Genetic and environmental impacts on intelligence have been known as “the nature versus nurture” debate. The arguments supporting the biological or the environmental implications that influence the way we think, learn, and behave have been popular topics among psychologists, researchers, and educators. This is by far one of my favorite theories because it addresses all the different methods in which our children learn. I support the yes for nature side because to me it is all about where you grow up and how you were raised. The human nature is to do something that is wrong if you are not told that that is wrong. If your parents don't care about what you do and let you get away with anything than you will not know about what is right and what is wrong. If your parents teach you the values of life, how to have manners and everything else a good parent would teach their kid then they will be more respectful and have manners.

For decades, psychologists have argued about the relative influence if heredity (genes) versus environment (experience) on thought and behavior. More recently, psychologists have begun studying the extent to which genetic differences only appear in specific environments, and the extent to which certain experiences only affect people with particular genetic predispositions (Champagne, 2009). This complex issue surfaces most clearly in our discussion of behavior genetics, intelligence, development, personality, and abnormal psychology (Morris & Maisto, p. 5).
Once a person has an idea of what intelligence is and what it means, a final thought one might consider is what influences are responsible for the different types of intellect. Two possible influences are genetics and the environment in which one lives, with genetics being the strongest influence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Most researchers agree that a person’s genetics and environment interact with one another to influence the outcome of that person’s intelligence (Santrock, 2009, pg. 302). Genetic influences should be pretty obvious, so there should be no need to explain it; a person’s environment on the other hand, can involve several factors. An environment can consist of elements such as a person’s school, home, friendships, family relationships, and workplaces. All of these components factor in to influence a person’s intelligence.

Is it true that some people are born with high intelligence, but are limited by their environment? Given the proper tools, can a person increase their intelligence? How accurate are IQ tests?
