Gun violence is a topic that has been a very controversial topic all throughout the world since there have been a ridiculous amount of shooting tragedies. Through this article, a student from a high school in Maryland reached out to President Trump and his administration to voice her concerns about the topic. Although she is not the first to share her opinion aloud, her message especially stood out since she used a combination of strong effective words, and claims throughout her letter. This, then deeply impacts the US government since many will come to support the student’s viewpoints, pressuring the government to engage in some solutions.
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. (Words with Negative Connotation) These are just some of the biggest mass shootings that have swept America in the past few years. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. So many families and loves ones are affected each year in the United States because of gun related violence and other mass killing events, because of these events gun control laws need to be revamped and strengthened in American in order to protect the citizens.
According to Dan Gross’s presentation, his dream for a better future is to cut down the number of gun deaths by a half in the USA by 2025. In 1997, Gross’s little brother was shot in the head at the observation deck at the empire state building and has to suffer brain damage for life. This tragedy is not only for his family but also to the many families that keep losing their loved ones each day. 90 Americans are killed everyday by guns and some of these killings go unnoticed. Gross says that there are over 300 million guns out in homes of Americans to keep their families safe. But everyday, 9 kids are shot unintentionally in homes and 2/3 of school shootings that occur are from guns taken from home. This is because a lot of technology that
When tragic, major events happen in the United States, you can always expect an argument or something to unfold about how to prevent something similar from happening again. On October 1st, a man named Stephan Paddock, shot and killed 59 people including himself, while injuring an additional 546. This shooting is now considered the deadliest attack in United States history, so of course you can expect an ongoing political conversation on how to prevent attacks like this. During the attack, Paddock used what is called a “bump stock,” on many of his guns, making his guns’ rapid fire, like an automatic gun, which is what made it so easy for him to open fire and attack so many. After the tragic event, a gun control organization looked into the
Upon reading the article, “What If We Treated Gun Violence Like A Public Health Crisis?” and watching the news every now and then, there are many major tragedies surrounding around us. It is absolutely scary, and only seems to be getting worse. The article starts off with the statement that, “More than 30,000 people a year are killed by gun violence,” making it clear just how serious the situation pertaining gun violence is (Kodjak, 2017, p. 1). Yet, this statistic does not even take into consideration the amount of people who are injured due to gun violence, which would sky rocket this total.
The media and the government have all been shining a cascade of unfortunate lies on suppressors. All these tragic shootings have all come to one unfortunate conclusion: firearms are bad and must be restricted or even banned. The truth is, these events haven’t even had suppressors involved in them. This is quite an unfortunate thing since suppressors can do so much good in all aspects of their use. Suppressors are a device used to reduce the decibel level of the rifle's muzzle blast, through a system of baffles that redirect the air coming out of the barrel reducing the noise output. They are threaded onto the end of a rifle, shotgun, or pistol barrel. Suppressors should be taken off the NFA, the National Firearms Act, which is an act passed
The modern world is full of different opinions, values, and beliefs. The people behind these beliefs often find it hard to connect with the ideas of others. America is so divided on some many topics that it’s hard not to hear about these topics on a daily basis. One such topic is gun control and restriction of firearms for civilians. There are those who want to see the ownership of guns phased out entirely, and those who would rather die defending their firearms than concede to a tyrannical government. While most people don’t share those beliefs, that’s the kind of opinions you’ll see portrayed on media. The liberal left and the conservative right like to slander the other sides merit by showing the most radical people from each side. Philosophers have debated this mindset of us and them, as we see with the left and right. In some cases, they can live together in harmony, in others they can’t. Kwame Anthony Appiah is a philosopher that believes both can live in harmony by using universal values. What I am proposing isn’t a universal value, per say, but rather an opportunity for compromise. This proposal is focused around gun violence, laws, and regulations.
As Americans, we are very used to the scene after a new mass shooting happens: outrage, fear, and families suffering the death of their beloved ones. Politicians start debating on gun policy, again, arriving at no solution. This has been America’s reality for the past decades. The problem in which lobbyists and a dominant minority stop any attempt to find a solution. Dan Gross, as president of the Brady Campaign, is seeking to promote sensible gun control in the United States. Mr. Gross advocates for gun control and for laws that put a stop to the gun violence problem (Ted Talk). Another article by Tom McCarthy in The Guardian gives some data and ideas about what gun control would look like. McCarthy’s article gives us a context in which
Acts of violence involving a gun is definitely a social norm in this day and age as mass shootings and cases involving firearms increase daily. Many cases like Sandy Hook and our most recent Vegas mass shooting have shown us how easy it is to acquire and use gun as well as assault weapons. Just this year, there has been over 40,000 incidents involving a gun according to The Gun Violence Archive. The regulation of said weaponry through gun control allows for a safer environment revolving around the use and availability of firearms. With stricter gun laws, the number of victims shall decrease and lives will be saved.
The issue of gun violence has been plaguing American society for an extensive period of time. In just this year, there have 1,957 people that have died with the use of a gun, and a sizeable portion of that problem is the ease of accessibility. President Obama is tightening restrictions on who can acquire guns, and he is tracking illegal channels where criminals acquire their weapons. Because of his executive order, there has been mass controversy as result since many conceive of his proposal as infringing on the second amendment, but they must realize that the loss of life guns cause is a more pressing concern because it is the government’s fundamental to duty to protect its citizens. This proposal could aid in resolving the gun violence in
When I started this project, I wanted to find out about what the country is doing to stop gun violence and what we the people are doing. If the government and the people can stop epidemics and global issues throughout the world what is stopping them from fixing this problem with gun violence. Now that I’ve learned more about this topic, I understand that the majority of people are pushing and are supportive of change, but the government is not fully committed to helping solve this problem. To make a change WE have to do something. One theme that appeared in my internet research, survey, and interviews was that most people wanted gun laws to change, but don't know how to change it where both parties are happy. With the information that I gathered from the
Gun violence is an issue that is still not under control in America, being that practically anyone can access a gun and own one, illegally or legally. There are various opinions of the topic and how it should be handled. Some strongly back their second amendment right, some are completely against guns, and some have a mixed opinion. I believe that gun violence is an issue that affects thousands across the country and needs to be controlled.
Gun control is a vital necessity to the welfare of our nation. Many people out there are supporting the “anti- gun control cause” with the excuse of “self-defense”. I believe that not everyone will handle a gun for self-defense. The possession of a gun is a sign of power. One of the bigger ambitions that one has is to have power and the easier it is to obtain a gun; the faster a criminal will gain power over an innocent person. When one is in possession of a gun, that person has complete control of their actions and may act upon the weapon however the person may please even if they know that their action will cause harm to defense-less people. There are many deaths caused by guns out there that could have been stopped by controlling the
Eighty hours of training is not enough for most educators to prepare physically and mentally in terms of efficiently handling school shooting situations. An exception of a minority of teachers, who were serving as Marines Corps officers, might be willing to be armed with gun because of their firearm experience. Nevertheless, a number of those teachers are minor, compared to the majority of teachers, who have never been in any training of gun skills. If arming teachers becomes an officially nationally policy, eighty-hour training is not enough for teachers to efficiently use guns. In South Dakota, educators have joined the program named “school sentinels” that allows them to be armed with weapons. In order to qualify this program, teachers have to not only “be approved by the school board or a law enforcement agency,” but also take a class with “eighty hours
Some kids can't tie their shoes, but they can fire a firearm. There are so many parents that don't put away their guns. Toddlers are killing themselves and their parents. Adults should always have their guns unloaded as well as put away.
