Nature vs Nurture Have you ever wondered “Why does she act like this?” Well, nature and nurture can help with that. Nature is what makes up who you are in the future. It takes all of the things from the past and ties them together to make who you are now. It changes in what you see, hear, think, and do. Everyone has something in common. Nurture is great just like nature, but it has some things that are different. Nature is how a child is raised by society and friends. It changes how you act, look, and feel about yourself. Things that happen in your childhood affect how you are now. Out in town could affect how you feel about things. Nature and nurture are both important to everyone. They both affect how you learn and grow. Everything has a
Have you ever heard the phrase nature vs nurture, well If you haven't you're about to. The nature vs nurture debate is a very complex debate that has been around for along time, scientist have also done many studies to find out which is has more effect on a person. Nature is what makes you who you are and is part of you from when you are born and when you die. Nurture is how a person is raised and what a person learns from experiences, this can always change.
The issues pitting nature against nurture are exceptionally significant for the gamut of discoveries that attribute an increasing proportion of traits and behaviours to one's genetic makeup. The resulting variety of physical shortcomings and limitations in each person has, for centuries, been countered by endeavours to improve or interfere where necessary, and every individual is consequently the product of a delicate middle path of balance between the two.
In the world of psychology, there has been a long occurring debate over Nature v. Nurture, and the influence it has in people. One of the debates in nature v. nurture is if criminality is caused by genes (nature) or if it’s by the person’s environment (nurture). In an attempt to receive information, psychologist have observed twins and adopted children to try and see if shared genes or environmental changes show an explanation to this phenomenon.
From Dr. Money’s perspective, raising Bruce as a girl would allow him to live a “normal” life, if he were to live his life without a penis, he would be seen as an outsider and rejected from society. He also suggested to put Bruce on estrogen, but also surgically give him a cosmetic vagina. Dr. Money explained to Ron and Janet that Bruce/Brenda, would psychologically mature as a woman, and be attracted to men, as well as be able to have sexual intecourse, without a problem. According to Bruce’s parents, there was no reason “that it shouldn’t work” (50). However, they could have thought it out thoroughly, what if Brenda didn’t feel comfortable in her own skin? Would she feel as though something is wrong with her? This is where the topic of
Nature vs Nurture debate is the representation that society is an organism, but the question is do we inherently possess the knowledge to function as an organism, or are we taught this skill. The debate over Nature vs Nurture is more of a struggle about which theory is the correct theory in my opinion. Social behaviors can be the product of both genetics as well as an influence by our environment.
When we compare nature to nurture, we have to know what they mean. Nature is looking at the genetics, and the biological way you are made. Something you have usually have no control over. There have been some serial killers in
Children are a precious gift that many people are blessed with. Unfortunately, many children are thrown into environments and situations that no one should ever be faced with. Children are often born into families of crime or live in a criminal environment. The question that everyone is wondering, does genetics play a role in a criminal behaviors and actions or does an environmental factor play a role in criminal behaviors. The big debate of nature versus nurture will be discussed.
In the article “What is nature vs nurture?” by Kendra Cherry it mentions, “... Tabula, which suggests that the mind begins as a blank slate… everything that we are and all of our knowledge is determined by our experiences”. A man does not grow up hating everyone and everything but is innocent; changed by society and it’s ways. As children we don’t have our own mindset but more of “a blank slate”. Man begins to follow and take over the habits of what they grew up seeing, both good and bad. Society has it’s ways in getting to people and pushing them to their limit and as a child we are exposed to how others react to those limits being passed. The more man is exposed to hatred the more man begins to grow hate towards what they
Both nature and nurture has influences our personal developments. An example of how nature influenced my personal development is that my dad completed high school and went to college. I think that was a big help with me because I’m doing the same thing. Some people think that nature doesn’t influence person development. People think that because your parents could have dropped out of high school, but you completed high school and went to college. Nurture also can help with personal development because the environment helps you make certain decisions. The people you hang around most are most likely to influence you. If you see your friends doing something that you know is wrong what would you do? Some people will do it too because their friends influence them to do bad things. Others will walk away because their parents are good people and they have the same good traits as their parents. In my personal development both nature and nurture influenced me. Nature because both my mom and dad are quiet people and I feel like that has influenced me because I’m quiet too. There are many other ways that they have influenced me also. Some examples would be working every day to get whatever I need. I see my mom and dad working hard so I feel like I should do the same thing. The environment has influenced me a lot also. An example of how the nurture influenced my
Nurture refers to all the environmental factors that influence what kind of people we are. These include our experiences growing up as a child, our relationships with others around us, and the culture that they are accustomed to. Nick Collins's online article, Nature vs. Nurture: Outcome Depends on Where You Live, argued that your environment impacted the person you are and the personalities you develop. “In London, environment played a greater role than genetics- possibly because wealth varies so dramatically within communities, meaning twins growing up on the same street are more likely to fall in with different groups of friends who could influence their behavior” (Collins). Although a pair of twins can be relatively similar when it comes
The theory of Nature vs Nurture is the controversial notion that people are born a certain way, as opposed to the concept that people are a result of the environments they have been molded by. I am wholeheartedly a result of the environment I was raised up in, however, I am also proudly a deviation of the ambiance of the Western Bronx. As I step out of my building, the obnoxious slam of Domino pieces hitting tables and Bachata music blasting from cars infiltrates the aura of Marble Hill. This was a typical day in 228th Street’s tightknit community. As a Dominican, we are constantly making the best out of the difficult cards we are dealt. We, Dominicans, come here for a better life, yet our success stops at minimum-wage jobs. You are faced with a dilemma when you come from a place like I do:
- The argument between whether the determining factor of a person character is based primarly on nature or nurture is an argument that can go pretty much either way depending on the experience of the person who is asked. While many would say that nature is more of the dominate factor because it deals with heredity, an equally strong point could be made about nurture because it deals with ones social environment. Personally I believe that both play major roles in the development of a person character but the role of nurture slightly outweighs nature when it comes to this area. I say this because even if a person is bound to develop certain negative traits, if they are put in a structured environment where the development of those traits can
Attributing gender differences to nature or nurture is too simplistic. Simon Baron Cohen, professor of developmental psychopathology at the University of Cambridge, says “those who argue that gender difference is attributed to nurture are oversimplifying the interaction of biology and experience” (University of Cambridge, 2012). What does nature versus nurture mean in regards to gender differences? Those who believe gender differences are biological and inherent in the makeup of a male brain versus a female brain attribute it to nature. Those who believe nurture explains gender differences in males and females believe it is due to cultural stereotypes, and the family environment the child is raised in. I believe that both nature and nurture
Q) What was the basis of doctors reasoning to raise David (named Bruce at birth) as a girl? Explain the doctors reasoning in relation to nature versus nurture theories.
For centuries, criminologists and scholars alike have explored different theories to help determine what causes one to engage in deviant behavior. In this paper, I will discuss one of the longest standing criminological disputes, nature versus nurture. After describing both theories in detail, I will determine whether I believe our intelligence, behaviors, and personality traits are genetically predetermined or if they are a product of our environment and the way in which we were raised.
