It was the first of June. The sun was shining brightly and there was the flavor of joy, happiness, and vacations in the air. I breathed it and truly felt how my body overwhelmed with the freedom and desire to move the mountains in the pursuit of great vacations. I planned my summer holidays during the whole year, and I knew for sure that it had to be a marvelous time spent with friends, ocean, sunshine, fresh fruits, and disco parties. My mother has changed everything that day. She decided that charity was the best thing, which I could do in summer, and enrolled me to the special program, aimed at attending the elderly homes and assisting senior people there. Saying that I was disappointed is nothing. I was truly furious, because it …show more content…
Nothing interesting. For me, they were outdated people, who knew nothing about life in a real world. But I smiled, made the things they asked me to, and counted minutes to return to my joyful life with cool friends, jokes, cafes and parties. One day and one meeting have changed my whole life. I was walking down the corridor, and accidentally glimpsed into the room, where sat old woman. She resembled an exotic fluffy flower. She had light curly hair and sat near the window. The sun was shining brightly that day, and her grey hair was full of sun flashes, and there was such a feeling that there was a nimbus around her head. I stopped and started looking at her. She was knitting and her fingers quickly did something with the stitches. There was nothing particular about her, but her outer look caught my eye and immediately attracted attention. Her skin resembled a baked apple. It was covered with wrinkles, but it did not distort her appearance. The most amazing thing were her eyes. Blue, round, energetic. There was such a feeling that these were the eyes of a kid, who wants to investigate the world. They eradiated kind miraculous light, and this light made me come closer and closer… For the first time during the fortnight, I approached the old woman because I wanted to do it, but not because I was obliged to so. It seemed that she was not surprised at all, she looked at me, as if I came every single
Have you ever been betrayed by someone that you trusted? “The Summer People”, a fairy tale short story written by the author Kelly Link, portrayed the characters in a way that be can be greatly related. Throughout the story, she used several literary elements, such as symbols, allusions, and dictions to help the readers to understand the moral of the story. The main character, Fran, was bonded with the faith to be the caretaker of the summer people, and there is no possible way that she can escape from them. Despite the kindness of her friend, Ophelia, Fran decided to use her to gain freedom from the summer people. Ophelia has always been truthful to Fran, even though Fran bullies her during the beginning of the story. At the end, Ophelia was betrayed by Fran and forced to take over her responsibilities of the summer people. In an e-mail interview conducted by Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts with Kelly Link by the editor, Brian Attebery, explained the style of her writing. Link stated, “The primary goals of fiction — whether it’s fantasy or realism or whatever — are to entertain, to raise or answer question, to unsettle or to comfort, to communicate. The tool set changes. The goal varies too, and that’s independent of genre” (qtd. In Attebery 414). The statement from Link gives the readers that why she decided to write stories like The Summer People, which can be greatly related to realism, because it’s important to understand thing aren’t always going to turn
In her mind’s eye, she now pictured him handsome with strong eyes that would one sunrise, take her away from the life she was destined to live. She knew she should go for help and then run to school to finish her final test to win the right to alter what she would some sunrise become. However, deep down, she could not make herself leave his side. This was her first opportunity to have a real friend, and she would not give this up for any prize on the Gods’
“Simple recipes” by Madeleine Thien, and “The Closing Down of Summer” by Allister MacLeod both focus on the struggles the characters undergo due to cultural gaps, or being away from home from work, creating the sense of isolation or alienation within their families. The impression of isolation found in the text is generated from the situational behaviours found in the actions, thoughts, or exchange of language in the characters. For Macleod focuses on how his protagonist uses ancestral rituals to find individual fulfillment on the account of his work occupation deteriorating his connection with family. Whereas Thiens story demonstrates how the uses of ritualistic behaviour has created a tension between the different social identities of oriental
The short sci-fi story All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about being treated as an outcast and reveals the alienating effects that it may have. Sometimes this treatment is brought on by others. In this case, Margot is treated in this harsh manner because she isn’t the same as her classmates and they desire to have the life experiences that she has. Being outcast may not be the only main theme for this story in each reader’s mind. All Summer in A Day provides a multitude of possible themes. This may be the case, however, the children’s physical and emotional abuse of Margot is extreme and justifies this theme. As the time draws nearer for the sun to rise, Margot’s classmates become more brash and crue and at that moment, Margot is exponentially different from the other children in hr class. This concept of being outcast and
One day, after school on May 31st, my mom and dad sat my sister and I down in the living room. At first I thought “ what's going on, who passed away, did something bad happened, what'd I do wrong” not until my Mom finally said, “Girls, we’re taking a trip to West Palm Beach Florida this week.”
500 days of summer is a story where a boy meets a girl, he falls in love with her yet she does not truly love him. The movie shows the progression of the relationship of Tom and Summer. It begins when they first meet when Summer begins working as a secretary where Tom works and progresses to them casually dating. Summer is obviously hesitant and against relationships yet Tom is overly eager to find the perfect girl. The story ultimately shows the demise and after effects of their relationship. At first thought anyone could think this is the typical love story where the movie casually progresses to them living happily ever after. This is not that kind of fairy tale love story.
Bullies can hurt someone with more than just there physical actions. Words can also be used by bullies to hurt someone. Every night for 7 nights the young man stalked the old man. He first opened the door, but the thing that was strange about him opening the door is it took him an hour every day. The young man shined the lantern on the old man when he was sleeping. The young man also stared at the old man’s eye, and he thought the eye was staring at him. He heard a groan coming from the old man. The young man saw something with perfect distinctness.
One night as I was traveling through Sleepy Hollow, I seen a beautiful woman who watched me ride by. I could not help but to keep her alive because the glow of beauty that her shiny brown hair and blue eyes gave off. I
It was a gorgeous summer day. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the world was at peace on the seemingly carefree sunday afternoon. church had just ended and the children ran fast and free ready to play. They ran two and twelve towards the town’s lake to go swimming, in order to ward off the heat of the noon sun. They stampeded through town bumping over numerous people and even one another to reach the cool blue waves. The menacing multitude took a sharp turn from the street to an old dusty road. The trees shook in the evening breeze and swayed slightly further when the children hurried by. Dust faintly clouded out the light that poured over the path. Finally they reached the dock and began to take off and swap clothes. The boys took off their shirts and pants and swam in their underwear, while the girls chose to go behind some nearby bushes.and exchange out their attire. When everyone was in they started to splash one another while laughing and shouting. A few of them dived under the water to search for fish and other sea life. When they came back, up two of them had seaweed, one held a starfish, and two others had a crab holding it by both sides. It was getting a little later in the day, but the kids were not quite yet ready to leave their fun to rest. They decided to play hide and seek even though the sun was beginning to make its descent behind the green curtains that were the distant hills. One child counted while everyone hid and waited. As he counted out
It took me eighteen years to spend some quality time with my mother and discover what an incredible journey she has had with my brothers and me. She is the kind of person who has always been very involved with all parts of our daily lives. In fact, she was the kind of mother who always had time for her three sons, worked full-time and had time to devote to community projects too. Her energy and enthusiasm for all of these things seemed endless and she always tried to teach the three of us to see the value in the idea of giving back to the community. I was always glad that she was present at my games and supported me through school, but it took me over a decade to learn what motivated her to be so

Two hours escaped without notice, however it felt like centuries for the girl. She never fell into sleep again. The first weak rays of light penetrate the dark sky signaling the approach of dawn. The sun had just broken the horizon and then peeked over. The dark sky was now tainted with a mixture of yellow and orange. As the sun gradually ascended, the room was lit up, bring a sense of life. Although, the girl was not in the sunshine, the warm light of nature's own coloring lit up her eyes and gave a bright flush to her cheeks, and deep red to her lips. The sunshine was a make-up artist who helped the girl look much
