Working in a setting with scientific applications whilst providing quality care to patients is something I feel very passionate about. As a podiatrist I will be providing preventative care and advice to patients by explaining the importance of healthy feet. I would do this through health education which would include motivating individuals and community groups by showing them the outcomes if they neglect to maintain good feet and nail care.
Gaining work experience in a hospital setting and a private practice made me understand how important it is for medical practitioners to keep a strong relationship with their patients. As foot health can be a personal matter for patients, they must feel comfortable when talking about the subject. Observing a therapist allowed me to see how advice, shown as a demonstration or verbal guidance, should be given to patients. Getting accepted on an outreach programme for two years at a university was a great achievement for me. It helped me build on my knowledge by learning the key skills required to work in a scientific environment with patient contact. I also had the opportunity to help carry out assessments and formulate treatment plans for patients which allowed me to interact with them.

I would later find out that his box was called and isolate, a special bed for premature babies. His eyes were covered with gauze, he had a tube in his nose that was assisting his breathing, and he was so small. Awestruck, I watched his slight movements. His mouth moved as if he was searching for something. His tiny hands grasped for something to hold on to. I slowly reached my finger to his hand and he clutched it with all of his little might. His grasp sent shock waves of love through my body that I had never experienced in my life. I was a mother.

So as you might see, the common question 'Where are you from?' takes a little longer for me to answer as do other Somali refugees around the world and am glad to finally find a place I can truly call home.

Effective communication in the healthcare setting improves recovery rates and reduces pain and complication rates. (Wilkinson et al, 2003). Many complaints to the NHS are attributed to poor communication. Effective communication is reliant on the nurse working in partnership with the patient. It is essential that the nurse establishes a rapport and most of this will be achieved through the use of facial expressions. In my practice, it is important that develop a therapeutic relationship with the patients so that they can be able to put their trust in me. The therapeutic relationship is solely to meet the needs of the patient. In this relationship, there is a rapport established from a sense of mutual understanding and trust. To build a good nurse-patient relationship, I would have to show qualities of empathy, caring, sincerity and trustworthiness. During practice, if I am approaching a patient and the patient looks anxious, I should approach with empathy.
The principal aim of my career has always been to serve the society and my inclination towards public health stems from the very same desire. I grew up in India which has a lot of socio-economic deficits affecting health of our population. My family has always focused on prioritizing education and instilled the sense of responsibility to give back to the society we live in. Studying Physiotherapy in the early years of my career helped me pursue the dream to be able to serve people. I went to Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in India for my graduation followed by eight months of internship in Army Hospital, India. This had given me the foundation of principles of therapeutic assessment and intervention. As I practiced further, I realized that a gap existed between the practice in my country and the ones with better developed healthcare systems and this motivated me to pursue MSc Physiotherapy in UK and gain some clinical experience.
