I interviewed three nonprofits located in the San Francisco Tenderloin Neighborhood. These non-profits varied in staff size, budget, and services they provide, but serve similar communities. The communities these organizations serve connect them as a network. However, they are fairly interdependent of each other, therefore the organizations are only loosely coupled (Perrow, 1972, p.196). Based on my interviews, the organizations shared similarities in influences that affected adaptations to their environments. However, their coping strategies varied in their adaptation. Variables that influenced the life cycles and the success of these particular non-profits were securing organizational funding, investing in staff leadership, and responding to political environments.
George is addressing the important issue of the perception of poverty in the United States at this time. She brings up many valid points about the perceptions of poverty in the United States and how nonprofit organizations perpetuate this narrow view of what poverty is in order to elicit contributions (676). Moreover, George is able to show how Habitat for Humanity while helping many people in need. Also gives the false idea that people living in poverty merely need some volunteers to build them a home and then they will be able to work their way right out of poverty (678). Given these points, Prof. George explains, the idea that people in the United States living poverty all live in squalor or are homeless does nothing but limit people’s knowledge of what true people in need actually look like (682). With an economy driven by our relationship with capitalism and bottom lines, it seems inevitable that nonprofits also tap into these business dealings if they are to survive. The third chapter of Leslie R. Crutchfield’s and Heather McLeod Grant’s book, Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits, titled “Make Markets Work,” delves into the strategies used by nonprofits who harnessed business tactics in an effort to increase their social impact. Collaboration among organization members and community stakeholders is very important, we must begin to study and understand nonprofits not merely as organizations housed within four walls but as catalysts that work within, and change, entire systems. The most effective of these groups employ a strategy of leverage, using government, business, the public, and other nonprofits as forces for good, helping them deliver even greater social change than they could possibly achieve alone (Crutchfield, 2012). The Alliance for Better Nonprofits (ABN), located in the Regas building in Downtown Knoxville, exists to provide resources, training, consulting, networking, and standards of excellence for nonprofit organizations in the 25 counties of Upper East Tennessee (What We Do, 2017).
