Think about how much music has changed over times that you listened to when you were a child to what you own kids listen to now.

Ever since its birth as a country in 1776, the United States of America has been a country surrounded by a certain aura that is not shared by other countries throughout the world. The country is one that was born out of a struggle and revolution, which has helped shape the character of its citizens and its national identity. Throughout the various wars the country has fought, such as the war of 1812, both World Wars, and the Vietnam War, propaganda has played an important role in influencing the people of America. The government of the United States has effectively used propaganda over the centuries to generate funds for war or relief efforts, save resources for war efforts, to get out and work or to possibly sway the minds of its citizens towards particular political ideals. Propaganda throughout the history of the United States, and throughout the world, have had various themes such as slandering an enemy as seen in anti-German, Italian, and Japanese propaganda in World War 2, or the opposite when trying to gain support for an ally. The main purpose of propaganda throughout history has been to persuade people to buy into or follow a set of ideals set out by whoever created the propaganda. Propaganda has played a large part in shaping the understanding of the United States by causing its citizens to buy into the beliefs of the government, which is a large reason why the country was able to become the great nation that it is today.

For many people the soothing sounds that old school music has to offer and the message of the song is what makes it so great. To others, that type of music sounds so outdated that it just does not sound good anymore. A recent survey found that most people born in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s prefer old school music because

America has not always been easy going on minorities. Ever since colonizers settled America, Americans have been terrorizing others, starting with Native Americans. Even in present day America, African Americans, Asian Americans, women, LGBTQ members, and Native Americans, and Latinos are still forced to fight for their civil rights. Groups like “Blacks Lives Matter” and the Women’s March Movement prove that inequalities still exist in today’s society despite the fact minorities have been fighting for their rights for over 100 years. All groups fight for their equal rights was a struggle no matter how “hard” or “easy” it was.

To understand why music is a product of human intention and perception, we start by defining or understanding the nature of music. Music is defined as the sounds or combination of vocals and instruments in a way that it produces a form of beauty, expression, or harmony of emotions. Arguably, people compose or make music through many ways (Resnicow, Joel E., 20-29). Your observation of Matthew's response regarding the changes in a person's personal taste in music changing I believe are spot on. Although, I know my musical tastes don't match up with the examples mentioned by you both, I must admit I feel as though I'm going through the same issues. Does getting older change your taste in music? Do you stay stuck in the good old days only appreciating what was popular in your youth or is it the fact that you don't put forth the time and effort that you once did in order to appreciate and explore new music?

I believe that my purpose in life is to help those less fortunate than me. Everyone can compose good music if he has good creativity but everyone cannot become a great musician. Because for becoming a musician, the music that was born in your mind should take its shape with various instruments being played together. If you do not know how to play the instruments and bring all the tracks into sync you will definitely need a producer for your music. The producer may claim a royalty for your own creativity. You may face some copyright issues for the song.

Musical taste is subjective. Everyone has a different musical preference that depends on their age, where they live, where they are from, what mood they are in, and so on. For example, according to an interview with Freddy Matt who is a college student in New Jersey, “I listen to music, which is pop music, when I get bored, or when I want to be relaxed. Otherwise, usually I do not listen to music” (Matt). According to another interview with bar patron Tom Hunk, who is 35 years old, “I listen to music for fun. Friday and Saturday night, I do go to a bar in order to let myself go” (Hunk). These examples show that people listen to music with different purposes. On the other hand, people listen music when they do sports such as running, weight lifting, walking, playing tennis, etc. Even though they live in the same community, their perspective on music is different.

Most of the music influence I have was harvested back when I was eleven. I listened to a wide variety of genres of music from pop, to rock, to rap, to country, to concert band music, even to Bollywood music as that’s what would be playing in my home as my mom cooked food for all of us.

Music criticism is the “intellectual activity of formulating judgments on the value and degree of excellence of individual works of music, or whole groups or genres,” (Oxford Music Online). As with any subject, the critic is often lumped together with the elitist. They are very similar, but I believe that it is unfair for the critic to be labeled an elitist due to the negative connotation that comes along with elitism. Even the notion of “criticizing” something now makes people bat an eye. However, the idea of the critique does not. This is often associated with what is commonly referred to as “constructive criticism,” an idea that is widely accepted, and even encouraged, in most learning environments. A certain level of objectivity comes across here. I associate this with the generic critic. The elitist, on the other hand, is a critic who judges the elements of whatever is in question in relation to their own personal taste, or at least that’s my conclusion. Here, things are much murkier in terms of objectivity, and elitists appear condescending to others because they tend to boast their opinions as if they were absolute truths. I have come to understanding that we encounter many more opinions that truths in our lifetime, and it is often hard to distinguish between the two. The accepting of this idea is one of the things that can distinguish constructive criticism from condescending elitism.
