There is so much I take for granted: I was born to a family that was always able to provide me with what I needed, was supported by love, and had financial security. In general, I grew up without knowing true hardship. I only realized this entering high school where I encountered my first real experience with diversity. Having left all my middle school friends (who went to a different high school) I was fresh in the market for some new companions. After filtering through a few my new classmates I found someone with the same love for classical guitar and shows with way-too-smart main characters (like Psych). I was appalled when her dad came to pick her up after school in a frail and beaten down pickup truck. It was equally strange to see
Diversity does not simply refer to race or even culture; it’s everywhere. We are all diverse, meaning we are all different from one another. The book The Other Wes Moore we see two kids with the same name, but very different lives that they live. Wes and Wes are similar in ways, but in the end turn out nothing like each other. One chose to lead his life in a better path, while the other sticks with a path that ultimately destructs his life. In this paper, I will discuss what diversity means to me, messages that I learned about various minorities or majorities when I was a child, if my views have changed, when diversity influenced my life, and the situation when it influenced me. Some other things that I will discuss also are the main characters of the book, examples of diversity involving the main characters, and which character I related with the most in this book.
The articles “ Can Diversity Destroy Us?” and “A.D.2041: End of White America?” are written by Patrick J. Buchanan who is author and also the former assistant to the president for communications. These articles primarily talk about the idea of diversity in the Unites State and why Buchanan thought it could destroy America and why it is bad. On the other hand, in the article, “Model of America Ethnic Relation: a Historical Prospective”, Fredrickson discusses the ethnic between races and religions through out the American history. He has listed four models of ethnic relations. The first model he explains is ethnic hierarchy. The idea of this model is to deal with dominant group that claims to conceive themselves as a higher social class and claim
According to the text, diversity audits should be conduct by a selected department or a third party company. The reason why selected department or third party should conduct diversity audits is because it is important to secure the information. If the information that was collected during a diversity audit was made available to everyone , this can put the organization or company at risk of a discrimination lawsuit. Another reason why it is important to appointed department or third party company is that the company is protect by attorney and client clause.
walk out their home. Does America cherish its diversity? We were shown two arguments that
In Chapter 7, page 181, it tells the reader to develop sensitivity towards diversity. I've had some instances of this during school and have seen it often times in a negative way. Group projects were assigned and pairing was needed to happen. I decided to pair up with somebody of a different culture based on the project. The person had came from India last year and I was very intrigued by the stories he had to tell during his time there. I've seen people take sensitivity of diversity in negative ways by often times being closest to people of the same background and ethnicity as each other. Without ever learning of different culture and ways, racial stereotypes are made out of plain
“92 BLX The Beat of The Bay. This is DJ Rodsky” boomed the radio into my preschool classroom at St. Mary Catholic School. My best friend Emani's dad was featured on the radio that morning, and my teacher let the whole class tune in. While in may seem like an odd occurrence to listen to a rap station in a preschool setting, it highlights the attitude towards diversity that shaped my formative education. Instead of the hand-picked, curated diversity that sometimes plagues schools, this encounter demonstrates the raw, unalderterated diversity that kindles appreciation for all races, genders, backgrounds, or affiliations without any reservations.
Diversity is good. From my point of view, it's one of the ideals that makes America such a Unique democracy. Before you read this post I am encouraging you guys to toss your political bias aside and actually dig deep.
Growing up in a rural, small town, in the southern United States, I have had limited exposure to diversity. My graduating class is primarily made up of white students, from middle class backgrounds. The people of Tarboro, North Carolina are all from here, their families dating back generations. Everyone knows everyone, and anyone new is often considered an outsider of sorts, and therefore, any new ideas are usually shunned. Limited exposure to new things and the frequent rejection of anything other than ordinary led to a very sheltered life. To attend school in New York City, one of the most diverse cities in the world, would be quite a step out of what I have always known. At Columbia, everyday I would be exposed to new and interesting backgrounds,
Our assignment, Diversity Awareness, was to take the self-assessment on page 55 of our textbook, calculate our scores, and then read the definition of our score provided in the book. The purpose of this self-assessment was to gain insight on our personal views about diversity. By gaining insight to our personal views we will hopefully be able to identify our weaknesses, take the necessary corrective actions, and become more culturally competent people. According to our textbook my score of 32 means I have a "high diversity awareness and I am comfortable with many different types of people and in many types of situations" . (Phillips|Gulley, pg. 55)
“Ethnic Diversity adds richness to a society.”-Gary Locke. Diversity is essential to our national identity, and diversity does create unity. Diversity today and in the past have always been a huge affect and part of society. Different races, sexes, and religious beliefs for some reason affect many people.
Diversity is a term that can have many different meanings depending on context. According to the American Psychological Association from 2013, Hispanics only account for 5% of active psychologists. Being Colombian – American, I fit into this category and fall into the systematic measure of diversity. As I check off the Hispanic/Latina box pertaining to diversity, I realize there is one box I can’t check off, one aspect of my life that adds to my diversity.
Diversity management is not just a soft skill dealing with the moral refinements of fairness. It is not an affirmative action programme with crazy quotas; rather it means new markets, new customers, new users of your products and services.
This case study shows the issues relating to workplace diversity and how hiring plays into that role. Hiring is the only way a workforce can improve its diversity, but sometimes means selecting candidates who do not have the most experience or necessary skills. This case study showed just that. This case study showed how a workforce working to bring in new ideas found itself caught between multiple candidates who all brought something to the table.
I think that having a diverse group of people that you can be friends with or talk to uis a good thing to have because it give you a lot of different perspective and it will also help you learn about all the different types of people that are in the world.
Impact of diversity dimensions. Although the focus remains on the individual, the counselor must be aware of the power and the privileges that they have or perceived to have by the client. As a counselor, one is put in a position of power from the beginning of every session. The counselor subsists in the chair of privilege and power as they explain the therapy norms, tender compensation, and dictate therapy time limits. If the counselor is also in a stance of power and privilege in society also, it is especially imperative that the counselor brings up matters of diversity in session in order for the client to be able to be honest, explore their beliefs, and find their meaning.
