Nausea is nothing to worry about for one who is pregnant; just as Amy Fitzpatrick had no concern until her symptoms steadily worsened to the point of being severe. Amy's symptoms went from a continuous queasy feeling to a loss of appetite and being unable to stand strong odors. However, she still viewed this as a normal part of the pregnancy and went to Virginia to visit family despite being unable to sit up the entire trip. During this time, her condition began to deteriorate at a faster rate than before. She was now unable to hold down any food or liquids and she was eventually admitted into a hospital where she spent a few hours receiving intravenous nutrients. Amy continued to feel sick, she was unable to do the slightest thing without the feeling worsening, and, over the next couple weeks, her condition got to the point where she was vomiting five to six times a day and lost twelve pounds. After the weight loss, her doctor began to try prescribing different nausea pills to control the symptoms and allow Amy to eat; every pill failed or had no effect. The doctor also ordered blood tests, ultrasounds, and consultations with countless other doctors; no alternative cause was found. Fitzpatrick began to try her own remedies which included: herbal therapy, chinese massage, water with lemon, ginger, and sea-bands. However, these remedies also failed to prevent the vomiting and she became sicker in her fourth month. Amy continued to lose weight, sixteen pounds, and was eventually admitted to GWUH and on intravenous nutrition again.
