantly evolving. My most recent endeavor has been the pursuit of my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at Western Carolina University. This education has broadened my mind to the opportunities nursing has to offer and has enriched my personal and professional goals.

When people ask me the question, “Jas, why do you want to be a nurse?” The first answer that comes to mind would be the generic answer, “Because I want to help people.” However, during the process of being in Lower Division and competing with almost 400 other students with the hopes of being accepted into Upper Division my mindset has changed. After studying my hardest through each class I am in and overcoming the challenges that come with each one, I am more determined than ever to be a nurse, more specifically a Traveling Registered Nurse, and I will not let anything stop me from reaching that goal. Ever since I was younger my parents have taught me to share, be caring, and always have a giving heart. As I went through high school I knew I wanted to be in the medical profession but I could not decide where. After attending a Career Center for two years and attaining my certification to be a Nursing Assistant, I knew nursing was the career I wanted to pursue. Nursing was the best fit for my personal values, financial commitment of the present and the future, and the ability to travel.

Growing up my mother worked as a nurse which consequently built a strong respect as well as admiration for the profession. However, up until the day I left for college I never considered this career for me. As a last resort I made checklist to try and determine the major that best fit my aspirations for the future. Nursing immediately jumped out at me and since then I have been infatuated with the goal of becoming a nurse.

From a very early age I have had a passion and drive to help people. I was first inspired to go in to a nursing career by my grandmother who would tell me stories about her experiences as a midwife. One that stood out to me was when she travelled through a snowstorm to deliver a baby, and it is this level of commitment, care and compassion that I aspire to have. I have also found inspiration from my mum who is an ICU nurse and has always shared her experience and advice with me. This has been something that has resonated with me throughout my life and has always served as an inspiration.

My calling to nursing started when my father got diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2015. I watched him suffering through radiation and chemotherapy, but what got him through those hard times was the help of some great loving and caring nurses. As I became more involved in taking care of him, my passion for nursing had greatly increased. Now, for nine years, I have maintained a commitment to caring for others in the field of Nursing. Being a registered nurse (RN), I have taken care of one patient at a time, which I have been involved in the amelioration of lives, and have only been left wanting to give and do more. Pursuing a master of science in nursing (MSN) is more than just a logical or natural progression for my career. It is a life choice, one that is backed by highly refined clinical judgments and in-depth exposure to an array of set-ups, and levels of care. In this personal statement, I will deeper highlight an explanation of my career goals, the reasons for my choice of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization, and lastly the reason for pursuing an advanced degree in nursing.

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center has provided me with the opportunity to interact with patients of all ages and all levels of health statuses. Having decided that I wanted to pursue a master’s degree and become a Family Nurse Practitioner, I set forth and enrolled in a graduate level statistics course during my final semester of my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at OSF Saint Francis College of Nursing. This course has prepared me for future graduate classes as it required a higher level of thinking and processing compared to that of a bachelor’s level class. I will be completing my BSN degree in December of 2016, thus far, I have a 3.90 GPA and will be awarded Academic Honors- Summa Cum Laude upon graduation. Being a nurse was my childhood dream. It started when my aunt, who was a Military Nurse shared her work experiences with me. Listening to her experiences stimulated my interest in nursing and it developed my core beliefs of community, family, loyalty, and compassion to serve the people who need medical help. It also taught me that all things worthwhile required hard work. Another factor that influenced my interest in nursing was going with my mother who was a Medical Technologist and worked at a local community hospital. At a very young age, I was exposed to how healthcare services were rendered by nurses. I was fascinated to see how they provided care to patients without hesitations, nurtured their profession and achieved self-fulfillment with what they do every day. For as long as I can remember, I've always aspired to become a nurse, a healthcare professional who is always helping patients receive the highest quality care and compassion. As a young child I was often in and out of the hospital, I'd received treatment after treatment and I found myself fatigued by the end of it all. However, receiving high quality care and genuine concern from the nurses made the experience much less excruciating. After I'd learned about that profession as a child I felt that I wanted to do the same for others as those nurses had done for me. The difference I want to make as a nurse and doing what I enjoy is what drives my interest in nursing jobs. I want to do pediatric nursing because I enjoy kids. I recognize the impact that a healthy individual can have on a child through a simple encounter. I find that us as adults can bring tremendous positivity and guidance to a child’s life whether we are a teacher at their school, nurse, or police officer, because they look up to those willing to genuinely help and love on them. As a nurse I can comfort or be silly with them in their time of hurting or when they are scared and encourage them. Children hold a special place in my heart because they are also our next generation. More emphasis needs to be on their health mentally and physically because they are the future.

I chose this major because I like to help people. I chose nursing because I want to save lives. I’m interested in nursing also because of my mom. My mom has a lot of health conditions include diabetes, fibromyalgia, asthma, and gastritis. I help my mom on daily basis with her conditions. I love helping my mom. To me, being a nurse is far more than a job or even a career. It's an adventure, a continuous learning process that I embark on bravely each day, in search of life changing events and miracles. I consider myself to be a compassionate person who genuinely enjoys helping people, to positively impact people's lives by making a significant difference while achieving a lifelong dream, because of its endless variety and finally, I believe this is the best career path for me.
