New York City’s old slum neighbourhood, the Five Points, was notoriously known for its vice and crimes. The first organized crime group in New York City was the Forty Thieves which was led by Edward Coleman, started in 1825, in the back of a grocery store. The Dead Rabbits were an Irish gang in the Five Points area, and are most known for the riot they caused in 1857. The Eastman Gang were a Jewish group in the Five Points area, which began in the late nineteenth century, and were the rival of the Five Points Gang. The Five Points Gang was another group, started by Paul Kelly and included future famous mobsters. In Five Points, where most of New York City’s crime started, it also started some of history’s most notorious gangs, and mobsters. Five Points was a Lower Manhattan neighbourhood named after its five-cornered intersection of Anthony, Orange, and Cross Streets. Five Points is notoriously known as New York City’s most slum neighbourhood. Immigrants, such as the Irish, the Italians, and the Chinese, lived in this neighbourhood. In the present, Five Points does not exist, and is now known as Chinatown. A religious view on the neighbourhood was: “the most notorious precinct of moral leprosy in the city,… a perfect hot-bed of physical and moral pestilence,… a hell-mouth of infamy and wow.” While, Charlie Dicken’s describes the neighbourhood as: “…loathsome, dropping, and decayed” Others asserted that Five Points was the slum neighbourhood, and no other city could rival
Gangs have existed in the United States for over 200 years. It all started when the first immigrants came to the U.S.A. Most of them came for a better life but many of them ended up in poverty. The first gangs were formed among poor adolescents who grouped together for the sake of socialisation and protection. They were of the same race or the same ethnic background. The first known gang specialized in crimes was called "The Five Points". They consisted of Irish immigrants and was established in New York City. They dressed in a specific way and used monikers or nicknames. Another early gang were the "Forty Thieves". Their gang leader was Edward Coleman and they formed in 1826. New York City's early gangs had an easy time of it because of
Gangs originated in New York, during the late 18th century. They consisted of seven infamous groups: “The Forty Thieves, the Bowery Boys, the Dead Rabbits, the Daybreak boys, the Whyos, the Five Points Gang, and lastly the Eastman Gang. Gangs back then when originated was not for the use of criminal activity. Originally their sole purpose was to protect their neighborhood and were mostly common labors. Gangs formed the “basic unit of social life" among the young males in New York in the nineteenth century. More dangerous gangs emerged during the earlier 1900s from the persistent disorder that gripped the city slums, tenements, saloons, and dance halls. However, African Americans history to gang activity differentiates from this timeline.
The neighborhood of Five Points was essentially forged by racism and hate. It was a place where African Americans fled from all the negativity. It was not always this way; when the neighborhood was founded in the 1880s, it had a large Jewish population. From there on the population only grew more and more diverse. This diversity aided in a way, the boom that occurred in the 1930s and 40s. people of all types came to Five Points, everything from janitors
New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low-income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City’s infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist’s areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low-income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low-income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.
In the north and south of the United States, there are many differences in culture. The weather, the population, and the economy are a few. They both have the same language but are spoken in two different accents. You can always tell the difference between the two.
New York City is a very famous place all over the world. A lot of people think that it is the best place to live. However, some people have a different point of view. I think that New York City is a good place to live for two reasons.
suit. They got their car that was parked in the parking structure and went off to go explore the new city that they would hopefully call home for the rest of their lives. They found one of the best pizza places to eat in New York and sat down to eat because it was really packed and from the outside there was people standing outside. After they went to go check out where the mighty brooklyn dodgers played which was a day that they had a game against the giants, their rivals. They weren't gonna see the game but they pulled to the side right in front of the stadium while the game was going on. You could feel the energy of the crowed going off inside that way they could get their game. They got off the car and you could see inside the stadium
The documentary New York: The center of the World (1946-2003) talks about the one of the most monumental architectures that would change the life of many people around the world, from its grand opening in 1973 to its destruction in September of 2001. The documentary talks about the World Trade Center. The documentary begins as America itself began to rise in power through globalization in the decades following the war; the twin towers of the World Trade Center were and will always symbolize the center of economic systems that would come to direct much of the face of the planet.
There are many health hazards associated with urbanization, and this picture of New York City’s Five Points neighborhood illustrates many of those dangers. For example, in the foreground of the picture there is a pig on the street. Animals added to the waste accumulation problem in the city and its streets. There is a water pump that many people are using which displays a serious health hazard. The water was most likely from ground water that came from a polluted canal. Thirdly, the street in this image is very overcrowded. The high density of people contributed to the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, the sky appears to be gray and muggy, hinting at air pollution. This pollution caused nausea, which could have led to poor digestion
Donald Trump speaks among a crowd of hundreds: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” This is how a portion of American citizens perceive immigrants, and as the 2016 Presidential election gets closer the word “immigration” gets treated more delicately as if it were a new phenomenon. However, immigration is no new or delicate subject for New York City. In fact, residents (like in Queens) find it odd if a New Yorker isn’t of hybrid generation (Eichenbaum, Tour). The history of New York City has been painted by the millions and millions of immigrants that have touched its land. It’s a cycle: one group of immigrants come, stay, and leave while another new group of immigrants settle down. This continuous sequence is what makes New York City such an innovative city when it comes to immigrants.
In 2000, it was the first time in history for more people living in cities than ever before. People moved to cities because they had a dream of a better life, and better opportunities for them and their children. London was the first city to build the first underground subway system, later many megacities joined. After Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, factories started opening for night shifts employing thousands of workers. The 24-hour city was born; the city that never sleeps. It made everyone want to be part of the new urban. The documentary mentioned few different points in cities.
The third problem you need to address is hygiene in New York City. New York city is the main hub of the country but the cleanliness of its streets is not up to the mark. On the garbage day, Broadway will smell badly as the garbage bags are arranged on the platforms. This is the genesis of many diseases. My friend had suffered a hygiene related disease and it resulted in reducing the mind and body coordination. If these kinds of diseases continue to spread, there would be thousands of diseases like this in the next few years. To avoid this, the city should be clean by clearing the garbage as soon as possible. Every street should be assigned a specific timeframe between ten to twenty minutes for the garbage truck to pick up the garbage bags.
“Next stop will be New York Penn station, I repeat New York Penn station.” The loud voice of the conductor echoed. I have just woken up from my long nap from New Jersey, and opened my eyes with the vision of people rising up from their seats in unison as if it was a rehearsed dance piece. It took me a moment to realize that I am about to step into the streets of New York City, the Big Apple. This has been a dream of mine since I was a child and a streak of excitement shook me as I rose from my seat. The train comes to a screeching break, bringing all of us to a harsh stop, and the hissing doors open welcoming us to Penn station New York City!
No other city has the best and brightest people along with the most breathtaking views in America. New York City is unlike any other city that can be visited worldwide. With the busiest streets, everyone is making their dreams happen in the city where everything begins. New York has countless options of things to do for tourists but it’s impossible to stop at every attraction. In the city that never sleeps, the most important highlights are Central Park, Broadway, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
The City of New York’s population is just under 8,500,000. It is one of the most populated and crowded cities in the United States, so obviously this would be one of the last place someone would want to be lost. Being in such a huge city is already genuinely overwhelming for someone from South Dakota. As a family, we had already been to Chicago, a larger city. We thought we would have a pretty good handle on how to navigate through so many people. As it turns out, we were much too confident for our own good.
