In the novel Kino talk to buyers who want to buy the pearl from him and when a few buyer approached him, the first buyer made no offer because he said the earl is a monstrosity. The second buyer said that the pearl would die within a few months. The third but last buyer offered Kino five hundred pesos. Juana knew that the pearl was evil because when Kino and Juana were sleeping at night they heard some noise going on outside there house and when Kino went out there with a knife and Juana came out there with a stone, she saw Kino lying on the ground all bloody and beaten down. At that time when Kino was beaten down, Juana asked Kino to destroy the pearl, but Kino still feels that the pearl would bring good for Coyotito, so Kino decided to go
In the end of the story, Kino realized after Coyotito died because of getting shot, the pearl is worth nothing to him. “If it’s a coyote, this will stop it.” The watcher said as he raised his gun. Kino was in mid-leap when the gun crashed and the barrel-flash made a picture on his eyes.”(pg. 86) He knows the pearl can buy many materials that can support the family but it won't matter because the pearl will not be able to replace their son Coyotito.
Kino was attacked by mean trying to steal the pearl. He killed one of them in self-defense but Juana tells him that does not matter. He will still face consequences from the townspeople once the body is found in the morning.
I think it was good to get rid of the pearl by thourghing it in the back into the ocean or selling it but selling it is best in my opinion than they can have a nice place to live and have good food to eat I think if kino had kept the pearl it would of been stolen and kino and juana would have to go into hiding and coyotito would be able to go to school the pearl brought evil to kino and juana it was good to get rid of it but it would of brought wealth to them if kino and juana sold it. But I still think kino should of went to the capital to sell the pearl he should of done that at the beginning of the book then they wouldn’t have to run away from their home and then kino would not killed the trackers and coyotito would of not died. Then could
In order to sell his pearl for the highest price possible, Kino was forced to go to the capital. This was due to being cheated by the local pearl buyers. “I have been cheated,” Kino cried fiercely. “My pearl is not for sale here. I will go perhaps even to the capital.” By doing so, Kino wasn’t only risking a long journey, but also putting his family in harm’s
In the beginning of the novel, Kino and his family’s religion and culture revolved mainly around songs; such as the Song of the Family and the Song of the Evil. However, after Kino discovered the pearl, he began to ignore the songs, and ignore his culture. Kino’s brother, Juan Tomas, and Juana both suggest him to get rid of the pearl. Making the pearl his main priority instead of his family, Kino ignored their suggestions. If he had listened, no harm would have occurred, and he and his family would still be alive and well. Because of Kino’s obliviousness, he ended up bringing bad luck to his family, rather than the good that he fantasized about. After Kino rejected the offer of one thousand pesos, he declared that he would travel to the Capital and sell the pearl there. However, he did not plan out where he was going to sell it, nor know the exact value of the “Pearl of the World”. This led to his encounter with “the Dark Ones”. The “Dark Ones” burned his house and destroyed his prized heirloom, the canoe. This forced Kino, Juana and Coyotito to flee to the mountains, which ultimately led to Coyotito’s unfortunate
However, Kino was enraged with anger at Juana for trying to throw away his pearl. The pearl had changed him for the worse, it had become part of him he loved the pearl. Kino would do anything to make sure that nothing would happen to it, even if it meant beating up his wife in order to save his pearl.
reality. The pearl should represent happiness and hope. It only represents evil and destructiveness, which is illusion vs. reality- point blank. Kino does not realize the evil of the pearl until the end of the book; he thinks that it will bring his family fortune. Next, the pearl was to be used for Coyotito’s benefit, mostly. The pearl was the main reason that he died. Juan Tomás asks Kino what he will use the money from the pearl for, Kino responds with wanting his son to go to school, Coyotito dies from the tackers trying to get the pearl. Most importantly, the pearl shows greed with Kino and the townspeople. Near the beginning, after Kino found the pearl, the townspeople wonder what they would do if they had that kind of money. Also, Kino hurts his Juana for trying to get rid of the pearl, which shows how the greed got to his
He worked to feed his family, and protect his family from anything that could harm them. So, when Kino found the pearl, this great opportunity, he seemed to change all of his morals and traits that made him the person he was. Juana had noticed the effect that the pearl had on Kino and the whole environment that was around them, so she decided to try and get rid of it herself. When Kino saw Juana down by the water he ran out to her and throw her up against a rock and kicked her in the ribs. His actions showed that in his mind the pearl was worth more to him than Juana was.
Juana begs Kino to get rid of the pearl because she thinks it’s evil, but Kino refuses to get rid of it because he believes
The main life-altering decision that Kino had to make was to retain possession of the pearl or to throw it away, like Juana insisted. “‘Kino, this pearl is evil. Let us destroy it before it destroys us. Let us crush it between two stones. Let us--let us throw it back in the sea where it belongs.
At the beginning of the story they both felt content and happy as show in this quote “Sometimes it rose to an aching chord that caught the throat, saying this is safety, this is warmth, this is the Whole.”. They did not even speak because their understanding was so great. But after Kino found the pearl his relationship steadily deteriorates as shown in this quote “"Kino," she said huskily, "I am afraid. A man can be killed. Let us throw the pearl back into the sea." "Hush," he said fiercely. "I am a man. Hush.”. That shows that as time goes by Kino is acting ruder and harshly to Juana all because of the greed the pearl caused. Another example is "This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us." And in the firelight her lips and her eyes were alive with her fear. But Kino's face was set, and his mind and his will were set” this quote shows that Juana is becoming increasingly fearful yet Kino is sure this is the way and is willing to do whatever is necessary to become wealthy. This causes a strain between their relation. Finally the worst thing Kino commits is the act of attacked Juana. He is described as a snake hissing at her and hitting her that makes her fall. He even continues to kick her after she has fallen and she accepts it and knows he may even murder her. This shows that Kino has broken all limits of humanity and is being consumed by
Juana is given the opportunity to get rid of the pearl, but is attacked by Kino as she tries to throw it in the water. Instead of fighting back, Juana let’s Kino take the pearl. Leaving Juana on the ground where he attacked her, Kino takes the pearl and heads home. Before reaching his destination, he kills a man after being abruptly attacked. Juana decided it would be best to flee the village before Kino is convicted of the crime.
The pearl's evil infects Kino like a ravaged disease and consumes his mind. He starts off with good intentions, but they become twisted. He wants to sell the pearl and use the money to better his family's lifestyle. He has dreams and goals that each depends on the pearl selling for a good price. Juana sensing the evil and greed coming from Kino attempts to destroy it. Kino beats her unmercifully. "He struck her in the face and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side...He hissed at her like a snake and she stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes, like a sheep before a butcher." Juana sees through the outer beauty of the pearl and knew it would destroy Kino and herself. Kino's vision from the soul becomes blurred by the possible prosperity the pearl will bring. The evil invades Kino's life as well as everyone he knows and loves.
To wrap it all up, the type of Good and Evil presented in The Pearl, is not one positive one compared to other situations. Kino could have avoided many problems if it wasn’t for his ignorance. Instead of thinking of reality, he was focused on the future which caused him a big loss and
He imagined a better life for his family. Despite everything that went wrong, despite people telling him to throw the pearl away, Kino continued to believe in the value and importance of the pearl. Early on Juana tried to convince Kino to get rid of the pearl, “‘This pearl is a sin! It will destroy us,’ and her voice rose shrilly ‘ throw it away.’”(John Steinbeck 38). Kino would have ordinarily taken into consideration his wife’s concerns and this was out of character. While under the spell of the pearl, It didn’t matter to him that Juana had his best interest in mind when she advised him to get rid of the pearl. Even after Kino was attacked, he was unwavering in his conviction in the value of the pearl, “but Kino’s face was set, and his will was set” Kino was given many chances to throw away the pearl, but yet he was stubborn and continued to believe in the pearl even though his world was falling apart and even though he could lose
