Bob-killed by johnny because he was killing ponyboy rich 1. soc Socs are the opposing character group in the book that the greasers dont like nor hangout with. Bob is a soc and he is kind of the leader/captain of the socs 2. mustang The mustang is a important car in the book for the fact that it is a symbol of fear and is a recurring object in the book that has more meaning behind it than you would think. The mustang also represents wealthiness and social/financial status. 3. corvette The corvette is one of the well known cars because Bob's girlfriend Cherry drives one and the corvette is a popular car brand in the outsiders and you are considered to be cool or tuff if you have a car like that. 4. madras Madras are the main basic …show more content…
Drive-in/ movie The drive-in is what I like to call a hangout place for both groups to pickup girls and have fun. This is a key place for Bob because this is the place that starts the not yet created feud between him and ponyboy. 7. money I can't emphasize this enough. Money is a huge part of the socs and Bob. Socs are known for their money and financial rank in the society. 8. Beer Socs drank a lot of alcohol, especially Bob. He was known for doing stupid things when drinking and has caused Cherry to not want to be near him because of it. 9. Soda(Pepsi/Coke) Sodas were especially favored by Greasers and Socs when not drinking alcohol. Soda was the common drink to get when you're parched. Bob drank soda as much as any of the rest of the characters in the book. 10. Beatles The Beatles were thought of as legends when it came to music that Socs liked. They thought the Beatles were the coolest band and thought that Elvis, the Greasers rock hero wasn't even close to being as cool. 11. 3 rings Bob wore three rings as a symbol of wealth and respect. He used the rings as an unfair advantage, almost as a way to cheat and seriously screw someone up in a fight with a Greaser that usually always ended in the Greaser side being terribly
Imagine a society in which the main law is the population law. In the novel “Among the Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the population law determines that a family may only consist of four people. But in the Garner’s house they didn’t play by the rules, instead they had a third child, Luke. He hides and lives in the attic. But when the “population police” arrive Luke hides in the basement.
When Bob and his gang , jump Ponyboy and Johnny in the park, Ponyboy says that all Socs are is white trash with mustangs and madras. This shows that first off, Pony does not even see Bob as a person but rather just a Soc . Finally, Bob's girlfriend Cherry, says that Socs do not show or say what they really feel, but rather tailor themselves to meet certian stereotypes. The death of Bob supports the idea that stereotyping leads to
“…and when she looked up, I was overcome with panic that she’d see me and call out my name…and my secret would be out” (3).
However, the Soc are looked as these rich, smart people. The Soc don’t act their own self they try to be someone who they aren’t. They make sure not to show their true self. “Soc were always behind a wall of aloofness” [Doc C]. The Soc act the same as the greasers, but they are rich.
He never really understood why Randy thought that “Bob was the best buddy a guy could ever have”, or why Cherry was fond of him. After much contemplation, he comes to a realization that yes, Bob was mean, and vain, but above all he was human. (Chapter 11) Ponyboy Curtis "Ponyboy, listen, don't get tough. You're not like the rest of us and don't try to be.
Greasers are the main stereotype in the book but also there is a small part played by the Socs. Although the book is about the life and times of a Greaser there is also a ‘Socs Story’ in there, as throughout the book you learn more and more about the Socs and how they live. But this all changes. When Bob dies Cherry and Randy, the main Socs characters, begin to see that there is no difference between Socs and Greasers. Randy, when he talks to Ponyboy in private doesn’t call

The amount of money someone has, the neighborhood someone lives in, and the school someone goes to does not determine their opinions, ideas, or dreams. Pony lives in a somewhat run-down neighborhood, and he, Darry, and Sodapop don’t have much, but they and their friends still try to be happy, and enjoy life when they can. Unlike the Socs, the Greasers are a family. If one of them gets shot at, four more of them jump out to protect them. “ “It’s not just money. Part of it is, but not all. You Greasers have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re sophisticated - cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us.” Cherry Valance is a Soc girl, but according to Pony, she isn’t exactly a Soc because she doesn’t chose to see sides like other Socs. She sees Socs as people who don’t feel. Life is good enough for them that things get repetitive and boring, which is probably part of why the Socs enjoy jumping Greasers. The Greasers, on the other hand, don’t have consistent lives. Only a few of them are in school, not all of them have jobs, and they’re always getting into just enough trouble to keep themselves alive, which is why they seem to have more emotions than the Socs. The two groups are so different, and, in retrospect, it’s all because of money. Money could solve almost all of the Greasers’ problems, like by earning them some respect, and it would mean they don’t have to work so hard to get by. When Cherry explains to Pony that Socs have troubles, just like the Greasers, he can’t imagine what kind of troubles they could possibly have, but he quickly learned. All Bob Sheldon wanted was for someone to tell him no, and when someone did it ended up costing him his life.
The Socs are a disgrace because they beat up greasers based off of their money issues and the side of a city they live on. If you are someone who is rich like a soc and is in a better environment and situation you are expected to be more respectful. Teens with a strong foundation are more responsible, and kids who have no parents or anyone that is a positive role model end up doing more of what they want. Kids that grow up on a wrong side of town tend to make the most crimes based off of how they were raised. As a Soc, they are being a disgrace by the way they act.
Bob contrasts with the gay characters. He represents a gender binary of masculinity. Bob is an open-minded mechanic that takes a liking to Bernadette. Bob travels with the three on their journey after Priscilla brakes down. He was married to a mail-order wife, a Filipino prostitute that left him during the movie stating that he wasn’t a good husband.
The Socs mostly came from houses with two parents, drive fine cars, wear fashionable clothing, and even given the freedom they wanted. Instead of focusing on all the goods that the Socs had, they decided to focus on their hatred towards the Greasers. They wanted to jump the Greasers and do whatever it took to cause conflict. “You Greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--- cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us” (Hinton 33). The Greasers feel emotions, but the Socs are too cool to feel anything. Instead of the Socs taking advantage of everything they had, the Socs got editorials in the newspaper for being a public disgrace one day and a benefit to society the next day. Randy and Cherry seem to be the only ones to realize the error of the Socs ways. Cherry feels sympathy for the Greasers even after her boyfriend, Bob, was killed.
Third of all, the Socs were the reason Johnny is dead. Because they drove Johnny and Ponyboy away, by forcing Johnny to kill Bob. “Five Socs were coming straight at us, and from the way they were staggering I figured they were reeling pickled. That scared me. A cool deadly bluff could some times shake them off, but not when they outnumber you 5 to 2 and were drunk. Johnny’s hand went in his back pocket and I remembered his switchblade.” (Pg 62// The Outsiders/ Hinton). This quote shows that if the Socs did not outnumber Johnny and Ponyboy, or even not go to the greaser’s territory, then Johnny never would have stabbed Bob. They never would have gone to Windrixeville. They never would have saved those children, therefore Johnny never dying. Do you think that the Socs are the reason for the rumble? Yes.
There were conflicts between the Socs that conflicted with the greasers. They were two opposite groups that didn't get along. The Socs, "the jet-set...West-side rich kids, wear madras shirts, smell of English leather, and drive new sports cars..." (6). Socs were rich, while greasers were low class. "Soc" is an abbreviation of the Socials, which are the West-side rich kids. Socs had a better reputation than the greasers.
The blue Mustang in the story is a symbol that represents the Socials. In the story the blue Mustang describes the dangerous to the greasers but lastly the blue Mustang loss it power because when one of the greaser that is Ponyboy sit inside the car
