My Footprint: My Personal Impact On Biodiversity

The ecological calculator works by measuring the amount of biologically productive land and water an individual uses to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb the waste it generates (Earth Day Network, 2017). And according to my ecological footprint, we would need 3.5 Plant Earth’s and 15.7 global acres of Earths productive area to provide enough resources to maintain my current lifestyle.
According to the results, a majority of my footprint comes from services, which is a societal footprint, not personal. However, for my personal footprint, approximately 18% is due to my choice of food, 10% for goods, 9% for shelter and 7% for mobility.
The services section includes many societal aspects, such as healthcare, education and financial services, which are all necessities. We can try to limit the amount of service we buy, however, another option is to buy smarter. All of these services require the use of resources and energy to function, therefore, we can reduce our share by selecting businesses that are environmentally responsible (Shrink That Footprint, n.d.). …show more content…

First, agricultural processes are linked to habitat loss, water shortages, soil erosion, intensive agriculture, pollution, and is also responsible for a loss in genetic biodiversity. This is a direct result of management methods, and the unsustainable use of resources, such as land and water.
