In society, people have been commonly seen jogging, in cafes using earphones while working, cleaning, showering, exercising, dancing among many other things while listening to music. Music can be calming. Music can be uplifting. Music is universal. Music is a commonly discussed topic. But it is mainly discussed whether or not it is appropriate to use in an educational environment. Music is seen as a distraction. Some see it as an efficient medium to appease the mind. It is theorized that music creates out of the box ideas to life and improve critical thinking. Albert Einstein once said, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” In a high school environment, music can innovate a great many things for students. Incorporating music in students lives can positively benefit those students.

Think about all the places one is exposed to music: radio, TV, elevator, stores, restaurants etc. Every culture and country has its own style of music and the importance of music is paramount to individuals in many ways. Music is so powerful it can create a visceral response by lowering the heart rate and decreasing stress levels (Wright, 2017). Evidence has also shown music to activate areas of the brain that are engaged during “Other euphoria inducing stimuli such as food, sex, and drugs of abuse” (Wright, 2017, p. 3). Personally, I feel that the novella “The Call of the Wild” was the most depressing book I have ever read. Quite frankly, maybe the most depressing book I will ever read. Chapter one was full of so much violence and hatred towards living beings. Abuse is a very touchy subject no matter whom the victim is. After the kidnapper choked Buck using the rope around his neck, it was very upsetting. I could picture Buck as this helpless dog. A living being that had never experienced this situation before.
Living in a world surrounded by noises and sounds, one cannot deny that music lives all around them. Schools, street corners, sporting events, there is one thing you will always find: music. Music education is quickly becoming defunct in schools, as many try to decry its many benefits. A growing emphasis on the concrete subjects of math and science, whose benefits are more immediate, are pushing the creativity and imagination of music classes to the back of the budget. Music education is no longer described as stimulating and exciting, but rather unnecessary and distracting. But the benefits of having an education in music is undeniable. Participating in musical education programs in schools can give students the opportunity to form lasting friendships and to gain skills that will last them their entire lives.
