How Snapchat is a distraction Facebook has significantly decreased the interest of many college students, since the innovation of the famous Snapchat. Snapchat has certainly enjoyed a relatively fast rise to prominence in the digital world. What started out just a couple of years ago as a somewhat obscure mobile network, has gone mainstream in a big way and is now on the radar of some of the largest digital firms out there. With more than 100 million daily active users and being one of the top social medias used today; Snapchat has become a classroom distraction for many college students. What many Snapchat users do not realize is the impact it has on their grades and schoolwork. Snapchatting has become a smartphone sensation. The application, which allows users to “snap” a photo or short video of themselves, and then share it with friends, who can only view snaps for up to 10 seconds until it automatically deletes it, has opened the doors for a new method of chatting among millennials and other social media users. “A new study says that college students who are on Snapchat while studying or doing homework wind up getting 20 percent lower grades than students who don't have the social networking site in visual range.” Another group of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found that college students who went to bed later than 11:30 p.m. on school nights have lower GPAs than those who got to bed earlier. Many people may not be fully aware of how big of an impact social media has in their academic

Among all the social media sites, one that is particularly popular is Snap chat. Most college and high school students check this app before twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Instagram noticed this trend early and tried to buy out snapchat, but their attempt failed and now snapchat has not only influenced its opens to copy its stories idea but also almost copy the format exactly. In my paper I will discuss two different articles that both focus on the topic of snap chat usage. I will also contrast these two articles and reveal how they have similar findings but different approaches.
Photos and videos taken with the application are called snaps. Snapchat uses the device's camera to capture snaps and Wi-Fi technology to send them. The app allows the sender to draw or insert text on the snap and determine how many seconds (one to 10) the recipient can view it before the file disappears from the recipient's device. Messages can only be viewed once -- and during the viewing period, the recipient must maintain contact with the device's touchscreen or the snap disappears. Snapchat has come under fire in recent days for its filters, such as the “flower crown” filter, the “butterfly wreath” filter and the popular “beauty” filter.

For the experiment, we used a within-subjects design since we chose to use the same group of participants, University of Florida students, and had them exposed to two different treatments at different points of time. Our experiment also had a longitudinal design with measuring before versus after effects. At first, the control was utilized to assess the situation in the store with no “nudges”, then the treatment was put into action to overcome the current challenges and grow overall consumer awareness . Furthermore, the treatment was to influence students’ behavior with the Snapchat story by provoking a triggered, emotional response and the control was no change or action performed. To gather numerical evidence, an in-store tracker was employed

SnapChat is a photo messaging application (App) developed by Evan Spiegel and Robert Murphy. Both of the founders were Stanford students. The application was initially developed for a project at Stanford. This app allows the user to share photos, videos, add text/drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. Users have the benefit of setting a time limit for how long the recipient can view their snaps (Ranging from 1 - 10 seconds), after which the photos/videos will be hidden from the recipient’s device and deleted from SnapChat’s servers. The smalltime college project developed into a huge social media success due to its innovative feature (Magid, 2013).
on keeping a record of events for the user but Snapchat does not. It almost appears as if Snapchat is rebelling against the idea of permanence. Snapchat aims to apply through technological means the temporal time-bound paradigm that characterizes oral cultures (Soffer, 2016). An image becomes a photograph, in part, by having borders. The frame makes the photo. Tellingly, a Snapchat usually exists unframed, full-screen, more moment than an art object. Less than sharing experience-trophies and hoping communication happens around them, an ephemeral network leaves the art objects to fade in favor of focusing on the moments, the experience, the communication; more social than media, more social than network. (Jurgenson, 2014). The Snapchat users like the idea of a safe place where they can control what is shared with the world. Experts in the field of communication state that the ephemeral messaging compels users to do more with less, often generating a better brand. Snapchat’s popularity has helped spur other private messaging apps but none are as successful as Snapchat. The real time communication protocol is what Snapchat is all about. Snapchat keeps people connected without it being public. Some individuals seek the privacy afforded by Snapchat. Snapchat allows the viewer to see the actual face expressions, which allows for better understanding. Snapchat is very much like a conversation taking place, where you can see the person but you can’t go back or rewind
