The world is a very interesting place. The earth has temperatures from 136 to -126 degrees Fahrenheit, depths of over 35,000 feet, and heights of over 29,000 feet. These climates and elevations ultimately shape the human world. Habitats everywhere from humid rainforest to the scorching desert each support an ecosystem of their own. The setting of anything, whether a fantasy story or an academic documentary, is very important. Nothing lives in a vacuum. The setting of the novel Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is a very interesting place which plays a pivotal role in the book’s development of character, plot, and theme.

However, setting is essential to pay attention to because it creates the message of the story; this is done by describing the geographic location, time, surroundings, and small details that help the reader have a better comprehension of the literature. For example, the protagonist mentions the uncomfortable and difficult situations they must endure due to the extremely dry climate. The quote, “Outside, the water has been sucked from everything. The veins in the leaves are hollow, the ditch grass is crackling. The sky has absorbed every drop. It’s a thin whitish-blue veil stretched from end to end over us, a flat gauze tarp,” helps to describe the setting (Erdrich). The setting is presented in the beginning of the story as one of the hottest days of June and takes place in the town of Argus, Dakota. The lack of rain creates concerns about the growth and prosperity of vegetation in the
Chapter 1 A young woman appears out of nowhere and quickly catches up to another who's dashing along a moonlit lane. "Are we late?" She asks as she falls into step besides the older woman. "No not yet, but we need to hurry, we don't have much time." "Follow me," the older woman replies, and her dark cloak billows about casting shadows on the high stone walls that border the lane. They walked side by side in silence for a long ways and then through a set of huge iron gates swung opened before them and onto a narrow driveway. A manor house grew out of the darkness at the end of the straight drive, lights glinting in the windows. Gravel crackled beneath their feet as speeding toward the front door, which swung inward at their approach, though
I agree with the statement made by Neil Gaiman in the introduction to Fahrenheit 451 which states, “Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.” He states, “fiction is a lie” this is true because fictionial stories tell of events that did not reallt happen and a lie is a false statements. After this Gainman says, “that tells us true things over and over again” i also agree with this because there is truth in every lie and there is truth in every story. One of teh themes of Fahreheit 451 is that knowledge is power and that power is feuled by reading. The truth that is reapeated is that reading is important. Reading si important because reading gives us knowege and that knowledge allows us to graet things.
The Door in the Wall is a thrilling tale that has much symbolism about opportunity’s that can spring up out of disappointment. Marguerite de Angeli who wrote this book, published it in 1949. It is set in England during middle ages, as the bubonic plague was sweeping through. Robin the main character is a young boy who looses the movement of his legs and now can’t become a knight like his father. This symbolizes a door shutting. He then learns how to carve things and play an instrument similar to a harp. This is a door opening. The characters in the story highlight easy and hard times proving that anyone can have doors opened and closed in their lives.
Four days later, September 28, police discovered a girl’s body in a soybean field near a convenience store in the rural Red Springs, Robeson County of North Carolina. After forensic identification, the body, indeed, belonged to Sabrina Buie, who was naked except for a bra pushed up against her neck (Katz). Sabrina’s autopsy revealed that she had been raped, suffocated and left to dead in the field. From a report of a missing child, the investigation began as a capital murder case. Everybody in the town was shocked upon hearing of Sabrina’s death.
Hyde this happens during then night. The night also makes the story seem more eerie because things can hide in the dark. It also gives an impression that doors lock away the secrets people try to hide. When the maid sees the murder at night it’s as if the window is a shield and you can see them but they can’t see you. It’s keeping you interested because of the horror aspect of the windows and doors/doorways but it could also keep you interested because every time a doorway or window was mentioned you’d know that something eerie is going to soon happen. For example the door that Dr. Jekyll uses (during the day) is very pleasant and nice.
The story is about a popular, girl named Harper Jane Price, whose life soon changes when she is trapped in the bathroom with a dying janitor. Harper ran into the ladies restroom to put on her favorite lip gloss before the homecoming dance, when the door was suddenly closed and locked by the janitor, Mr. Hall. He was panting and visibly wounded, and as she leaned down to help him, he pulled himself up to kiss her, dying right after. Dr. DuPont, her history teacher, flew into the restroom with a scimitar, ready to kill Harper. When he ran at Harper, an unknown super strength kicked in and Harper killed Dr. DuPont with her stiletto heel. Harper walked back into the bathroom to get her lip gloss a little while later and she saw that both of their bodies had disappeared like nothing had

We also see walls/doors as a symbol that is ensuring the isolation of the characters. Each character will be analyzed through the text first, and then I will analyze using other critics’ perspective on the issue.
The novel is set in Yorkshire, a barren landscape in an isolated region of Northern England. The detailed descriptions of the environment allow the mood and tone of the novel to be revealed.
The central theme of all Gothic novels is the presence and symbolism of the Gothic castle. Depiction of ruinous abbeys, monasteries, subterranean passages, vaults, secret panels, and the trapdoors is a standard method of achieving the atmosphere. Howells sees the Gothic castle as being ‘a shadowy world of ruins and twilight scenery lit up from time to time by lurid flashes of passion and violence ’(6). Therefore, the gloominess of the exterior and interior environment is illuminated by intense emotional and passionate moments of the characters that inhabit the castle. As Sage claims, the castle is ‘the lair of the villain’(166), and it is an accurate reflection of his dark and frightening character. Gloomy, dark, and dangerous, the castle reflects the emotions and psychological experience of many of the novel’s characters.
