Growing up, my understanding of diversity came from watching television and reading books; from these sources, I deduced that diversity meant embracing people with a different skin color or culture from your own in order to realize that they are people just like everyone else. This narrow view of diversity came from the fact that I had little personal experience with diversity. I grew up in a small town, and everyone in my school was either Native American or white. There didn’t appear to be any discrimination based on this difference; any adversity that anyone faced was based on personality differences or family feuds. That all changed when I started college.
In college, I met people from all walks of life; students there came from all around the world and had many differentiating attributes. The attribute that has changed my understanding of diversity the most is ability level,

While we were at the bowling alley, something happened that I will never forget. Matt had come up behind a fellow student and placed his hand on her shoulder while she was in a conversation to let her know he wanted by. She jumped and said to me, “I wish he wouldn’t do that. I didn’t even know he was behind me.” I had laughed and told her, “Now you know how he feels every day of his life.” What she said next changed my understanding of diversity.
She said, “I already did. I’m hard of hearing and can’t hear people unless they are right in front of me.” Immediately, I apologized and told her I hadn’t realized. She looks the same as everyone else and she has no deaf accent, so I hadn’t realized that she was hard of hearing. It made me realize that even people without the apparent markers of diversity face discrimination.

The experience that I encountered with Tim Wise’s lecture will stick with me forever. Before this lecture I didn’t have any idea about how big of a problem diversity is and how people face it everyday. The example that he gave should me real life experiences that people face and made me open up my horizons on how diversity is experienced differently for everyone.
As a white male, raised in a middle class, rural family, I am not diverse at all. For most of my life, I even failed to see the importance of diversity. The majority of my high school looked the same, acted the same, and thought the same way. When I found out that my brother is gay, my perspective on diversity completely transformed. As I learned of his struggles, from being harassed at work to feeling that he had to pretend to be somebody else while at school, I realized diversifying is much more than something companies did to boost their public reputation. Diversity is an essential part of life because without it we wouldn't be able to collaboratively take down issues. At least within my experience professionally, academically and through volunteering I have seen various accounts where people from all different backgrounds come together to accomplish amazing feats. All of these accounts have impacted me and expanded my perception of the world and most importantly in a positive way. Currently I experience diversity on a daily basis while working at CU Boulder, as I have been given the opportunity to lead a team of 15 individuals that range in age and also cultural backgrounds. With my team being a majority of Laotian and Spanish speaking individuals every day I pick up on different insights on how to approach them which I feel this better

Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.
Diversity is about recognising, valuing and taking account of people's different backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experiences, and encouraging and using those differences to create a productive and effective educational community and workforce.

First, when speaking of diversity many people tend to refer the word to race, so the definition of race and it’s explanation should be known, (McNamara, Burns) explains that race has voluminous meanings, confusing many people in the real use of the expression. The biological definition would explain that it’s genetically alignment with distinctive gene frequencies with hereditary characteristics. The simple answer, we can see the differences between people of different races (McNamara & Burns, 2009). Seems like such a simple definition for such a complex problem within our society within the world today.
