A dedicated team of doctors and nurses are the reason why I am, today, still able to embrace the presence of my grandmother following coronary bypass surgery some years ago. Studying medicine, to be at the forefront of patient care, will allow me to sculpt such triumphs for families and individuals, but more importantly, will enable me to preserve our best interest; good health.
Five weeks of yet ongoing voluntary work at a local nursing home has prepared me for the stark realities and uncertainties surrounding medicine. This has primarily been achieved through contact with senile and alcohol-related dementia sufferers, with many unable to tend to their own basic and personal needs. Admittedly, it has not always been glamorous, taking on tasks of responsibility such as toileting, but nevertheless has been a personally maturing experience and has undoubtedly heightened my social awareness. This was made apparent by sitting in on district nurse consults, occasional journeys to the pharmacy to collect drugs for residents and observing weekly GP and psychiatrist consultations. These experiences induced a realisation of how the cooperation, accomplished by effective communication between different healthcare professionals within the NHS, plus the combination of primary and secondary care in the UK contribute to the effective functioning of the NHS. Reading an article where the failure to communicate with patients’ families and other doctors when a DNR order had been placed in particular showed the dire consequences a lack of communication can have.
