The Possibility of Evil
Envy, greed and hate are all examples of evil in some people's definition; but, what is evil? Can we stop it, and, are we supposed to? Before we speak about the commitment of the normal person to stop evil, we have to understand what evil is. Evil is what a person accepts it as true; this can be shown in the story the possibility of evil. Ms. Strangeworth does not believe her letters create problems rather than solve them. And in someones elses view, she can be perceived as evil.
Before we go any further we need to talk about what evil really is. According to the official definition, evil is “profoundly immoral and malevolent.” But we also need to remember how should we judge someone's actions if they are evil. An example of this is when someone tells the absolute truth every time, someone could perceive that as evil act. An example of this in the story is when Ms. Strangeworth writes these rude letters to her fellow town members. Here is one of the letters she wrote “Didn’t you ever see an idiot child before? Some people just shouldn’t have children, should they?”(Jackson 5). Ms. Strangeworth never thought about the harm she was doing, and another thing is all of her letters were based off suspicion not facts.

Evil is judged on action and it is judged differently by other people. Society is the worst of all, everyone has their own opinions and everyone thinks that their opinion is the best but really the one of the worst types of evil is judgement, as the old saying goes don't judge a book by it's cover. In the story The Possibility of Evil by Shirley Jackson the main character miss Strangeworth shows her true backstabbing nature when writing anonymous letters to all the people in town. The story eventually reviles her dark secret of writing the letters and hiding behind the paper. Similarly cyber bullies hide behind a keyboard and type out horrible messages meant to make the receiver feel meaningless. The common pattern of indirect manipulation and controlling behaviors are observed in both modern cyber bullies and the character Miss Strangeworth in "The Possibility of Evil".

Miss Adela Strangeworth is a very peculiar woman. On the outside, she is simply the sweet old lady down the street, but get to know her and she is as cold as ice inside. Miss Strangeworth lives in a small town where everybody knows everybody and nobody knows nobody. The story, “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson does not give much as to where this little town is located but what we do know is it has a post office, a market, and the lovely Strangeworth house with roses out front.
