Throughout the year, I have learned a variety of writing skills that I have been able to apply to my essays. I have attained skills that have helped me write better argumentative essays, creative essays, and narrative essays. I have also overcome many of weaknesses this year, but I still have weaknesses that I need to work on in the 10th Grade. This year I have been able to strengthen many aspects of my writing. As time has passed by, I have learned many skills about writing argumentative essays. Some of the skills that I hadn't known before, include that ability to correctly order my arguments based on their order in my introduction, relating my arguments to my thesis at the end of each body paragraph, and using the correct evidence to support
All throughout my years of schooling, I’ve had just about, one paper that was about one page long, due every year. My papers never had to be more than one page in length. Therefore, I did not have to do much writing or do many essays. Surely not enough to remember any of the assignments. Writing has never been something I enjoyed doing, so I never bothered to many any memories of my writing experiences. I did not think it was necessary to remember any of them since I only had to do them to get a grade. The only writing experience I remember was the first assignment I had in this English 100 class about a writing experience. All week long, I sat there thinking about what to write about, but nothing came to mind as a topic. Then, one thing came to mind, but it was so very vague, I could not write the length that was needed for the assignment. I could only think of a few sentences to write for it. After sitting for a few moments longer, I thought, how about I write about how difficult it was for me to write this essay before it was due.

My writing skills have fluctuated throughout the semester. I feel, although, I have mastered leads and headline writing. Leads and headlines were the first writing skills we practiced and have continued to practice throughout the entire semester. The continuous practice of leads and headline writing throughout the semester, I feel confident in my ability to write concise, eye-catching leads and headlines. For writing assignment three I needed to provide a follow-up headline and corresponding lead for a criminal case. The headline had to focus on the upcoming sentencing hearing because it was the newest information about the case. In order to do so, as I mention in my blog entry, I had to write several drafts for both my headline and lead. [INSERT BLOG PICTURE] After many drafts of the lead I settled on a summary-lead because the article was a follow-up story about an established criminal case. I wrote the headline after I wrote the lead because the headline had to be a shorter, more intriguing version of the lead. After many drafts I finally wrote a six worded, eye-catching headline that was about the sentencing hearing. [INSERT WRITING ASSIGNMENT
I am able to use evidence to back up my ideas and prove my point. My writing this year has helped me grow in this area. I have learned about the different types of claims, like claim of value, fact, and policy, and different methods of arguing, like induction and deduction. I have used all of these techniques throughout my writing. When I am struggling with a prompt, like for my quotation essay, I look at it like an argument. This helps me make my purpose clear. A good example of my strength of argumentation is my paper on why schools should not have letter grades. In this essay, I used points and evidence to argue my claim. I also used a deductive method, meaning that I started with an observation and worked my way to a conclusion. This allowed me to effectively argue my claim and use evidence to support it. I know that I am good at writing an argumentative piece and I believe that it is my biggest
The supporting sentences appeared scattered, which basically proved that I had coherence problems in my essay. I would even have my evidence before my claim in some instances! When my classmate--Connor-- read my essay, he was puzzled with what I was doing with my sentences. For instance, in my compare/contrast paper, I tried to prove two claims at once, which was a terrible idea since the reader couldn’t identify what evidence referenced what claim. Basically, it was a disaster! There was no clear focus of what I was trying to write. In fact, it also ruined the purpose of the compare/contrast paper. To clarify, my failure to correlate the claim and evidence efficiently made the compare/contrast paper appear as content-based rather than identifying the similarities and differences between the writing styles of the authors. Despite originally messing up, I did notice an improvement when I concentrated singling out my claims and attaching evidence one by one with each respective claim. My synthesis essay; for example, effectively structured each claim with strong pieces of evidence that detailed on how mandatory volunteering is deteriorating high schooler’s admission chances to college. Afterward, I would use a transition word such as “additionally” or “furthermore” to mention my second claim and then support it with evidence. Thus, organizing my claim and evidence structure fundamentally created a smooth flow of my consciousness, which enabled my readers to understand what I was attempting to prove in my
Reflective writing is evidence of reflective thinking, which is a beneficial learning tool as it allows me to critically think about my personal employability skills. This self-reflection mode of writing allows me to recognise and identify my current skills, strengths, weaknesses, progress and achievements.
I always thought that my writing skills were pretty good until I started this class. It has been thirteen years since I graduated high school and I quickly realized that I had a lot of “refreshing” to do as far as writing papers. I actually felt very discouraged when I took the grammar test and did not score very well. I knew that I had to dedicate myself and put a lot of effort into this class to really improve. The practice quizzes were a major help to refresh on everything I must have forgotten since high school. Being able to write a quality paper is a skill that everyone should master. Writing is such a major part of communication in this day and age so being able to write an intelligent paper will benefit you not just through school but also through life. This year in Honors Freshman Literature and Composition, I have grown tremendously as a writer. My essays from the beginning of the year to the end have showed that I have greatly progressed in many skills that I have worked on. While I have acquired strengths this year, I also have weaknesses that I hope to improve next year in my writing.
America is a place full of immigrants with no single ethnicity or race. America can also be referred to as the ?Melting Pot? because it consists ingredients of multicultural backgrounds. There are cultures such as French American, Asian American, Italian American and African American. I am Mexican American. My culture has helped me to become the writer I am today. My bicultural background and constant moving back and forth from Mexico to America has both influenced and weakened my writing. This fall semester in ESL 91has been pretty interesting, and so far successful. The main object of this semester was to improve our essay writing. We were taught various lab techniques that helped us to improve our English writing skills, such as using appropriate verb tense and how to write a research paper with a works cited. Through my work on the research paper I have learned how to write in an academic style, how to find appropriate sources from an academic database, and how to cite my sources. Most of all, I can say that my reading skills have improved because the research for our papers required me to do a lot of critical reading.
As a writer, I feel that my weakness is struggling with time management and trying to get my best draft as my first draft. I have always struggled with trying to put forth the best draft on the first one and just making little adjustments and then turning the paper in. Another weakness I have is to over complicate my writing and over think submitting the final draft. Every single essay that I have had to write throughout this semester I have struggled with these problems. Particularly the research paper, since the paper was worth such a big percentage of the grade in the class. I was extremely self-conscious about submitting and writing the paper. I took a long time just to finish a rough draft. I reviewed the final draft for hours before submitting the paper. I also experienced the problem of being extremely self-conscious after I submitted the paper and question everything I choose to write on.
My writing skills which I have worked on over the few months I have been in English 102 have changed quite a bit in my opinion. There are many things which I have improved upon that were amongst my weaker writing skills when the year began. On the opposite side of that point, there are also many things which I still need to improve upon if I want to truly elevate my writing to a level that I will be confident in. Finally, I have gained new skills outside of writing from this class, particularly the activities which we did in class at various points throughout the year. These things all cumulate together to give me an appreciation of English courses which I did not previously have.
Past three weeks of July in summer school, I have tried my best to improve my skills and have seen my weak spots as it was coming, while writing my assignments. At the beginning of this course, I was struggling in many components that needed improvement in descriptive writing, summarizing, reading comprehension, and that resulted not succeed 2 tries of the grade 10 literacy test. Along the way of this course, I have seen a pattern where I see myself improving. After three weeks of this course has allowed me to have opportunities to improve myself in various aspects of my writing, reading, and in those aspects, I have seen my weakness that had to be fixed. Currently, I have the ability to have more confidence in various components of my writing and reading.
My writing skills are decent, if I take the time to fully process my thoughts. When it is a timed assignment or test, my skills go right out the window, I concentrate more on answering the prompt rather than the grammar, punctuation, or structure. It’s like a jumbled mess of writing filled with lots of errors. When I’m writing my main goals are to answer the prompt, have good structure, and no grammatical or punctuation errors. These goals sometimes get in the way of me expressing myself freely; if a sentence doesn’t flow right with rest of the paragraph, I will re-examine my paragraph or paper to see if I can conjure up a sentence to finish out my paragraph before moving on to the next paragraph. Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
