My Effective Experience: My Teaching Experience At San Fernando School

I observed that the students were finding themselves hard to concentrate on the lesson plan and I believe there were couple of reasons why the lesson failed to captivate the interest of the students. One of the reason is because, the activity of watching a movie and answering couple questions lacked the critical thinking process. Also, the students had to watch the same story videos from different websites which just seemed meaningless. The materials were extremely repetitive. Throughout the lesson, students had hard time sitting still and seem to lack interest; their heads were on the desks. Hearing the word “teaching” makes me think about something great, such as dedication and contribution. In my opinion, teaching means sharing everything positive to others in order to develop those people, such as knowledge and moral values. Even conveying light advice and motivation can be counted as a worthy lesson. By teaching, the teacher also can obtain a lot of benefits. Firstly, teacher may obtain knowledge that she or he did not know before from the students. Secondly, teacher’s communication skill may be improved by doing intensive interaction with the students. Lastly, teacher may get many psychological values, such as patience, passion, joy, and satisfaction. Considering those benefits, I would like to take every opportunity to teach.

In the module for week two there were several ideas that you can implement in your classroom. For instance you could try the walk and talk discussion strategy. This strategy simply means that the students read a selected piece of literature and have a small-group discussion about teacher-created topics posted around the room. The resources/idea for this strategy includes identifying main ideas and develop 4-5 questions pertaining to the ideas. Afterword’s you type up questions to be printed out and placed around the room. You then should secure large sheets of butcher paper or whiteboard space for the students to write down the groups’ ideas, once this task is completed make sure you have supplied each group with dry erase or regular felt tip pens.

The teaching experience I had a Blackmon Road Middle School was a very good experience that was eye opening. The 7th graders of Dr. Latta-Won class were excellent, shy but a very interesting group of students to teach. With this experience I gained a plethora of knowledge. On November 17, 2016, I was the lead teacher who taught the lesson “The Reflection I Am”. After teaching the students a lot of things were observed and some good and bad things came out of the overall lesson. In this lesson there were some intended content and activities, the actual teaching experience was more different than I thought it would be, and the students work has led to a revision of the original lesson plan.

I have learned so much these past three months while student teaching at James A. Dever in Valley Stream, New York. My first placement was in a second-grade classroom. My second placement was in a fifth-grade inclusive classroom. Student teaching has given me the chance to get hands-on with the students and curriculum. As well, it has allowed me to observe how a teacher should or shouldn’t be like in a classroom. Student teaching has shown me so many examples of excellent teaching that you cannot learn from a textbook. It takes experience and a special type of teacher who is caring and warm and passionate about teaching and his or her students. I think the most significant learning that has resulted from my experience would be that it is important to be passionate about teaching and about education. I feel like there is a connotation that teaching is an easy task and that is why a lot of people become teachers. However, teaching is not easy at all. Being an educator is one of those professions where work does not just stay at work. Teachers constantly have to bring work home to grade or teachers lesson plan at home, unless they stay at school for multiple hours after to do all of these things. At first I did not even think about becoming a teacher as for me it seemed to be a lot of work. I’ve never seen myself as one, yet I still enrolled in this course. I really do like helping people and going to a school earlier in this year made me realise that I am in the right course, because simply by just standing in the class and explaining an activity and their reaction to understanding it, brought great pleasure and warmth to me. The teacher provided an excellent lesson plan and the lesson objectives were aligned with the Stand Out curriculum. It contain details to show the “what” and “how” of the lesson. The lesson objectives and activities were nicely paced and the teacher transitioned smoothly from one activity to another, “look at the vocabulary words and only check the ones that you can read and understand.”, “today we will look at few words.” The teacher used a variety of learning styles to differentiate instruction and enhance student learning. She used the plastic toy foods to talk about the different groups of food. The small group activity required teamwork from the students.

When teaching a lesson, the first core teaching strategy I use to achieve my results is to engage the students and/or relate it to my students. Students learn much more effectively when they are engaged and interested in the topic they are learning. By creating an activity that gets the students involved and interested they will learn the material more easily and have fun while doing it. I could also relate their lives and interests in my lessons. Students will pay more attention when the topic is related to their lives.

After self-evaluation, I feel that my most valuable assets as a potential teacher leader are handling conflict, listening, seeing the big picture, work ethic, and responsibility. I have always been a leader, therefore exhibiting these characteristics. In situations outside of school, I also find myself in leadership positions. For me to become a better potential teacher leader, I need to work on creativity and sensitivity. I have creativity but I’m always afraid to use it when it comes to lessons. I feel as although I can be more creative this coming school year, when I more towards middle school. Experience is something that I will get through teaching different subjects, grade-levels, and the years I teach.

Before taking becoming a teacher I had volunteered in my community at home. I was always helping at the care facility that my great grandfather was staying in. Although this was a different kind of service than I did for my ACE hours I was still making an impact on someone in my community. I would help with the senior citizens, serving them lunch, playing games, and interacting with them. They loved when me and my little brother would come to help because it wasn’t just like any other day, we would take them outside to see the birds or take them to the movie room to watch a movie and have popcorn. I feel like with my ACE hours I made an impact on the young children in the community because I went and helped out in a sixth-grade science classroom. I went on a regular class day and a “lab” day. On lab day I got to be very interactive with the students. I really liked that I chose this service for my ACE hours since I want to be a teacher, it gave me real insight of what a class day looks like from a teacher position not as the student. The students knew that I am a Sam Houston State university student and they were very interested to know what college was like and what I was going to be “when I grew up”. They wanted to talk to me the whole class period about it, so we spent a couple minutes talking and then got to work.

Am I a better teacher after working in the classrooms at BSES and KES? Absolutely. Before student this experience, my teaching strategies were limited to book knowledge and my experiences of teaching dance and theatre for the past five years. Working within the school setting, I learned the importance in being flexible. Each time I entered a school, I generally knew what age student I would be teaching, the progression of skill I planned to teach them, and how much time I had to complete my lesson plan. What I did not know was how many students I would be managing, if my students could speak English, what level of physical competency my students had mastered, or if I would be dealing with any physical or mental impairments. I learned to think quickly on my feet and to adapt to the class size; for instance, on my last day of teaching, I had prepared a lesson around using scoops, because I thought my students already knew how to use them. When I found out they did not know how to use them, I adapted, by changing from the games I had planned on teaching, to teaching the basics of handling the scoops and practicing over-hand and under-hand throws and catching with the scoops. The new skills were easy for some, yet hard for others; therefore, I adapted exercises to meet the needs of diverse students. For some, I simplified, and, for others, I made the tasks more difficult. Teaching is like a draft, each time you teach you can improve your teaching. This saying my sound silly, but walk into a classroom and teach a lesson and this saying will become very relevant. Many people overestimate how easy teaching can be. Teaching is more than simple worksheets and powerpoint that provide the information. Students have variety of needs and have a variety of learning styles and as teachers we need to make accommodations for each child. There are around twenty-four students and one teacher, these twenty-four students are all unique and different. As a future teacher, walking into a classroom I needed to think about my objectives, language, assessments, feedback, how successful and unsuccessful my lesson was, and what I can work on to become a more successful teacher. All of these thoughts are going about a lesson, which can be a ten minute lesson or a sixty minute lesson. Through this practicum experience my understanding about teaching and learning has deepened and has taught me so much about what I need to work on to become a more successful teacher. As teacher we expect our students to be always working to better themselves and as teachers we need to be leading by example, if anything the experience has deepened my intrinsic motivation for becoming a better teacher.
