Did the film reveal any form of RACISM or STEREOTYPING from any perspective? Please elaborate with details/examples (14.28 Possible Points). 100 word minimum between the two There definitely was major stereotyping involved in this film. Tula’s family displayed all the basic characteristics that are associated with the Greek culture. They showed that they are all about family, good food, and how they take pride in their culture. I did notice some prejudices in this movie as well. Tula’s family did not want Greeks dating anyone outside their race or culture, which made it difficult for her to carry on her relationship in the beginning. It was also hard for Ian’s family, who are Caucasian, understand the Greek culture as …show more content…
Since it was her goal was to break free from the stereotype, she shied away from the norm of what her culture entailed. There were certain instances where her upbringing did influence a lot of her thoughts and actions, but not enough to be categorized as truly fitting the mold. For example, her mother did not have an education and her sole purpose was to take care of family. She was also seen as inferior when it came to her husband. Tula, on the other hand, wanted an education, wanted to break free from the mold of being just another housewife. She wanted independence and the freedom to choose whomever she wanted to love. But she still had her Greek beliefs that her parents had instilled in her, such as attending Greek school, where she then passed it on to her daughter in the end. Little things like that made us understand that she did not truly turn her back on her

The adventures of the three main characters in the movie, Ulysses, Pete and Delmar include
Many people regard Homer’s epics as war stories—stories about men; those people often overlook the important roles that women play in the Odyssey. While there are not many female characters in the Odyssey, the few that there are, play pivotal roles in the story and one can gain a lot of insight by analyzing how those women are portrayed. Homer portrays the females in contradictory ways: the characters of Athena and Eurykleia are given strong, admirable roles while Melantho, the Sirens and Circe are depicted in a much more negative way. Penelope—the central female character—is given both negative and positive attributes.
The emotional reaction that the filmmakers intended for anyone who watch this film is that no matter what skin, hair and eye color is no one deserves to be labeled. No race should be discriminated and criticize. We should all get along and just be proud of where our roots come from. This film also intended for everyone who watch this film, is that there should not have to be obstacles to be proud of your own race.
In keeping with the idea that female characters play a supporting role in the story of a male protagonist, Homer makes a point to focus on Odysseus’ wife. Penelope is the model of
In The Odyssey it shows that all the women are uniquely different by their relationships, desire, and personality towards men. In addition, all the women help represent the typical role of a woman. Their role is very critical in the ongoing adventure in this epic poem. Homer represents women as strong roles and real life characters such as them being strong, tough, and diligent. In the story there are three major types of women, which are the goddess, the good hostess/wife, and seducers. With each one of these female characters they are a vital importance and add a different type of factor to the story. As Odysseus returns home to his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus from fighting in the Trojan War he is faced with many obstacles that he must get through to get home to
Even though the film was meant to funny, it did make me think about different cultural preduice and obstacles interacial relationships may face. Over all I enjoyed the film it poked fun at racial prejudice and brought some good topics to the table. However, I wish they would have take the opportunity to have gone deeper into racism and brought it out into the open for people to
The actions of the black characters support the cultural stereotypes that are pervasive throughout this film. A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (Iftkar, 2013). Blacks are
I think the underlying problem that is demonstrated in the film is the failure of people to look past the faultlines of color and culture. I think this is
The majority of the racism involved in the movie is towards the negro population. They are perceived as thugs, thieves and
Another issue in the movie was attitudes. All races have attitudes towards people that are not like their own, whether they are good or bad. Attitudes I believe are connected with experiences. What one experiences with another race can affect the way their attitude is towards them.
Throughout the epic poem “Odyssey” we see many great characters who all bring a different feel to the story. “Odyssey” is a story that has a male main character and many male side characters, but it also has several female characters found in it. Each one of these females have an important role within the story and it would not be the same without them. Athena, Penelope, and Eucycleia are a few examples of female characters.
The main problem that Todd faces is the struggle to maintain a sense of self-confidence as a result of living under his older brother’s shadow of success. Instead of becoming a lawyer like what his father expects, he has a passion for writing which contradicts with his father’s anticipation. However, unlike Neil, he keeps these thoughts and ideas to himself and dares not to speak them out loud to his parents. He remains obedient whether or not his opinions match theirs. There were various obstacles that prevented him from delivering his thoughts and he was often labeled as shy or timid. He was unable to present the well-prepared poem he wrote in front of the entire class due to these traits and the lack of self-confidence but Mr. Keating recognizes his strengths as well as his potential to do something marvelous. By using unusual techniques, Mr. Keating was able to bring out his potential and he receives one of the first applauses which was the beginning of his emerging confidence. It was evident that he debates against himself and requires a lot more courage to get up in front of everyone simply because he did not see the value in both himself and the work. The overall conflict is man vs. self and man vs. man. Most of the time he was bothered by himself for being pessimism and the fact that others have huge expectations on him due to his brother’s outstanding achievements.
The Odyssey shows women as comforting people. Women are usually the ones that are caring and gentle towards most things. In the book, that 's how women are portrayed as, but in the movie women are either in a state of depression or just eye candy for men. In the book, Penelope cares for Telemachus as a mother should. She tries to tell him about his father that he has never met and tries to tell Telemachus that his father loves him very much. Penelope always tries to hold down the kingdom while her husband is gone and tries her best for no chaos to break out. But in the movie, Penelope is showed as more depressed that her husband is not home and
