Non-Profit Management and Leadership – BUS 535 Professor Melissa Patterson Ann Elliott The importance of non-profits in the current economy and society Non-profit organizations have been in existence in the United States since the 1950’s but grew and expand in the public sector in the 1970’s. Prior to nonprofits there were charitable and philanthropic organizations and associations going as far back as the 1800’s. These organizations were instrumental in addressing social ills and that of the poor and destitute. For example, many organization that reached out to families in need and orphans are still in existence today under the auspices as a nonprofit legal entity. A nonprofit organization is defined as an organization that is formed for the purpose of serving the public or mutual benefit other than the accumulation of profits for owners or investors and that doesn’t distribute its profits but rather retain its revenues and surplus to achieve its goals. It has a reinvestment policy whereby it continues to meet the needs of if its consumers. An organization is deemed nonprofit when it becomes eligible for nonprofit status under the IRS code section 501(c) which means that they are of a tax-exempt status …show more content…

They are all around us in our communities and they are making a difference as they touch millions of lives daily. Most everyone we meet has been in some way was advantage by nonprofit goods and services. The article by the council of nonprofits states it clearly that nonprofits protect, feed, heal, shelter, educate, and nurture our bodies and spirits. Nonprofits also give shape to our boldest dreams, highest ideals, and noblest causes. They turn our beliefs into action - as promoters of democracy, champions of the common good, incubators of innovation, laboratories of leadership, protectors of taxpayers, responders in times of trouble, stimulators of the economy, and weavers of community
