Self-Assessment, Page 55 - Diversity Awareness Our assignment, Diversity Awareness, was to take the self-assessment on page 55 of our textbook, calculate our scores, and then read the definition of our score provided in the book. The purpose of this self-assessment was to gain insight on our personal views about diversity. By gaining insight to our personal views we will hopefully be able to identify our weaknesses, take the necessary corrective actions, and become more culturally competent people. According to our textbook my score of 32 means I have a "high diversity awareness and I am comfortable with many different types of people and in many types of situations" . (Phillips|Gulley, pg. 55) I agree with this assessment only to the point that I would hope I am like this. I don't feel I have had enough exposure to other cultures to really determine my diversity awareness. I certainly hope I am a highly diverse person who is comfortable around many different types of people in many different types of situations, but because I have had limited exposure with …show more content…
A lot of these questions just come down to showing respect for others and paying attention to how people react to situations. I don't think it's right for anyone to made fun of, talked down to, or disrespected. My mother says I am a defender of those that won't or don't speak up for themselves. But I don't see it this way, I just see it as right or wrong and I believe it is wrong to treat others with anything less than respect, regardless of where they are from. When people are treated with respect they know it and they understand when and if you mistakenly do something stupid. It is harder for them to understand a mistake when they are not being treated with respect in the first place. Yes I agree, it would be better not to make a mistake in the first place, but this is not always possible and a little respect goes a very long
To participate in the Diversity Project would be excellent experience to partake in research and gain knowledge on integrative approach towards the study of biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems. Through field work and laboratory training, I would be participating in laboratory research which will complement career development that will help with successfully applying to graduate school and choosing a career. With this experience it will enhance my academic goals by allowing me to get a firsthand experience in collaborating with other researchers and help them in their research. With this it will help in my academic goals because with this research I could use the experience as an internship class required for my major and possible use it for
The Cultural Diversity Self-Awareness Inventory we had to complete at the beginning of the semester, I feel, was necessary to know where we stood with our own self-awareness of cultural competence. On my Cultural Diversity Self-Assessment Inventory, I achieved an average score, but I feel that I could improve exponentially. Though I did see that I was self-aware when interacting with others and where I stood when it came to other types of diversity.
I believe that the perspective I have to offer this medical school is unique. From my Black uncles to my Arab aunts, I feel lucky to be able to call so many cultures my own. Furthermore, my experiences during college have been vital to my understanding of diversity. Veterans, the LGBTQ community, the disabled, and variation across the spectrum of political opinion or in body shape are but a sample of the diversity that I have witnessed. Diversity goes beyond race or religion and this has been made evident to me during my undergraduate career. Thus, I wish to bring my culturally competent outlook to the student body and look forward to gaining from the viewpoints of my peers as well. Exposure to a wide breadth of the human experience has helped
I moved to California around one year and a half ago with my family. My parents decided to move here to give their daughters a better education and better opportunities. My parents are my biggest influence because they have helped me understand how important it is to work hard to achieve my goals. I learned that if I work for what I want, I can be very successful. My parents left their own house, land, jobs, and family just to give their daughters a chance to be successful in life. I think that seeing them give everything away just so that my sister and I can study and get our degrees is incredible. They have not only shown me to be independent and a hard working person, but they have taught me how to be considerate and selfless. I lived in
I consider myself to be an involved advocate for diversity and difference both within and outside of my educational career. A significant part of why I desire to attend NC State is the institution's dedication to providing a comfortable environment for all cultures. Learning is a social community, bettered by gaining insight from those who think alike, but also differently from yourself. I believe my ability to learn from those with different backgrounds would only enhance my current and future studies. Having been involved in several clubs relative to diversity in high school and college, such as the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), I am confident that NC State will be the perfect environment to continue acting upon these principles of diversity
Nursing continues to strive towards excellence in delivering culturally competent healthcare. Through this journey of excellence, improvements can be made by continued education and awareness. Awareness of areas I need growth in builds on my existing knowledge and skills. In this paper, I will identify areas of weaknesses and strengths in my cultural competency skills as well as strategies that will improve my transcultural nursing care. I have identified these areas using the Cultural Diversity Self-Assessment. Achieving a total score of 104, this tool has allowed me to target my weaknesses and create a plan to increase my competence in those areas. I have also been able to identify my strengths in cultural competence.
Attachment, transition, and seperation has a lot to do with the five C's of Diversity Awareness. Different cultures have different meanings and how to handle attachment, transition, and separation. Attachment are the emotional bonds that infants develop with their parents and other key caregivers. These relationship are crucial for children's well-being and for their emotional and social development.Although atrachment relationships are universal, they are patterened by the culture in which they are formed ( van Ijzendoorn et al.,2007) .As a parent I believe infants/toddlers should be attach to their parents. This help the child to be safe and secure so when they get older they won't have trust issues. Attachment is very important when it
I went to the presentation of the Blackboard Jungle 9 Symposium on Thursday, March 31, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Dudley H. Davis Center. I wasn’t be there on time. When I got there, it was already full of people. I had to stand at the back of the room. At that moment, Nikki Khanna was presenting. She talked about what race are Indians. Also take two examples: The one drop rule & walter white, and Susie guillory Phipps. She wanted us to compare these two stuffs. I was shocked by the next true story that she told us.
Diversity’s real mean comprises traits and personal experiences that have one stand out as a unique piece among a thousand in a puzzle. Anglophones in Cameroon make up the minority who have remained medically underserved and economically disadvantaged because of government neglect. In an attempt to adapt and thrive in a country that offered limited options to English speakers like myself, I learned to read, write and speak French. My bilingualism has since aided me in the US as I tutored fellow students in French and even got employed. Under the supervision of a licensed translator, I sometimes acted as an interpreter at the MVA, but more frequently translated certificates, transcripts, licenses and other foreign documents into English documents
As I reflect over my life, I appreciate the many diverse experiences I’ve came to encounter. My experience with diversity dates back to birth. I am from a small rural town, Moss Point, MS. and notably the last state to abolish slavery. The town currently has a population of 13,704 people and consists of 73% Blacks or African Americans, 23% Caucasian, 1% Hispanic or Latino and 1% bi-racial.
According to Ely and Thomas , diversity perspective is use as tool to mediate the relationship between diversity and performance. Diversity perspectives serve as a guide for people’s efforts to create and respond to cultural diversity in work group. It also includes normative beliefs about the value of cultural identity at work. Diversity perspectives assist with the impact on cultural difference have on work. Ely and Thomas (1996) had identify three diversity perspectives which are discrimination and fairness which involved the recruitment and retention of employees from protected groups. Another diversity perspectives is access and legitimacy perspectives which challenges the notions to some degree. Organizations that adopt
Growing up I would support and volunteer at various different places: my school, libraries, hospitals, or big, well known organizations. Throughout life I have always agreed with the quote above, if someone is doing good and making a difference, why not be a part of it and help make a difference as well. When I was younger, I assumed that anyone who is saying that they are doing good must be doing good. I was never skeptical of organizations such as Autism Speaks. As I grew up, I heard from others that such organizations were not actually giving people who have Autism and their families funding and support, but in reality all Autism Speaks does is raise "awareness" and try to find a "cure". The so-called awareness they raise isn't the right
Welcome to my inside and outside world that carries an adventurous circle of diversity. I am a 38-year-old African American who finds herself looking for opportunities in every day’s life cycle. I find my personality as a diverse personality that cultivates within any group setting. Over the years, I have come to learn diversity is everyday lifestyles, whether it is faced on by grocery shopping, employment etc. I have learned there is no way around diversities and its settings; however, diversity is a direction of your reflection. We will explore the importance of diversity throughout this journey.
The questionnaire helps me to interpret my own understanding and awareness about the cultural diversity. My total score of cultural diversity awareness is 141. And the score is in the very high range.
I’ve always believed that life is about gaining as much knowledge as possible. Thanks to my parents I’ve always been extremely accepting of other cultures and customs. From trying new foods to learning different traditions. My main goal in life is to meet as many people as I can and learn about their part of the world. I know if I can bring nothing else to the community I’ll bring open mindedness and acceptance. The fact that one of the traits you all look for is the ability to benefit from and contribute to a culturally and intellectually diverse community is one of the reasons I choose to apply. A campus with diversity and acceptance is always a win in my book. Having clubs just for certain groups of students who share the same culture or
