Throughout my education, I have acquired a fascination with the astonishing complexities of the human body, especially the intricate systems which rely on each other to perform multiple functions. In the hospital, I was inspired by observing how medical and psychological care, along with scientific research, could enormously impact a patient’s life. Therefore, I would like to pursue my interest in science into an incredible career where the direct application of scientific knowledge and research can benefit society, through Medicine.

This fascination has led me to research topics which exceed the AS curriculum. Studying meiosis in Biology, stemmed my curiosity in Obstetrics. Therefore, I read a riveting article regarding the development of artificial wombs for premature babies. This is remarkable progress in medicine, but it has raised several ethical issues. Through GCSE Religious Education and reading “Medical Ethics, A Very Short Introduction”, I have expanded my knowledge of the ethical challenges faced in medicine. During a hip replacement operation, orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists and surgical assistants worked together, within their specialities, constantly communicating with each other to perform a successful surgery. The process displayed the importance of good teamwork and communication within the group, to ensure that the patient’s wellbeing and comfort was maintained, by keeping strict time boundaries and making spontaneous logical decisions.
