I am a third year student currently undertaking a degree in Adult Nursing at the University of Plymouth and I am due to finish my course in July 2018. As a final year student, I believe myself to be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, committed, responsible, compassionate, caring and work within the NMC code of professional conduct; and local trust policies and guidelines. Reflecting upon my experiences from these past years from the course and placements, I can identify that I have increased my knowledge on clinical skills, health promotion and research from evidence-based practice.

From these placements, I have developed a wide range of clinical and interpersonal skills; as well as learnt to adapt to new work environments and work as a team. Also, this has led me to act on my own initiative and feel more confident as a nurse. The nursing process has been a core component of my training, therefore I feel competent in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care. When undertaking these processes, I have always involved the patient and their family/carers, where appropriate, as it aids to accuracy and effective nursing care; as well as develops a therapeutic relationship. When delivering care, I have always practiced in a manner that maintains patient’s confidentiality, privacy, dignity and respected patient’s rights in their decision making of their treatment and care. Furthermore, respecting patient’s values, beliefs and preference to achieve a person-centred care. Having a strict confidentiality is vital in this field, as it involves a sensitive subject of women’s health issues. I have always worked within the limits of my knowledge and competence as a team. I worked independently and gained confidence undertaking nursing assessment. I understand that my education and clinical knowledge is something that I will continuously develop to ensure that I am a safe nurse. Whilst on placement, I rely on evidence based practice and policies and procedures to ensure that I am practicing in a safe manner.
Seeing information about a healthcare user in such terms makes me realise that some information is not necessarily in the public domain and therefore I have a privilege and responsibility to not only care for the patient but also for the knowledge about them that I am privy to. I realise that, although I have a duty to retain confidentiality, I may be placed in a position where the confidence has to also include other healthcare professionals and I need to involve the patient in such a situation (ibid).
