Sleeping in on Sunday mornings was normal for Marines and Sailors not on duty. Orval got up early asking his parents about his driver’s license through the mail. After Coyotito is cured, Juana and Kino end up fighting off thieves, robbers, and themselves when the greed and lust for the pearl become unbearable.
Throughout John Steinbeck's The Pearl, the stereotypes of Kino and his people are highlighted severely. One of these stereotypes are the role of men and women during that time period. Kino and Juana lived in a patriarchal society where men controlled the community, government, and the church. Kino and Juana were no exception to this standard. Kino and Juana’s relationship finally becomes equal after the difficulties they face ensuing the pearl.
Kino, Juana, and their baby Coyotito live in poverty. One day Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, but the doctor won’t treat him because they have no money. Kino finds a large pearl while diving and is excited because the pearl will bring him wealth and medical care for his baby. When the town finds out about the pearl, they plot against him. No one will pay a fair price for the pearl, the doctor poisons the baby, and a burglar breaks into their home. Juana wants to get rid of the pearl, but Kino refuses. Juana takes the pearl, but Kino beats her to get it back. Kilo is attacked by a group of men. During the fight, Kino drops the pearl and a gun goes off. Kino kills one of the men. Juana finds the pearl and gives it back to Kino. They
Kino handed Juana the pearl and laid his hand gently on Coyotito’s head. This is for our son. He thought calmly and then lets go of his son. He then gently places his forehead against Juana and stayed still for a bit. They stayed like that, until finally Kino
At the beginning of the story they both felt content and happy as show in this quote “Sometimes it rose to an aching chord that caught the throat, saying this is safety, this is warmth, this is the Whole.”. They did not even speak because their understanding was so great. But after Kino found the pearl his relationship steadily deteriorates as shown in this quote “"Kino," she said huskily, "I am afraid. A man can be killed. Let us throw the pearl back into the sea." "Hush," he said fiercely. "I am a man. Hush.”. That shows that as time goes by Kino is acting ruder and harshly to Juana all because of the greed the pearl caused. Another example is "This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us." And in the firelight her lips and her eyes were alive with her fear. But Kino's face was set, and his mind and his will were set” this quote shows that Juana is becoming increasingly fearful yet Kino is sure this is the way and is willing to do whatever is necessary to become wealthy. This causes a strain between their relation. Finally the worst thing Kino commits is the act of attacked Juana. He is described as a snake hissing at her and hitting her that makes her fall. He even continues to kick her after she has fallen and she accepts it and knows he may even murder her. This shows that Kino has broken all limits of humanity and is being consumed by
In the novel Kino talk to buyers who want to buy the pearl from him and when a few buyer approached him, the first buyer made no offer because he said the earl is a monstrosity. The second buyer said that the pearl would die within a few months. The third but last buyer offered Kino five hundred pesos. Juana knew that the pearl was evil because when Kino and Juana were sleeping at night they heard some noise going on outside there house and when Kino went out there with a knife and Juana came out there with a stone, she saw Kino lying on the ground all bloody and beaten down. At that time when Kino was beaten down, Juana asked Kino to destroy the pearl, but Kino still feels that the pearl would bring good for Coyotito, so Kino decided to go
When Juana tries to tell him that the pearl is evil, he doesn’t believe her. He says, “No one shall take our good fortune from us.” Kino is determined to sell the pearl and become rich; no one seems to be able to tell him otherwise. He also says, “This pearl has become my soul. If I give it up, I shall lose my soul.”
Kino, a pearl diver, along his with wife, Juana, and son, Coyotito, live a happy life in La Paz and are part of the Song of the Family, which represents the good things in life. But on one morning however, Coyotito gets stung and poisoned by a scorpion and thus the Song of Evil appears. Soon, everyone in La Paz finds out that Kino has found such an amazing pearl. The doctor who refused to treat Coyotito decides to visit Kino. Kino's neighbors begin to feel bitter toward him for his good fortune, but neither Kino nor Juana realize this feeling they have engendered.
In addition, Kino notices that Juana is crying and realizes what he has done. Finally, when, “Kino’s brain cleared from its red concentration [...] he knew the sound-the keening, moaning, rising hysterical cry from the little cave in the side of the stone mountain, the cry of death”(87). finally, Kino has become so obsessed with protecting the pearl he had forgotten about his own family and their safety. Which now why Coyotito is
The pearl's evil infects Kino like a ravaged disease and consumes his mind. He starts off with good intentions, but they become twisted. He wants to sell the pearl and use the money to better his family's lifestyle. He has dreams and goals that each depends on the pearl selling for a good price. Juana sensing the evil and greed coming from Kino attempts to destroy it. Kino beats her unmercifully. "He struck her in the face and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side...He hissed at her like a snake and she stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes, like a sheep before a butcher." Juana sees through the outer beauty of the pearl and knew it would destroy Kino and herself. Kino's vision from the soul becomes blurred by the possible prosperity the pearl will bring. The evil invades Kino's life as well as everyone he knows and loves.
This point where Kino lost everything and he lost his son. At first, Kino always thought about him. When he got the pearl, he was dreaming that his son would get education. On page 38, ‘Our son must go to school. He must break out of the pot that holds us in.’ The reason why he didn't throw away the pearl was for his son. Coyotito really was a son that Kino had to forfend and give him a good life. The part when he got attack by the man, he thought the man got his pearl. He would scarifies his life or his safety for the pearl because of Coyotito. At this point, he doesn't care if he killed a man but he only cared about the great pearl. On page 53, ‘My son must have a chance. That is what they are striking at.’ This scarifies made him wants his son to succeed in life and he wants him to read and write. He would also scarifies his life to make Coyotito safe by having a plan to attack the trackers, so Juana and Coyotito could escape. Referring back to the novel, ‘There is a way. But they would kill you. If I get first to the one with the rifle. I must get to him first, then I will be all right.’ He’s not scared to make this decision and willing to die for Coyotito. At last, when Coyotito died, he thought the pearl was worthless and threw the pearl back to the sea where it belongs. Now his son died, what is the real reason of keeping the pearl? Nothing really matters when his son died because at that
