In my academic life, my bad social skills may be a hindrance in my ability to be successful in college. This is because my problem has interfered with my course work since it forces me to not ask for help and get nervous in social situations. Also, this affects my ability to accomplish goals. These problems are shown by the results of my Smarter Measure, which shows a low score in my social abilities and by personal experiences. First off, based off of my Smarter Measure report, I state “…do not get help when I am stuck” (Cornelius 1), and “…prefer to work alone” (Cornelius 1). This shows that whenever I have had a social assignment or presentation, my social problem causes me to fail many of the social aspects of the work, especially in presentations.
John does not socialize with his classmates but he will communicate academically with one student. The seating arrangement was modified to allow these two students to sit adjacent to each other. These changes could foster social communication for John.
The 1st Factor is Extraversion (AKA Surgency) and the score I received for this factor is 31 which is above average. With the score I got, it says that I am peppy and that I need or want to talk and hang out with people. Although part of the report is true about being peppy, I do not see myself as always needing others around because most of the time, I like being by myself. I do not agree with the score I got because I actually do not like people that well. I am a rude person that judges people easily. For example, if I were to meet someone new in a class, the first thing I will do is recognize a feature that is very noticeable and I will not say anything about it. Also, if mistakes were made constantly, it would be really obvious and it would bother me a lot even though I would not say anything about it out loud. But I will say what I think is wrong or bad about the person to someone else, even though I know that sounds really messed up and it is.
“Social skills are particularly important in team settings because working in teams increases the interdependence among workers, typically producing greater conflict, workload sharing, and coordination demands than work that is performed independently...”
It was not until freshman year in college that I realized how problematic my shyness and introversion had become. At Monmouth University, I was fortunate enough to be accepted in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program along with 39 other students. As a part of this program, I attended a five-week seminar during the summer. Not only was I receiving six credits, but I was also engaging in activities to sharpen my leadership and social skills. After the
The results of my Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire were a coordinate pair of (6, 7), which placed me in the sector of the circle attributed to a gamma alpha persona. This means that my social dexterity score is 7 and my non‐cognitive self‐management personae score is 6. The quadrant and sector describes people with well‐ developed social dexterity and non‐cognitive self‐management skills. Feeling confident in my ability to employ emotional and social intelligence, I can best leverage my limited time to develop stronger
Overall I used to be a hesitant individual, because I didn’t know that many people. So I always had a quiet personality which made me anti-social at times. I used to try to do everything on my own, because before I had friends to assist me. Having friends increased my rate of productivity, and I began to believe in myself more. I know not to
For the reflection assignment, I choose to do the Smarter Measure test. From this test, I learned that I am a social learner. Some of my weakness are in typing, reading and reading recall. Some of my strengths are Technical Competency, Technical Knowledge, Life Factors, and Individual attributes.
also engage in more negative rumination than others, with the best predictors of rumination being social anxiety symptom severity and self-appraisals of performance. (Maree 2004,p143)
Social competencies opportunities need to be provided for group interaction, socialization with guest and friends so that the child learns to accept his strengths and weakness.
As a neurologically different individual with Asperger’s, I have some road hazards that affect my ability to socialize which could hamper my success in college. The hazard that I will be writing about is my tendency to take constructive feedback rather personally. I have also cultivated some strategies that I use on a daily basis to try to make this less of an issue.
There are several goals that we have for Joel to improve on his social skills. One objective that we have for Joel is to reduce passive aggressive behaviors toward others. This would include specific examples such as rolling his eyes when a student says a wrong answer as this may lead to further ostracism and increased likelihood of being bullied. Furthermore, another social orientated objective relates to him being less withdrawn and shy. By taking chances and making himself more vulnerable, is will allow him to be less tense with his peers. This in turn, will result in more socializing between Joel and his peers.
Students in the classroom come from a variety of backgrounds. Their lives are shaped by their families, their communities, but also their peers in school whom they will spend hours a day with throughout their educational career. The ability to form relationships with others, to create lasting friendships that grow and evolve with time, is detrimental to all children and their development. Lacking the ability to do so, whether it is directly because of their conditions or because of how other students perceive them, can dramatically harm them emotionally and mentally.
Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) can be described as an extreme, persistent fear of being scrutinized or judged by others in social situations. This fear may lead to feelings of embarrassment, humiliation and self-consciousness. People who suffer from this condition may “feel powerless against their anxiety” (ADAA). These emotions often interfere with daily activities, such as school, work and personal relationships. The person might begin to withdraw socially or avoid situations in which he or she is afraid. Millions of Americans endure this devastating condition every day of their lives. There are several causes, symptoms and treatments.
Socializing influences academic performance. If a student is timid, he will not voice an opinion in class. Timid students prevent themselves from expressing their ideas. Socializing further involves how open a student’s mind is toward many controversial topics. For example, the student who communicates easily with diverse individuals will be more open to understanding other cultures.
(Fisher, 2007). Social settings and educational settings, professional settings and home settings can all be very different environments and different behaviors can be exhibited in each environment. An individual is most likely to interact differently in a social setting of close friends than they would in a professional setting of
