Sarah was a curious girl. She had just turned 13 this summer. School had started and it was moving painstakingly slowly. Sarah often got bored in their little town of Ashton in northern Maine. It was one of those towns that you would never find on a map, or in real life. It was hidden behind a forest of green pine trees, and they hardly ever had new residents. The only people who lived there had had generations of family before them. Sarah was a part of one of those families. She had only left Ashton one time in her whole life, to find her missing cat. She never found Jamie of course, but it felt amazing to just get away. By 12 years old Sarah felt so cooped up, that she was ready to run away, that was before he

The wind was strong. It pushed and pulled in every direction. You could practically feel it whooshing around you, trying to dig into every crack and crevice of bare skin, as if it was trying to freeze you on the spot. It was definitely a strange day to begin with. Someone should have expected it. No one did. He showed up while Sarah was in the middle of playing trucks with Jason, her little brother. Their parents burst into the door with worried looks on their faces. “Mama, Papa, what’s wrong?” Sarah asked. They quickly changed expressions. “Nothing honey, there is just a new man in town.” her mother said. Sarah was confused. “I didn’t know new people ever came here.” Her parents glanced at each other. “Well he’s not really new,” her father added. “I’ve never seen him before.” said Sarah. Her mother butted in. “It’s getting late, Sarah would you set the table? Jason go shower and change, make yourself look presentable.”
“But mother,”
“No Sarah, kitchen, now.” Sarah knew there was no negotiating. “Fine.” she growled.
The next day, Sarah saw him. A very tall slender man. He had eyes as green as grass and hair, black as night. What she was watching him do was even more exciting than her finally witnessing something, or someone, new. He was hammering in a sign. It had large black letters, it’s color a bit like his hair, that read LIBRARY. Sarah gasped with excitement. Suddenly, the man turned around. It was as if he could tell she was watching him. Something
The story of Sarah touched the lives of many characters in the book “Sarah’s Key” by Tatiana De Rosnay. Sarah had such a profound impact on every character in the book, whether it is the scarring and unforgettable memories they have of her or new information they have gathered from the past. Julia invested her entire life into finding out more about Sarah, her life, and what happened to her after a daring escape from a concentration camp. She sacrificed her marriage and many personal relationships because she cared so deeply and passionately about Sarah and what had happened to her. Julia blocked out all of the negative opinions and people telling her to stop and worked nonstop to learn the truth, to never close her eyes on the past. The brutal past of Sarah left a
Kristina the main character travels to her father that she hasn't seen for most of her life. Before Kristina was a golden child, she got good grade, she made good choices, and she never even thought of drugs. After the trip at her father's she was opened to the idea of drugs, boys and reckless decisions. She wasn't Kristina anymore, she was Bree. This book shows readers how easy it is to get lost into drugs and reckless choices; and the struggle of becoming herself again.
Innocence first proclaims itself when Sarah discovers that she is not returning home. Sarah’s behaviour and lack of understanding towards pressing information is a portrayal of how she has been raised to be quite naïve. These preceding traits are revealed when Sarah explains to her brother, “I’ll come back for you later. I promise.” (9). Here, Sarah proves her innocent nature as a result of being raised by her parents in an exceedingly structured way. Guilt emanates into Sarah’s moral conscience when her father confesses that “we are not going back. They won’t let us back.” (23). Furthermore, Sarah’s sheltered upbringing is proved to be true when she smiles at a boy during the roundup and he looks back at her like she’s crazy. She then thinks to herself, “Maybe [I] had got it all wrong. / … Maybe things were not going to
“When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy.” This beginning to the novel “Ellen Foster” by Kaye Gibbons, prepares readers to enter the world of one of the most influential and appealing young woman protagonists in modern fiction. Ellen Foster, the main character of the book by Gibbons, is, in my view, the most fascinating and remarkable character in the story. Readers are introduced to the narrator Ellen, a determined, yet mature and individualistic eleven-year-old, who lives in the South during the 1970s. She lives with an alcoholic father and a sick mother. Ellen must go through many hardships and face much trauma, when she foreshadows her mother’s death and the long journey in front of her by saying that a storm is coming- “I can smell the storm and see the air thick with the rain coming.” (p.7). Young Ellen must go through much more than the average child her age, but she knows that she will get her happy ending. After dealing with her abusive father and depressed mother, Ellen deserves to go to a happy family, one that will accept her with smiles on their faces and joy in their eyes. Even if it means jumping from foster home to foster home, from a cruel grandmother to a condescending aunt and cousin, Ellen will find the people that will love her, even if it means first having to go to those who don’t.
Suena was walking home and she felt like she was being followed, but she thought it was because of the horror movie she watched the night before. It was about a twenty minute walk for Surena to get home and she often enjoyed but that day she didn’t enjoy it. When she got home there was a note on her fridge from her mother saying she’ll be back in a couple of hours and that there was leftovers in the fridge. She still had that icky feeling that someone was watching her, she kept saying in her head that it was just the horror movie scaring her. Her dog Belle was eating the couch again, when her mom got home she’d be mad. Surena went up stairs to her bedroom and forgot to lock the door that day, when her mother warned her many times before to

As she rubbed her eyes in exhaustion she remembered the adventures of the day before. When she got home she passed out from the excitement and strain on her heart. She reached down to check her leg and sighed with relief to find a replacement was already attached. She looked over at her nightstand and noticed her spare glass waiting for her to put them on. As she got out of bed all she could think about was how rude she was to Sam. She walked into the kitchen to see her mother preparing breakfast. She looked around and did not see Sam. She didn’t know why she expected to see her but she was upset that he was not here. Her mom turned a saw her disappointment and said “He seem in quite a rush to leave he left his job to help you.” She was startled by her answer and rushed out the door ignoring the cries from her mother. She saw a man walking on the road looking forlorn. She called out, “Sam!” The man stopped and turned it was Sam he answered her, “Joy?” She ran into his arms and started to cry. Every person in life faces a number of obstacles that he/she either conquers or the obstacles conquer that person. In the two essays, “Learning to Read and Write” by Frederick Douglass and “The Library Card” by Richard Wright, the two authors face many obstacles in their lives. Frederick Douglass is a slave who has a desire to gain knowledge regardless of the obstacles. Richard Wright is an African American man who lives in the South during the Jim Crow Laws and also has a yearning to attain more information about the life he lives. A previous EOF student, Corey James’ reaction to the essays written by Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright is that Douglass suffered far worse difficulties than Wright did. On the contrary, there is evidence, which proves that the two men, Douglass and Wright suffered equal obstacles throughout their quest to gain knowledge. Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright were not able to practice their rights due to society’s restriction of knowledge to African Americans. The two men became ostracized and the gained knowledge left the two authors with awareness, which brought distress in their lives.
When I heard Jessica crying and saw the dog looking into my face I told him “Georgie go see why Jessica is crying”. Next thing I knew he went off running and she was quiet so I went to check on her and there they were in the bed sleeping, he comfort her. Even though a snow storm was coming, she decided to go on her winter camping trip anyway. It was like something was calling her out there. But in the event of her wilderness trip she was starting to feel better. There was a positivity her in her life that was growing and the depression had started to fade by the activities she is doing. Her experience of sleeping in below freezing caves, digging out of a snow barricades with the help of Jackson and Hailey. She was doing things her and her dogs would never have dreamed of. She admits that her very cold and freezing adventure has helped her appreciate the beauty of life and her winter wilderness experience. She was starting to feel like she belong and was appreciating the value of her life and her surroundings. “A Blizzard under blue sky” gave her a new lease on life and a spark of rejuvenation.
Ashton was visiting for a weekend, it was only him. Calum had to stay back and look for Michael, as he had ran off again. I hugged Ashton and looked at him. Ashton got in my car and smiled. I hugged him tightly. “It’s been too long!” I yell and he laugs. “I like the hair, you changed it up a bit since the last time I saw you.” He greeted me, I smiled and shook my hair. I had dyed it blonde and brown. I decided I need a change. “How’s Tate?” Ashton looked at me while I was driving. “He’s on edge because of the baby, but he’s good. Brooklyn?” I smiled and he chuckled. “She’s 4 months,” It was all he needed to say. “You guys are having another fucking baby! Oh my gosh!” I squealed as my car came to a stop. Ashton blushed and felt my stomach. I felt her kicking. “Do you know yet?” He asked and I
It’s been a long time since Margo, a sassy, overachiever, with a strong-willed character, last seen her, at one time, close friends. Pondering a road trip, Margo laid out a dusty map on a table top, popping bubbles with her sugar-free gum; she traced her freshly-black-painted fingernail across the Seattle area. She settled on Seashore, Washington. Not only did Margo want to take a vacation, but to mend her relationship with Sarah. Sarah, a bubbly yet fragile soul, was Margo's best friend until she made the worst mistake of her life and slept with her then boyfriend. Poor Sarah walked in mid-thrust. Sarah’s never forgiven Margo for the betrayal. Margo Harrison, 36, called Sarah for the first time in five years to make arrangements for the trip.
She had never been outside before, so she needed to know if going outside would actually end her life. Maddy lives out the eighteen years she couldn’t truly experience with Olly, who she had fallen in love with. Now that she had seen how wonderful life could be, she didn’t want to return to her normal life. Unfortunately, her heart went into shock and she was brought to the hospital. Her mother brought her home, and Maddy was constantly being watched to make sure she never tried to leave home again.
brightly that day, and her grey hair was full of sun flashes, and there was such a feeling that there was a nimbus around her head. I stopped and started looking at her. She was knitting and her fingers quickly did something with the stitches. There was nothing particular about her, but her outer look caught my eye and immediately attracted attention. Her skin resembled a baked apple. It was covered with wrinkles, but it did not distort her appearance. The most amazing thing were her eyes. Blue, round, energetic. There was such a feeling that these were the eyes of a kid, who wants to investigate the world. They eradiated kind miraculous light, and this light made me come closer and closer… For the first time during the fortnight, I approached the old woman because I wanted to do it, but not because I was obliged to so. It seemed that she was not surprised at all, she looked at me, as if I came every single
It was December of 1959, my mom and dad had died from a “fatal” car accident, or at least that’s what the detectives had said. I had been packing all my personal belongings for a week now, since I had no other family to live with except my Aunt, but she had made it clear that she didn’t want to take care of an extra child, since she already had five. Therefore I would be going to a boarding school for girls. I would only have to stay there for two years since I was sixteen and would be going off to college after I graduate. My aunt would be the one picking me up to take me. She made it crystal clear that she loved me very much and that as soon as Sammy, my cousin graduated, there would be an extra room and I could come live with her and the kids. After the long drive since the school was about three hours away and all she talked about was how sorry she was for me, I was glad I had arrived at this school. I was expecting it to be a nice, girly, bright school. But I didn’t see any of that. I saw a dark stone building with vines and overgrown grass covering the walls and sidewalks. My aunt gave me a sorrowful look and gave me a tight hug. I smiled, waved, and watched her drive away. Maybe it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I looked up and saw on the Stone that the word “Radley asylum” was engraved in. I looked at it strangely and wondered if I was at the wrong place. I continued to walk and before I could even knock, the door opened by itself. I had chills going down
