The facility would contain an office area for the Sustainability Supervisor, a paid employee of Mercer University who would be responsible for the recycling and sustainability efforts at Mercer University. They would oversee interns responsible for maintaining and updating the website as well as student workers who would sort recyclable materials. It would be outfitted with three computers, office furniture, and a solar compactor. Collected recyclables would be taken to that facility to be sorted, compacted and housed. With the creation of a sustainability office, we would be able to increase the amount of recyclable waste that could be stored on campus and simply take the material to Atlanta, directly, after it was capable of filling the truck. This would decrease the amount of trips taken downtown to the Macon recycling center and increase Mercer’s independence in the sustainability movement.

Environmental issues have been a part of living on earth since the beginning of time. The only issue with this however, is that resolutions have only just recently been put in place. Environmental concerns have only been discussed since the last half of the twentieth century. While some small steps were taken here and there, The European Union was the first to deliberate environmental policy in an attentive and compulsory nature. The European Union has some of the highest environmental standards to date. These standards have been evolving since the Paris Summit meeting of the European Community that took place in October 1972. The Paris Summit of 1972 was the first to introduce environmental policy on such a vast scale. One outcome of the summit was a declaration on environmental and consumer policy which gave the Environmental Commission the authority to establish the First Environmental Action Programme (EAP) to implement environmental policy. An EAP is essentially a strategic policy document which reflects the fundamental elements of contemporary environmental thinking and problem perceptions, as well as strategic policy orientation. America disposes millions of dollars in unsold and out of date food yearly. In fact, four billion tons of food is produced annually, and on average $165 billion of that is wasted (Frasz). Between grocery stores, restaurants, and personal households this total can add up rapidly. Society frequently complains about the unemployed, sick, and poor not having ends meet. However, Americans often contradict themselves by allowing this process of waste to continue daily. These wasted products could be beneficial in numerous ways. For example, donating to charity, food banks, or farmers for animal feed and compost are just a few ideas we could consider other than just throwing our leftovers out. Other countries, such as France are finally starting to counteract against this worldwide situation and the United States should follow in line. America should be implementing techniques to solve this excessive waste problem before the issue becomes out hand.

The need for recycling should not be asked, it should just be done out of habit. Overall curbside recycling if a fairly simple and affordable form of recycling. One of the drawbacks of it however stems in the lack of knowledge and agreement that people have for curbside recycling. This is mostly because curbside recycling is mainly utilized in large cities, private communities, and within states in which it is mandated to be used. This is an issue because many states do not mandate curbside recycling and people are left uninformed of this effective form of recycling. A major contributor to air pollution is the burning of waste that is sent to landfills. In fact, if recycling levels increase to 75% in the United States, it will have the same effect on carbon dioxide levels as if 55 million cars were removed from U.S. roads every year (Recycle). Recycling helps to reduce waste sent to incinerators, and thus reduces air pollution. Even through the processing of recycled items, pollution is lessened. For instance, studies show that "recycled paper produces approximately 70% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials" ("Forty"). Air pollution both harms the earth and the people on it by contributing to global warming as well as respiratory diseases. That’s why every time people reduce waste, reuse, and recycle their garbage, they save the earth and even millions of lives from the harmful effects of pollution. Overall, requiring recycling will allow pollution rates to plummet and the environmental state of the earth to improve.
