My QRTP Paper As Earl Campbell has said “I Try to get them to remember that they’re not just athletes, but student athletes”. This quote is relevant because it tells how being a student is just as important as being just an athlete. Most people agree with being a student more than an athlete and having a good GPA because it makes athletes worry and work harder towards their GPA. First of all if they have to keep a certain GPA it will make the student athlete maintain their good grades to stay in sports. Secondly it will show how hard the student wants to work in the class to stay on the playing field. Lastly it is better to hold students who represent a University to high standards to prove how well they can do on and off the …show more content…
If the student athlete can't manage to keep their GPA up in high school then colleges won't accept them into the school to play for their University. The student's GPA can decide whether they can do what they want in life after school. Student athletes who can't keep their GPA show how they don't wanna work in the class which results in not playing in a sport.
The second reason is that it will show how hard and committed the student athlete is to keeping good grades. The student should wanna work harder in the classroom to represent the school by playing on the sports team.. The student athlete should keep their GPA up to show that they wanna play sports and are dedicated to not only their education but also sports. They should also prove to people how dedicated they are to the team by having a good GPA. The last reason is that it is better to hold students athletes to higher standards to prove how hard they will work in class to play for a sports team. They should wanna represent their sports team and school by being able to well in the class but on the team as well. The student athlete should feel honored to be playing on a sports team and a way to show thanks is by keeping the required GPA. Students athletes that can keep a good GPA in a high University have more options in life after college because a good GPA can go
Allowing a kid or teenager to play football gives them motivation to succeed in life, because they will do anything they can to keep their grades up to play. Although we give students a minimum GPA of 2.0, it would be more beneficial to the students
Although extracurricular activities are required for colleges, GPA also plays an important role. Once students begin college, there is a need to maintain good grades and most students choose to go to work to earn money. Sports can become a distraction to students. Being on the honor roll while playing a sport at the same time will prove that you can be committed to two things at once. To play in games, athletes should have to be on the honor roll.
Other colleges will take a lower grade point average but none of them will go below a 2.5gpa. Colleges also look at high school kids ACT’s that they take to see how well they place on them. So Academic Excellence in football is a must have for each player and thus gets rid of the old day dumb jock idea that was widely popular in the earlier years of football. “Each year, the NCAA publicly announces the Graduation Success Rate of all Division I institutions, along with a similar Division II Academic Success Rate. According to the most recent Graduation Success Rate data, 82 percent of Division I freshmen scholarship student-athletes who entered college in 2004 graduated. The graduation-rate data are based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education.” (Graduation Success Rate) For many kids a scholarship is the only way they have to be able to attend college either because their parents don’t have the money for it or else the college they are wanting is so high in tuition fees etc. that they just can’t afford it especially if it’s an out of state college. In state colleges normally run no more than about seven thousand dollars a year depending on where the individual lives. Out of state colleges can charge a student up to twenty-five thousand dollars a
Student athletes need to maintain a good gpa to do good after graduation. Getting better grades will help you get into a better college. Getting better grades will help you get into a higher quality college, and also help you do better in college. Getting into a better college helps you become
These students are given more than what is necessary to compete and perform at a high level. College again is a platform for higher education in preparation for the professional, and real world. A lot of athletes are aware that they may not even make it to the professional level. College is meant for an academic education first, then the privilege to play a sport or get involved second. For this reason along with many others are reasons why college athletes should focus on their respective sport and not about the source of
Colleges frequently refer to a student's GPA when they apply, since it can provide a nice summary of them academically. Gym is not a purely academic class, however. It is difficult to improve a Gym grade by studying a worksheet or taking better notes. Colleges, therefore, are examining athletic achievements along with academic ones, which is unfair. It is unrealistic to think it matters that “the debate team captain cannot get a home run. It should not be a huge deal that the valedictorian cannot swim.”(Hakimian and Kim 1). A GPA can be the only way you are accepted into a college for some people, or even the only chance you have at a scholarship. Two people could have the exact same grades in every class except Gym, giving one a slightly higher GPA, making them more likely to receive a academic scholarship than the other. The higher GPA is not a result of better academic ability, but athletic ability, which should not be considered for a scholarship based on your academics. GPA starts to be influenced by athletic ability when you include Gym, and for those who are not, it is shutting down windows of freedom for
One of the main pressures these athletes face is academics. College athletes’ level of stress is extreme. They have to face double challenges everyday. Aside from having to perform well in their sport, they have to keep a decent grade point average (GPA). Although their classes might be less demanding, college athletes are recommended to choose an easier major so it’ll be manageable for them to balance out sports and school (Eitzen, page 56). Regardless of their majors not being
Academic success is important for both high school and college athletes. To be eligible to participate, athletes must maintain a certain GPA. Student athletes that don’t make school a priority, not only miss out on playing time, but also fail to prepare themselves for the next step in their life. For high school athletes, that means prepare for college while for college athlete, it means preparing to enter the workforce. Although, both high school and
Why High School Students Should Have To Keep A GPA Grandhi once said “The future depends on what we do in the present”. Student athletes should have to keep a certain GPA to participate in sports because school is mandatory and sports are something that they decide to do. Having good grades will help to get into a good college, plus people earn more academic scholarships than athletic scholarships every year. Lastly student athletes should be compelled to keep their GPA up because if they do not succeed at playing sports at a higher level they will need to know the basic high school education to land them through college and to get a good job.
They need to make sure that they give enough attention to sports as well as academics, they also need to work hard to manage their time to be able to do both. In addition, student- athletes need to be dedicated to do both because they are held to a higher standard to where they are expected to be able to be both. In other words, schools should have athletes with a 2.5 GPA or higher to be able to play because it shows they want to play and they are willing to make the effort to keep up their
Students should not be able to play sports with a low GPA. Students should have good grades to play sports, because it is not fair to other students who play sports and keep their grades up. You can not get into college just for sports. You need to have a high GPA too. Other people need sports to help them get good grades. Student athletes should have to maintain a certain grade point average to participate in sports because it helps them develop life skills, gives them a future, and helps them with their confidence.
Do student athletes make the most of their opportunity to obtain a post-secondary education? Do they have the same academic success as those students that are not athletes? Are student athletes just “dumb jocks?” The answers to these questions might surprise you. Much research has been done to dispel the myth that athletes going to college are only there to play sports with little regard to their education. Programs have been created to assure that colleges and universities hold athletes to the same standards as the everyday student. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has decided that the “magic number” to put the “student” back into “student-athlete” is 925 (Hamilton).
Many high schools and teachers don’t realize the damage they can do to these athletes if they do give them those couple extra points to play. According to a website, “Any student should have good grades to play sports. Even if you are a great athlete, you will probably not get a full-athletic scholarship. Having good grades can lessen your stress about affording college” ( psychologytoday.com ). In this case, what teachers don’t know is not only are they making that athlete happy to play, but at the same time you are hurting that person for future references, when later in their future college sees the kind of grades that athlete is getting he may not be the kind of fit for whichever school that may be. Overall any student that has failed a class and is not able to play that athlete shouldn’t be able to play at all. If an athlete is not able to be responsible to keep his grades up what makes a coach think that he can be
When participation in a sport in high school, it may interfere with class work, meaning an athlete may have to leave class early in order to participate in a game or tournament. With doing so, it is up to the student to get their work done. They have to make it up on their own time in order to make up what they missed in class. This teaches students time management and motivates students to try their best in order to make up work they missed. All coaches should take into consideration that if a student does not have the grades, then the athlete may not participate in competition or practice. Even this rule applies to the team’s best athlete, grade ineligibility applies to everyone. When it comes to high school, the sport itself generates motivation to keep the student on top of things and wanting to thrive for greatness in academics and athletics as well (“Merkel,”). All students should know that grades come before athletics. This will make student athletes aware of the minimum GPA that will be needed to be maintained in order to participate in athletics (“The Benefits of Participating in Sports”). Consequently, it forces students to learn
Despite the many stereotypes that are connected with being a student athlete, student athletes in general are held to much higher standards by their institutions. Before a prospective student athlete even enters college, they are made fully aware of the academic standings and requirements of the college they choose. Although the academic requirements vary from college to college, the standards are still held high for all student athletes. The transition into college can be exceptionally difficult especially for the
