The movie starts in 1902, in an island where a family has lived for generations, since the slavery times. Part of this family, wants to leave the Island, but another part wants to preserve the traditions staying in the island. So the whole movie is about the struggle of the members of this family, in relation to leaving or not leaving the Island. Disney has faced a large amount of criticism from critics over the tropes and stereotypes that it portrays in its animated films. This is not a recent event however. One of Disney’s most notorious and controversial films, Song of The South, was released in 1946. Song of the South, set during the Reconstruction Era, focuses on a young boy named Johnny who learns that his parents will being living apart for an unknown amount of time, moves to a plantation in Georgia, while his father continues to live in Atlanta. Depressed and confused over the recent events Johnny decides to run away to Atlanta, but is drawn to the voices of Uncle Remus, an ex-slave living on the plantation, telling stories of Br’er Rabbit. Although it is implied that the African American workers are no longer Johnny’s family property, the black characters are still wholly subservient and are happy to be so. James Baskett plays Uncle Remus as a blissfully, happy companion ready to please. Due to this “magical negro” trope, the characters’ ridiculously stereotypical voices, and the unrealistic happy and joyful relationship between the white landowners and their black help, Song of The South, is one of Disney’s most offensive, racist, and fictitious film. Disney’s portrayal of Uncle Remus is his veiled justification of the mistreatment that minorities received before and after the Reconstruction Era.

This film is a coming of age story that follows the dramatic ups and downs of the life of Chiron, a young Africa American man growing up in Miami. The plot begins from the time he is in elementary school to the time he reaches adulthood. The plot is structured in three stages of the life of Chiron and touches on the topics of the struggle of dysfunctional households via socialization, sexuality and sexual identity, physical and emotion abuse, and the process of accepting ones self.

From films such as 2001 A Space Odyssey to Clock Work Orange he has created a lot masterpieces that have survived the test of time. By far one of his most popular works is The Shining which was released in 1980. Many film makers use different tools to analyze films and figure out meanings behind them. Kubrick was known for not explaining his work in any capacity. In order to figure out why he made the films the way that he did film critics use mise-en-scenes. Through the use of a mise-en-scene, the pantry scene is going to be analyzed to figure out the deeper meaning. This essay is going to explore what a mise-en-scene is and why the scene is used while also conducting a mise-en-scene to analyze a scene from all aspects of cinematography.

Identity is transitional. Not one identity is held constant throughout one’s life. Thus, the intersectionality of one’s identity conveys how complicated humans are. This complex nature of humans is brought to life in the movie Moonlight. Directed by Barry Jenkins, this coming of age film explores the many facets of identity in the main character, Chiron. Chiron is not the only fully thought character; every named character parallels people of all walks of life. Through the intricacies of the characters, stereotypes are presented and shattered. But, the film’s central point is not to counter stereotypes. Moonlight tells a story of reality where stereotypes are rooted in truth. Consequently, Moonlight plays into a majority of stereotypes of class, race, gender, and sexual orientation.

Humans are constantly criticized for being “different,” so forming an identity within a judgemental and violent community proves to be mentally exhausting. Moonlight (2016) by renowned director Barry Jenkins, vividly depicts three different stages of the life of a boy named Chiron while he transforms from a young boy to a man who struggles with coping to find who he truly is. Living in a poor crime-ridden neighborhood in Miami, Florida, Chiron goes through many trials and tribulations throughout his life to find who he is in a society that gives no mercy to anyone in it. Throughout this story, Chiron battles with forming an identity for himself as he comes to terms with being a homosexual black male who is trying to conceal the utmost fragility of who he really is. Through clever techniques used within the diegesis and mise-en-scene, Moonlight illustrates the difficulties a low-class homosexual African American man must experience throughout his life to be accepted into society as a result of not always conforming to ideas surrounding gender and race.

In the film Moonlight, Mahershala Ali plays a drug dealer who acts as a father figure to a homosexual, African American boy. Ali is not an A-list actor, but his talent as an actor is widely recognized and acknowledged. Although he cannot be considered a star, he can be classified as an actor because he is professionally trained and has indisputable talent. He is known to play very tough and intimidating characters who are not to be trifled with. Ali’s acting style can be classified as representational because his gestures and expressions come so naturally, as if he could easily relate to the characters that he plays. In some of his past roles, Ali has played the parts of a soldier and a crime lord, which shows how he usually plays gritty and fearless characters. In many of these roles, Ali’s character is not very talkative, but he is well respected and his words hold a great deal of weight. People who have seen some of Ali’s other films and television shows would expect nothing less than a bold and uncompromising performance. Ali’s performance in Moonlight does not disappoint because he embraces his reputation as an actor that plays characters with a quiet, yet heavy presence. He also draws upon his experiences in previous roles to exceed the high expectations set for him.

This film highlights the flaws of humanity in a western world. The films ability to touch on topics of classism, prostitution, and alcoholism makes the content mature and unlike typical western films.
