One of the most glaring problems in the American life today is the number of gun related deaths. Though there are many forms: homicide, suicide or accident, the worst are the mass shootings that have continually plagued our schools, movie theaters and malls for the last few decades. With the number of these shootings constantly on the rise, chances are, we all have a personal connection to at least one or know someone does. I’m from Denver, CO, and my mother attended Columbine High School in the 80’s. In 1999, Columbine was the site of one of the most significant school shootings in our country’s history so I was only a few months old when I got my first minor connection to a major shooting. But it’s another experience that shaped my views on this.

This essay is a reflect of the preoccupation of the authors for putting guns in the hand of campuses. Even though this worry should include students, parents and society in general, not only the writers. It pretty clear their purpose is to get attention about this topic. They have right when say colleges are safer than majority of public places. Nonetheless, I disagree with some points posed it.

Allowing guns on campus would likely lead to more campus homicides and suicides. Young adults between the ages of 18-25 experience the highest rate of serious mental illness. Between 9% and 11% of college students seriously considered suicide in the previous school year, and about 1,100 college students commit suicide each year. When a gun enters this mix, a suicide attempt becomes considerably more lethal, as 85% of gun suicide attempts are fatal. For these probable occurrences, I say the campuses directors or even the government shouldn’t allow guns because it could lead to various injuries and deaths.

     When our forefathers sat down to write the bill of rights they made ten basic rules or freedoms that all Americans are entitled to. For hundreds of years no one has questioned any of those freedoms, that is until recent years. The second amendment gives Americans the right to bear arms. The purpose of this amendment is to be able to form a militia in order to be able to overthrow a repressive government. In recent years the availability and number of guns in the United States has increased. With the media tracking and recording violence, some Americans have begun to question the 2nd amendment’s relevance.

A gun can kill people if people use it in the wrong way. However, in the U.S., people are allowed to carry guns to protect themselves, even though a gun is dangerous for people. The relationship between guns and the U.S. has been discussed in the past and present. How about in the school? Should people use a gun to protect themselves on campus? Carrying guns on campus is also allowed in some states. People have different views on this issue, but they should consider student’s safety first. Because guns are dangerous, teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at schools.

With recent mass shootings on college campuses around the country, the discussion of guns on campus has become a topic of debate. The topic has been heavily debated across the nation. People are discussing if students, teachers, and campus security should carry, and the rules and regulations in between. There have been protests and advocate groups for both sides on campuses all over the country. Bills have been presented nationwide and most are vetoed.There are currently five states that have passed the law allowing concealed carry on campus. Most recently the state of Texas passed a law saying students can carry a concealed weapon on campus. I firmly believe no student or faculty member, on campus, should carry a weapon.

Students and teachers often think that school shootings could never occur in their school, but school shootings can happen anywhere. They keep happening with acceleration, which makes it more likely that it could happen at any school. Anyone who lives anywhere could shoot up a school, regardless of size. I believe the only way to slow school shootings from happening as often relies on protecting our schools with more security.

In 2012, terror struck an unsuspecting Sandy Hook Elementary School located in Newtown, Connecticut; Adam Lanza is the known perpetrator of committing the violent act on over 20 school children. The main problem was how Adam Lanza had obtained a gun even though he had countless mental illnesses, contributing to why he should not have been in possession of a gun (Vogel). Guns create problems and problems such as guns end in death. Since gun laws will put obstacles in the way of criminals, will not disturb the second amendment, and will have the possibility to save lives, gun control is an excellent solution for controlling crime; therefore, more gun control is needed.
